Thai Govt: Bt10m Flood Bash Is To Say Thanks, Mend Fences

FYI, the expenditure on food and decorations was approx. 3.5million baht.

Which is still a large some of money that could be put to better use elsewhere or don't you think that?

Flood Defence Research Fund being one obvious alternative !

(Smartening up Pattaya Beach Road is a poor second choice but beats the party hands down)

Pattaya collects enough taxes locally to maintain its beaches and roads. Ask the local Pattaya government where the money goes.

Well, it certainly doesn't go to maintaining the beaches and the roads, so why do you persist on defending these people?

Local governments are responsible for the maintenance of local infrastructure.

I would say that the way Pattaya is growing they probably donot have the money for beach road or the beach but spend it on new roads and infastructure GK did you get an invite to the party since you rub sholders with the hi-so set.

FYI, the expenditure on food and decorations was approx. 3.5million baht.

And the overall cost including light and entertainment was 10m

You would think the lights would be in place already being a big venue and i'm sure this places has a lot of weddings and functions on .. End of the day the way i look at it they didn't use there own money but most likely the countries who donated money .. Still a waste of money at the end of the day they could have just sent fruit basket's and a thank you card ..

Here something i just found now The business community has offered assistance to the tune of $25 million (as of Nov. 2). there is a whole list of business and today exchange rate is

25,000,000.00USD

= 771,750,020.98THB

What a waste of (my) tax payer money.

10 million Baht will make a big different if given to a flood struck family.

Or many.

50,000 baht each to 200 with destroyed homes would go a long way.

or 10,000 bant to 1,000 homes needing repairs from floods.

This pat themselves on the back party is an absurdity.

Those who don't pay Income-Tax surely pay VAT, or Excise-Duty, or 'voluntary contributions' to village-funds or local-police, thus anyone who visits or lives here is a 'tax payer' in one way or another. cool.png

Given the level of VIPs attending, 10m B for 500 people, 20,000B/VIP = less than 500€ / person. For anyone who ever tried to organize such an event, they would know that is not extravagant.

The USA alone gave over $1,000,000 to flood relief last year.

Thailand is saying "thank you". It is polite. It is the right thing to do.

I eschew the use of words like "VIP". Especially if connected to emterpriseslike FROC, who were criminally negligent and incompetent. I do not disagree that there should have been some kind of celebration and that the heroes of that disaster should have been recognized and awarded commendations. What any of that might have to do with "FROC" I just can't imagine. They served as an an example of incompetence and corruption. Bah! I say.

Shouldn't they say 'thank you' to the right people?

So why didn't they invite any Democrats if one of the motives is to mend fences?

Surely not! huh.png Are you sure about that? Perhaps they were invited and declined since they disagreed with its appropriateness.

10,000,000/5,000 = 2,000 families left waiting. I guess someone did the math.

Yep........Us included.... Or is it excluded? Hard to tell the difference.....

As Rick Nelson said in the aptly named song "You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself."

Actually a chance for the PM to do what she does best - latest fashion, big smiles, mindless chatter, free scoff and booze.

Local governments are IRresponsible...

You are a bit of a one-trick pony on this maintenance issue. Surely the whole point of the comments here are that it is waste of money to have a bloody street party when there are inumerous other projects that the money could be spent on.

It would be the right thing to do if they were saying thank you to the people who tried to help out in those times or to those who suffered under their ineptitude for a few months.

But they aren't are they?

Do you really think the party cost 10 million?

Have you forgotten the kick back, when doing business with government agencies in Thailand, which is 20-25%.

Now this was a party which means higher kickback.

I haven't seen any information on how the party went. It did take place, didn't it ?

We weren't party to the party's party.

I hope you don't mind when I make a minor correction to this? It was the government's party, not the party's party.

It did take place. At the time I posted the question I had missed a new topic:

I'm not sure which saddens me more - your correction of my administrative faux-pas or your destruction of my cunningly conceived alliterative lexical flourish.

If only I'd know how much distress I might have caused you by my simple remark, I wouldn't have, I'd rather have my tongue beaten wafer-thin by a steak tenderizer and then stapled to the floor with a croquet hoop sorry.gif

(add: to console you a wee bit, some posters here will agree with you it was a party's party smile.png )
