I came across these articles recently - how authentic the content is, I do not know. A Google for "Coconut Oil and Alzheimer’s Disease" would return plenty of positive sounding hits.

"Dr. Newport learned that the ingredient in the drug trial which was showing so much promise was simply MCT oil derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil, and that a dose of 20 grams (about 20 ml or 4 teaspoons) was used to produce these results. When MCT oil is metabolized, the ketones which the body creates may, according to the latest research, not only protect against the incidence of Alzheimer’s, but may actually reverse it."

Could anyone throw more light on this subject, please?

Hi

A while back i got onto coconut oil, and the link i'll put in below was pretty illuminating to say the least! Well, i'm putting in a link to people's success stories, but reading the whole site is interesting, not the least because saturated fats are supposed to be bad for you, so they've always said.

Anyway, more recently i've done more research on fats and so on, and am now confident enough to have made coconut oil a daily intake for me, purely as part of a good health regimen.

Interestingly the most recent story is on alzheimers!

When one reads so many success stories, and for so many medical problems, it becomes clear that coconut oil is something that helps the immune system in general. It would seem it's a really good food to be taking. I now eat loads of coconuts and drink the juice too.

Hope you have some success!

Impaired brain metabolism of glucose is one of the pathological mechanisms in Alzheimer's Disease (but by no means the only one), and it has been known for several years now ketone bodies -- either consumed or produced within the body -- can helpwith this. http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/18625458

The drug Axona is based on this fact, and has been proven to improve cognitive function in people with Alzheumer's. (Note that this is not the same as "curing" Alzheimer's).

There have been no controlled studies of the use of coconut oil, but it also contains ketone bodies so it is plausible that, if sufficient quantities were ingested, it would have a similar effect.

The ingestion of substances high in ketone bodies -- whether it is the prescription drug Axona, or large quantities of coconut oil -- is not without side effects. the most common is diarrhea which can be severe enough to prompt discontinuation. Less common but quite serious is impaired kidney function.

This article discusses the pros and cons of ketogenic therapy using Axona, coconut oil or MCT oil:

By the way, ketogenic diets have been advocated by some as a treatment for autism, and they are also used to reduce seizures in children who cannot achieve adequate control through normal medications. It is a very hard diet to adhere to and can create nutritional deficiencies over the long term. One wonders whether the use of "nutriceuticals" like Axona will prove beneficial in those conditions.

I was just at the Makro grocery store in Phuket and couldn't find coconut oil. Do you have to go to a health supplement store to find it? Is it priced similarly to the common cooking oils or is it more expensive?

You can find it at SuperCheap. It not dirt cheap, but it's not overly expensive either... sorry, can't remember exactly what I paid, but I didn't have sticker shock. The stuff I bought was 100% cold pressed. The company that makes it is http://parisut.com

Yes, if you're going to get some, don't skimp on the price. Mine is cold-pressed virgin organic coconut oil, you really need the label to have all of those. Although i'd guess that all coconut oil comes from normally grown coconuts without being 'farmed' with chemicals.

My brand i get is paradise and there's loads of it for sale up here in chiang mai, but then we're a healthy town! It's nearly 500 baht for a 700ml bottle.

It's great for cooking too.

So how do you consume it? On a salad? On some toast? It would probably be good in a Banana smoothy

There was plenty for sale in the stall at the bottom of the new escalator in the bottom car park at Central Festival.

Yes, very good in smoothies! I put a dessert spoonful in. At the moment in chiang mai it's too cold for the oil so it's in its hard form, making it easy to just take a spoonful and eat it straight. Quite a nice taste really. You could also throw it in a muesli mix. While it's hard i can also spread it on toast instead of butter, and then put honey on. Very nice!

Because it's not a nasty taste, there are many ways to take it really.
