If you look closely they aren't kippers in a tin they are "smoked kippers" in a tin with no reference to Oak. Maybe it's like "twice cooked pork', a "twice smoked kipper" so it's a "smoked kipper"! A smoked herring which is a kipper that's been smoked again so it's a smoked kipper! Just remember that this all started because you wanted to learn to cook American style food!

So you're off tomorrow on BA for a month. We can continue this, OR NOT, when you return.

Have a safe trip and don't get lost trick or treating on Halloween!

If you Google Kippers and look at any site Wikipedia for example not once does it mention Smoked kippers, all it says is kippers are Smoked/pickled herrings I suppose pickled because they sometimes have been put in brine prior to being cold smoked. But a true Manx kipper would not have brined.

I would never want to cook Colonist style to many things covered in some sort of sweet Barbie sauce and I wont even go down the Mc Cheese route/rout'AM'.

Yes BA not looking forward to it I shall give a full update on so called British Airways when I arrive back in Blighty. Having learnt my lesson I shall be having a very large breakfast before I board.

Am flying back with EVA now they are a different kettle of fish that's fish not Smoked Kippers.

Orf now to watch West Ham get slaughtered on CTH.

If you look you might be able to see H/M as I venture down the N/S Bypass some time around 12 midday if your all lucky I shall be giving the royal wave.

That's another thing us Brits don't do that's trick or treat it's I believe an Colonist thing.

So so now you're off to watch another cooking show! Pork being cured and smoked in the west! Isn't that what West Ham stands for?

I see that they did win 2-1 against the Queen's Park Rangers! The name says it all!

Have a nice trip

They West Ham for all's information won 2/0.

Right H/M trip.

Arrived in BKK just before 3pm the evening was quite eventful, but that's another story.

As luck would have it had some time on Tuesday afternoon so had a look at the TV, and what was on the sports channel well colonist football. After viewing it for about 20 minutes H/M I think has got the gist of it.

What happens is there are two teams consisting of I believe several thousand very fat players. Some line up in the middle of the pitch, one then throws the ball between his legs and another catches it and then throws it for yet another player to catch if he gets it or not it doesn't seem to matter as it's time for a 20 minute time out.

That's when all the tired out Na nackered player change places, that's after they have all given High 5. I'm not to sure how they score but it might be that every time they call a time out or the commentator calls out 4 down and 30 or some such thing they get 3 or more points, or it could be if one of their shinny hat's get a mark on it. Anyway it's very exciting!!!

My trip on BA was the usual rubbish, yet again by the time they got to H/M they had run out of food choices. Got in 30 Min: late but at least the cab was waiting.

Last night even with the aid of track suit bottoms, socks, tee shirt, 'I kid you not' I still froze to death.

As you can see am up and running have done some shopping all I might add in ski gear and driving rain. Haven't managed to get any Kippers yet but tomorrow is another day.

Tomorrow night is having a drink with some chums might even be able to get some jellied eels at a local stall only hope they don't come with any of Dave's noodles.

Sorry, yes 2-1. My memory is getting so bad I forgot what the score was from the time I Googled it until I posted!

As far a American football is concerned I agree that the televised games have more commercial time than actual play time. The replays are actually better as they edit out most of the commercials. You must have been really bored to watch it. I'd really have to be on the edge to even think about turning on a cricket match.

BA once upgraded me and the other three in business to first. When it came to meal time my first two choices were not available because I was an upgrade. I got up, got my bags and moved back to my assigned seat in business class and asked what was available there since it was empty. I was asked to move back to first class and got the lamb that I had initially ordered served (thrown) to me with a disgusting look from the attendant since it was most likely her meal!

It's been cool here at night also. Had to turn the fan down to medium last night. Watch out for the jellied eels, they might be khaeng if it's that cold!

Glad you arrived safely and bet that you are already counting the days until your EVA flight!

Thank you for your kind words regarding me getting here. But I'm still freezing. Today out in Mums Limo well small Peugeot heater on full blast and I was still feeling the chill.

Re the Colonist football I was watching the Nascar sprint, just a little confused at that as the SPRINT seemed to be 400 laps of the circuit some 500 miles sprint indeed. Fell asleep and when I awoke there it was in all it's glory US football.

