Justice Min Outlines Framework for Providing Relief for Southern Insurgency Victims

The Justice Minister visited the deep south to attend a meeting of the committee providing relief for victims of the southern insurgency.

He insists the authorities will provide timely aid to affected people under the same framework used for victims of political protests.

Justice Minister Pracha Promnok took part in a meeting of the Committee for the Relief of Victims of Southern Insurgency at the Southern Border Province Administrative Center, or SBPAC, in Yala Province.

It was his second attendance.

The meeting discussed a regulatory framework and rules to expedite the relief process, as the Prime Minister insisted that aid must be administered to all victims of the southern insurgency as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, SBPAC Secretary-General Police Colonel Tawee Yodsong said assistance has to be in compliance with religious principles.

Tawee said following discussions with Islamic committees in five southern provinces, they suggested that the government take into consideration the Muslim family and inheritance cases, as well as promote use of Malay language in the five provinces.

He said the SBPAC put a premium on providing relief to those in need and ensuring that all groups are accounted for, especially teenagers and orphans who will have to be provided with education and job training based on religious principles.

Education Minister: No Talk on Cabinet Reshuffle Yet

The Education Minister reiterated that there have been no closed-door discussions with the prime minister regarding the Cabinet reshuffle.

Education Minister Worawat Auapinyakul insists he did not discuss the Cabinet reshuffle with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra while traveling in the same van with her yesterday.

He added that it's the prime minister who has the authority to decide the appropriate time for a Cabinet reshuffle, and he is prepared to work as he is assigned.

Additionally, he reiterated there are no internal rifts within the Cabinet.

Worawat declined to comment on whether Industry Minister Wannarat Channukul will resign from his post, saying that it is a matter of the Puea Paendin Party.

Meanwhile, the Industry Ministry clarified that Wannarat will work at the ministry today as usual.

In addition, he has booked a ticket to Chiang Mai to participate in the mobile Cabinet meeting.

Songkhla under water for the second time

30173674-01_big.jpg

Up to a hundred households along a canal in Songkhla's Hat Yai district have been inundated by a second round of flooding this year.

The U-tapao canal overflowed its banks, inundating communities along the canal, and flooding blocked a shortcut roadway linking two districts.

However, the flash flood which hit many communities in the outer areas of Hat Yai district has receded. Flooding on Kanchanawanit Road, connecting Hat Yai and Sadao districts has fallen as the water quickly flowed into the U-tapao canal.

The local weather service in Songkhla warned of heavy rain and flash floods in the lower south today through Sunday in Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Satun and from Saturday through Monday in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Chumphon and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The meteorological department also forecast high waves in the Gulf of Thailand and small boats were advised to stay ashore.
