Lost/Stolen British Passport In Thailand

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have recently submitted a post, with a "what if" scenario about having an emergency in Thailand. I came across information that should be taken into account if you are travelling on a British Passport to/from and around Thailand.

I have been shocked with these finding, here are the facts.

(The Problem).

YOU HAVE LOST YOUR BRITISH PASSPORT OR YOUR BRITISH PASSPORT HAS BEEN STOLEN.

(The Facts)

1. We (British Embassy) no longer issue passports in Thailand. All British passports are now processed by our Regional Passport Processing Centre in Hong Kong. (Yes Hong Kong).

2. Where to send

British Consulate-General

RPPC - 5th Floor

1 Supreme Court Road

Hong Kong

(Please note that Hong Kong addresses do not have post-codes).

How to send

We recommend that you send us your application by secure means such as by registered post or by courier. The British Embassy in Bangkok has negotiated a preferential one-way rate with DHL for sending passport applications and associated documentation from Thailand to Hong Kong. This preferential rate is currently available at all DHL office in Thailand. For security reasons, please make sure that you do not highlight on the outside of the envelope that it contains a passport application.

3. How much

Passport fees are:

Adult passport

  • 32-page passport - £128.00 (6,235.18 THB) correct as of Jan 12 2012
  • 48-page passport - £154.50 (7,526.48 THB) correct as of Jan 12 2012

Child passport

  • Child passport (32 pages) - £81.50 (3,969.91 THB) correct as of Jan 12 2012

Courier fee - Each customer will be required to pay a courier fee to cover the cost of the return of supporting documents from Hong Kong and for the delivery of the new passport from the UK.

  • Courier fee - £19.86 (967.391 THB) correct as of Jan 12 2012

4.

How to pay

You will need to pay the exact fee (passport fee(s) plus courier fee) either by credit card using the credit card form, or by International Banker's Draft, payable in Hong Kong Dollars (HK$) to "British Consulate-General Hong Kong". We only accept debit cards which have either the Mastercard or Visa symbol, as usually these can be processed as payment by credit card. No other debit cards are accepted. Please note that if paying by credit card, the payment will be taken in Hong Kong dollars at the prevailing rate when your application is received. Your credit card company may charge an additional fee for this. We do not accept payment by personal cheque.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH

5. Timing

We aim to process the new passport within four weeks from the date the fee is taken and the application contains all of the information we need. Failure to provide all of the required documentation will result in your application being delayed or returned.

If it is a first time application (this includes children who have not had their own British passport before, customers who are changing their name other than by marriage, or replacing an old blue passport), or you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, you should allow at least six weeks.

6. We would remind customers that travel should not be booked until a passport has been issued and received by you. We cannot accept responsibility for any costs incurred if travel is booked and subsequently cancelled before you have received your passport.

7. Delivery back to you

Your passport will be dispatched to you from the UK. Where appropriate, your supporting documents will be sent back to you from the Passport Processing Centre. Both shipments are handled by DHL Worldwide.

DHL advise that delivery of supporting documentation should take one to two working days from dispatch from the Consulate-General in Hong Kong. Delivery of your passport will take up to two working days from UK dispatch.

8.

Specific requirements from Thailand

ORIGINAL PASSPORT: Thailand is an exception to the main guidance given on our primary website. It is not advised to be without your original passport in Thailand and we recognise this. You may therefore submit a clear photocopy of your passport (just the page with your personal details and photograph). Please note that the passport being renewed will be electronically cancelled and is therefore not valid for use as a travel document from the moment you submit your application. On receipt of your new passport, you must physically cancel your old passport by cutting the corners of the photo page and the front and back covers. Failure to do so may leave your replaced passport open to abuse. Alternatively, you should visit the British Embassy in Bangkok to have your replaced passport physically cancelled.

9. Urgent Travel:

If you need to travel urgently and your normal passport is not available you should contact the British Embassy in Bangkok. They may be able to provide you with emergency travel documentation. Please note they will not be able to answer general passport questions or give information on passport applications in progress (as they are no longer involved in this process). You should only contact them if you have a need to travel urgently and you will be asked to supply evidence of your need.

10. Contact Us:

If you cannot find the information you need on the website, you could contact the Careline Passport Information Line at +44 208 082 4744 (Credit Card Line - calls will be charged at £0.72 per minute plus VAT) 19:00 Sunday UK time - 01:30 Saturday UK time (24 hour service). Please be aware that you will be charged for this call.

For customers with hearing difficulties, a Text phone service is available by contacting +44 1750 725368.

Please do not contact us before the expected delivery time as detailed above. We will not be able to give further information and you will be charged for this call.

With effect from 18 August 2011

All information in the post has come from the (UK) Foreign and Commonwealth Office)

Also you have forgotten you are required to report the loss to the Police first.

You can also be interviewed by the Embassy to ascertain how and where you lost it, but you can get an emergency passport that allows you to travel home.

The fact that normal passports, not emergency ones, are applied for in HKG is a well known fact nothing new there, the passport is actually sent from IPS in the UK to your address in Thailand.

I was unaware of this "well known fact". I was also unaware that an Emergency Passport can be issued to get you home. Do you have an official link to info so we can post it on here to help people, who are clearly not as informed as yourself.

What you should have pasted and copied was this:

Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

To obtain an Emergency Travel Document (ETD), the applicant must apply in person. They will need to establish if the country they are planning to travel to accepts ETDs. To do this, they will need to contact that country's embassy.

An ETD is valid for only one return journey out of Thailand which can be to a maximum of five destinations. A person may only be issued with 2 ETDs within a 12 month period.

Please bring the following:

  • completed application form
  • recently taken passport sized photograph
  • proof of your confirmed travel plans (e.g. travel itinerary, hotel booking etc.)
  • If you are resident in Thailand, proof that your passport is unavailable (If lost/stolen; a police report).
  • copy of passport data page
  • payment

When you have the requirements listed above, please come to the Consular Section of the British Embassy and explain that you need to travel urgently.