Right the reason for this post today H/M managed to obtain some Manx kippers two pares that's 4 of same have just consumed a pare 'without Noodles Dave' and they were delish, the other pare are now in the freezer for a latter date.

I forgot to mention my arrival in London terminal 5 as we were waiting for our cases there they were lined up in all their glory dressed from head to toe in black attire, by the nothing to declare channel at least 10 of the buggers, the customs peeps more akin to the Gestapo but without the Swastika or Jack boots.

H/M just ambled over as you do and happened to mention that they were not a very nice/welcoming thing to behold if it was your first time in Blighty.

I cant imagine why but I got stopped as I walked through. First thing they asked was what was my address so I reeled it orf my Thai one of cause, no your English one, it gave me great pleasure to state I live in the far east so no fixed abode. Then it was were are you staying, reply dossing out in Oxford street but will be visiting family. What are their addresses, none of your business, they then used their initiative and looked at the back of my passport to see my just in case of problems who to contact were.

By this time I think I had wound them up enough. No sense of humour these custom peeps.

Anyway well over half an hour later H/M was let through it wasn't a problem as I had told the cab driver to be there later than normal.

Not long now 25 days and counting till my return on EVA from the new terminal 2 on the 4th will stay in BKK on the 5 and my cab driver Sam will take me up to K.P.P on the 6th just in time for the floating down the river thing on the 7th.

Out tonight for an expensive beer or two with some of the lads. Will look out for some jellied eels as I travel through.

Ah Nascar Sprint, you really must have been bored! Round and round we go at 200mph and only stop at the end or when there;s a spectacular crash. I think that the crashes are why most people watch!

Are kippers like shoes? Everything that I see seems to indicate that they only come in pairs ("pares" is not in the dictionary Cambridge or Webster). What happens if you only want one? Are you still charged for a pair?

Immigration must have increased their watch! You most have looked like a terrorist using Thailand as the "HUB" of your operations and KKP as your base.

24 left if you're still counting!!

It wasn't immigration it was the planks of wood that open your cases to see if you have got more than 1 fag to many. Immigration is now a put your passport in a slide and it does it automatically. That's why I had a go.

Yes only 24 now and still counting. Out last night 3 pints of bitter £11+ thank Buddha I had sorted my overdraft.

Today up north going to see one of my daughters new small holdings not Texas size but large for here.

Have got a new sat nav only hope I don't get lost.

TV seems to have gone all haywire totally different format well from today anyway only good thing all the adverts have gone on the missing list.

On the terrorist bit. How could I have looked like one I did after all have my full hunting attire on.

Just looked on the internet as TV advised down loading flash 9 just one small problem it was discontinued in 2011 well done TV.

This site seems to tell me all that I need to know about buying and cooking kippers but no where can I find out why I can only buy 1 and not a pair! Are they somehow joined and cannot be seperated? If they are cold smoked why do they need to be cooked and not eaten "raw" such as lox or red herring?

Lox/smoked salmon are cured first before being smoked hence edible.

Smoked herring (Kipper) are not, so at best like eating raw fish tough, somewhat resembling Mr's H/M now there's a thought.

And you Can buy them in the singular or uneven amounts, it's just that most of us upper class eat two at a time, that's if they are not to big. H/M struggled with the pair I had and only managed to consume 2 large slices of crusty bread with same.

Whilst on the subject of food what is it with you Colonist's fixation with Mc & cheese only the poor eat that in Blighty, a bit like baked beans on toast for dinner.

For all those that like to keep abreast of things H/M Roast four rib of Beef with all the trimmings went down very well yesterday. Even managed for a short time to take the thought of the rain and cold away.

Going out to sort some bits out today have already put my Ski gear over the radiators to warm up prior to my orf.

22 and still counting.

Big market setting up on Riverside Road running east from Srinakorn market yesterday, I would sggest you avoid this road for about 7 days, I think this weekend is the dragon boat racing if anyone is interested. I expect will turn up to mingke with localsand savour the delights of the Noodles, word has it that the special flavours to be revealed are.............Cheese and Onion.......Salt and Vinegar......Noodle.......( yes noodle flavoured noodles) and West Ham flavour!

Posted

What no "pair of Kipper" flavor!

Yes a rum pore show how H/M would like to know can it be the centre of the world for Noodles if you cant get all the flavours. Mc&Cheese for our colonist friends seems to be on the missing list as well. Re the West Ham ones they don't taste like soap like in the bubbles we blow???

