Job-approval boost for PM

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's job-approval rating has risen since January, according to an Abac poll survey released yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- Yingluck's popularity, which plunged to 35 per cent in January, rose to 42 per cent in the latest survey conducted from February 15-18 with 2,585 respondents in 17 provinces including Bangkok.

The survey showed that the number of respondents who were non-partisan dropped from 51 in the previous survey to 43 per cent.

Yingluck enjoyed more popularity among men than women, with 45 per cent of men supporting her against 39 per cent of women.

Out of ten points, respondents gave Yingluck 5.3 on their confidence in her ability to solve flood problems, while she received a 7.3 rating over her inspection of provinces to prevent flooding.

Of the respondents, 77 per cent wanted to see the premier go shopping at a fresh market to gain understanding of the problem of price increases; 65 per cent were concerned about terrorism reports in Thailand; and the ratio of people who believe information received from the US increased from 56 to 65 per cent.

Criticism of Yingluck over the Four Seasons Hotel meeting allegation did not have any adverse effect on her job-approval rating. Yingluck's inspection tours of provinces as part of flood-prevention efforts lifted her popularity.

In response to the Valentine's Day explosions, asked which politicians they believe would be able to solve terrorism problems in Thailand, 64 per cent of respondents backed Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, followed by Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha (21 per cent) and Air Chief Marshall Sukumpol Suwanathat (12 per cent).

However, according to a Dusit Poll, confidence in the government's ability to keep the public safe has dwindled.

Of respondents, 85 per cent were more interested in following up on reports of the explosions than in reports of the PM's inspection tours or the Four Seasons

controversy.

Some 60 per cent said the explosions showed the government's inefficiency and lax measures to prevent terrorism; 46 per cent said they were worried about their own safety; and 36 per cent said the incident adversely affected the country's image, economy and tourism.

This may hint at where men's brains are kept. biggrin.png

Yes...The two parts of man's anatomy that use the most blood are their brains and their dumb stick. Unfortunately there is never enough blood in the body for both to function at the same time. When blood flows to one part, the other is left with nothing. However, this is also a built in excuse..."I did what last night? I don't remember a thing."

"77 per cent wanted to see the premier go shopping at a fresh market"

If this was one of the questions that contributed to the percentage score ... no wonder it has gone UP....Doh.

And how many percent want to see her in the 4 star hotel webcams?

I think this is a lukewarm endorsement of Ms. Y. by those forced to it.

Sort of back-handed compliments burried in a generally negative tone.

Obviously forced upon these oppositional researchers, in keeping with reality.

As most of these Polls, they are a vehicle for the Opposition to project their agenda through other people, thereby implying their perspectives are shared with the public at large.

A form of 'agenda laundering'.

Sorry ... who's doing the "agenda laundering"?

Have all these polls always been done by "the Opposition"?

Didn't Samak used to do this, cost him his premiership?

Form before function, style before accomplishment.

But even with those pathetic criteria these are not good numbers,

just higher that they pathetic ones they displace, for the moment.

The best they can do is lukewarm. Oh boy!

Tepid as opposed to the momentarily less negative blip this represents.

As I said, agenda laundering by the Opposition.

This Opposition utilze a number of non-Parliamentary Oppositional strategies, some of which are:

  1. Having their sympathisers conduct Polls such as this, which magically support their agenda's. This is misleadingly trying to create the impression that the Public at large supports their agenda, hence agenda laundering. They will throw in the odd kudo for Ms. Y. and company, but that is just so much folderol.
  2. Create groups, or what they often call networks, many times comprised of the same people, Generating a number of them and sending them to protest wherever they can, implies growing dissafection with Ms. Y. The one that really took the cake recently, was a group calling themselves a Network of dog lovers. Next thing we know, they will create one to support motherhood.
  3. The old saw of running to the judges, attempting to trigger some of the coup bomblets they built into their coup constitution.

There are probably more, but that is all that come to mind at the moment.

