Two Thai children to join children’s rights meeting in Geneva

BANGKOK, 18 January 2012 (NNT) - By the end of this January, there will be the 59th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Two Thai child representatives have a chance to participate in this meeting as well.

Mr. Tomoo Hozumi, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)’s representative for Thailand, will report to the meeting the progress on children’s right development in Thailand in compliance with the Convention on the Rights of Child. UNICEF has supported the two Thais from Ayutthaya and Narathiwat provinces to join the meeting. Their participation is also aimed for promoting Thai children’s participation in the international arena.

One of the children said that he would tell the meeting about his real-life experience in the three southernmost provinces of Thailand. Living there is not as scary as it seems as reported in the media. Children of different faiths and himself can live together in the same community happily and peacefully.

Mr. Hozumi said that UNICEF was urging parents to take greater care of their children. Although Thai children have developed in several ways over recent decades, there are still large numbers of poor and underprivileged children who lack educational opportunities. Everyone should respect children’s rights and provide improved protection for children threatened by poverty, violence, negligence, abuse and exploitation.

The UNICEF representative for Thailand added that children had the same human rights as adults, but they should also have particular rights that serve their special need for protection.
