UPDATE Armed Standoff at Pattaya Convenience Store as Chinese National Surrenders After Two-Hour Siege Picture courtesy of Daily News A dramatic late-night police operation in Pattaya ended with the arrest of a 35-year-old Chinese national who allegedly entered a convenience store brandishing a handgun, sparking panic among locals and tourists. Police have now confirmed that the man was Chinese and not Korean as first reported. The incident occurred at a store near the entrance of Soi Thepprasit 8. Police said they were alerted to the situation shortly after midnight and quickly mobilised a large team, including plainclothes officers and members of Pattaya’s tourist police. Upon arrival, officers found the store surrounded by market vendors and bystanders. Police immediately cleared the area, evacuating people from the danger zone before sealing off the front and rear exits. For more than two hours, officers attempted to negotiate with the armed man. A Chinese interpreter was eventually brought in, persuading the suspect, later identified as Mr Zhang Shuai, to surrender peacefully. He emerged from the back of the store with his hands raised before being taken into custody. Police recovered a modified Glock 19 replica capable of firing .380 calibre rounds. Store employees told officers that Zhang had rushed inside claiming he was being pursued by another Chinese national. Witnesses said another man did follow him into the shop briefly before leaving, after which Zhang appeared to be hiding at the rear of the premises. Staff noticed he was armed, prompting them to flee and call police. Zhang was taken to Pattaya police station for questioning as officers investigate his claims and determine whether the incident was linked to a personal dispute or other criminal activity.