I will await the TVF contingent to try and turn this poll result into something as negative as possible.

Won't be hard.

Credible ones may be a tad more difficult.

They cannot make them more negative for heaven's sake.

They have to maintain some form of credibility in the face of reality.

If one conducted a survey of this nature to include the electoral majority that elected Ms. Y, it would be entirely different, but would be a disservice to their agenda.

Next they'll be coming up with a name like "Udon Loving Club"... oops, that's already taken. I didn't realise they were linked to "the Opposition".

What's this "electoral majority" you keep going on about?

In my experience, though young Thais (many, but far from all) are modernised, and exposed to Armani and Gucci, and listen to Bieber (eww), this is where their knowledge and understanding of how the outside world perceives things ends.

Some Thais actually do believe that Thailand is the only place that Thais can succeed, and where they can be the most successful. This kind of attitude contributes (IMO) to these two particular answers and corresponding scores:

36 per cent said the incident adversely affected the country's image, economy and tourism. - With economic growth slowing to 0.1% in 2011, images being broadcast on CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC and most other global news organisations of bombings in the streets of Bangkok (and corresponding mentions of the southern insurgency), and tourism numbers dropping (even though TAT will never acknowledge this - a better indication would be to look at the profitability of Thai Airways and vacancy rates on all routes throughout the year), Thailand definitely has issues which only 36% of Thais care about.. perhaps it has been too long since the Asian Financial Crisis, and western comforts have made them too carefree?

the ratio of people who believe information received from the US increased from 56 to 65 per cent. - If anything, I would say that the US has decreased communications with the Thai Govt, they made the announcement via the embassy, without consulting the Thai Govt, or have the public already forgotten this?

she received a 7.3 rating over her inspection of provinces to prevent flooding. - Absolutely shocking, I saw her on being chauffeured around Pathum Thani surrounded by bodyguards, doing little more than wave from her dry dump truck waving the "queens salute" to locals who stood on the side of the road soaked in water, fighting for their lives. Absolutely no physical interaction, and no physical effort to assist these people. In times like this, strong leaders lead from the front and let those who are qualified suggest the best decisions to stop the disaster.

I traveled through the area at the same time, and saw entire families with babies and young children sleeping under bridges, and in old incomplete buildings. I doubt these people gave her a 7.3 or anything even close. Some of these places are still suffering - her ability to prevent flooding? The government failed miserably and still has yet to correct or make up for their failures.

A 7% increase during some difficult times. The PM must be doing something right from the perspective of the Thai national population. Apparently, the angry 45 year old+ white male demographic of TVF doesn't have much influence on them.

The result is somewhat amusing as TVF's contingent of PM detractors scramble to come up with explanations. In the meantime, Mr. Abhisit and his Democrats continue to bottom surf. Here's a suggestion for the Democrats: Change your tactics and strategy. Adopt a constructive and positive approach and the public might perceive you as a viable alternative.

Your suggestion would be a refreshing change from the current political situation.

Maybe you missed some recent development, dear GK. Since begin of this year only people down South suffer from flooding. Bangkok and around are 'dryish'. Furthermore a barely finished goodwill tour with lots of nice pictures of a smiling lady do wonders to a simultaneously conducted poll.

In the mean time k. Abhisit, try to desists calls for populistic behaveour, stay with your current approach even if i doesn't give you the number of votes you might need. Integrity may not count for lots of politicians, but please stick to it.

IMHO, as relaxed, smiling, 45 year old+ white male residing in Bangkok in an area which wasn't flooded last year smile.png

Not sure why so many refer to her as fine. She looks like a 44 year old mom to me. What is hot a out that?

Ask this guy...

How can a boxhead have a sister that smokin hot?

or this guy...

Personally I think this is a good thing for Thailand in a purely superficial way.

The biggest asset is going to be Yingluck herself.

she is hot.

or this guy...

I'm no red supporter, but I vote for Yingluck. She's hot. That's all this country needs -- a good image.