News.

H/M has had no TV not T Visa but TV since I've been back, my mother lives in a very bad signal position and her aerial has gone on the blink. Her TV work's ok as she has a dish but my one plus the one in the kitchen is no more.

All I can look at if I view hers is soaps and old lady stuff that she watches, that's till 9pm when she goes to bed. Thank Buddha for the internet.

Right today it's going to be fixed a chum is going to fit a free sat dish with that I can get many different cannels.

Weather.

It's cold had nothing but rain and high winds but they promise today it will be at least 14c that's 58f in old money, rain will arrive later cant wait.

H/M Limo aka the tank has been fixed will be returned to H/M mansions in a day or two.

Other than that I'm eating for England if only to keep my strength up and the cold out.

Glad to see the fun is still ongoing in Blighty, soaps indeed, whata load of old tripe, its like time going backwards added to which there are the pletherer of cooking, do your house, dig the garden etc TV has gone downhill all over the world, The Americans did warn us what all day TV and ranks of channels would bring!

I am sure we wish H/M a jolly good time in the UK whilst on his secret mission to find the Nakhon Sawan Noodle factory (UK) and sell them his special KPP flavours, shoe in the road, horse luggage spicy, stable boy's fancy, plastic bag moo chilli, iced coffee ping ping flavour.

Well I am orf to Patters tomorrow, they are so short of quality tourists they rang and asked me come down and breath some life into the place, as well as opening a few noodle establishments, giving chop stick lessons to farangs. The highlight will be open a new soup and steak eatery that only provides chop sticks, anyone caught usung a spoons, knife or fork will be shot, apparently its going down big Bangkork.

Have to dash now, so toodle pip and cheerio.

Looks like pore old Dave has picked the wrong time to go to Patts have just seen on the TV news that they have had yet more floods due to the heavy rain. I await updates from him on same. Will more than likely be about the water flavoured Noodles he's found.

Update on Blighty.

Nothing out or the ordinary to report we have according to the weather peeps have a storm coming over from the Colonist, should hit around late afternoon then the temp: is going to drop to around 6/7c overnight with a high of low teens day time. Joy of joys H/M cant wait.

14 days + a few hours left and counting, but it's not going fast enough.

We have now returned from the official visit to Patters where I can report its a a bit short of visitors, especially Russians surprisingly, still met some very nice expats round the pool. 2nd road is being resurfaced so a lot of dust up the north end, only had rain on the sunday afternoon otherwise rather nice.

Its getting cooler here in the morning and evening as well.

Had some nice nosh down in Patters but not a Loch Fine Kipper in sight and would like to see Fred eat 2 at the same time can you imagine 2 tails hanging out of his gob?

More police checks on the way down and back between N/S and Bangers, seem to after over loaded pick ups, one appeared to have a whole tree in the back, it would have taken up 2 lanes, bad luck they got pulled or just bad luck?

Roadworks on the ring road 9 eastern side both directions and on the way to Patters (7) also in both directions for anyone using these routes.

Dont know about Fred but kippers make me burp and you smell of fish all day, continually being followed by cats, so I tend not miss them too much these days although I must say that the smell of stables and horses is pretty similar. I hear that there has been a lot of wind over the UK these last few days could be linked to the kippers and burping and no doubt soon to be linked to Climate change.

Glad to see you had a nice time Dave, boring yet more peeps round the pool with tails of Noodles no doubt.

I can hear you now, of cause we live up north just outside K.P.P. with not a mention of N/S in site.

Regarding Kippers the heads and tails as befitting us upper class are cut orf prior to cooking cant be doing with any of that tat on my plate.

Don't panic they don't go to waste as along with the crust on the bread we give them to the needy and lower classes, you mob in N/S should receive them in a day or two.

So there is still traffic problems repair wise on the 9 its been like that for months Na years, good job you N/S boys are used to crap Soi's home from home as they say. What gets me is you still have to pay to travel on it.

I hate to tell all this but H/M will also have to make a visit to Patts sometime around the 24th Nov: have to see some chums that are holidaying in same staying at the Centara G,M beach resort north Patts.

H/M will of cause not be staying there a trite to pricy even for H/M at around 5,000+bt a night without breakfast, they also don't allow any of your latest chums in your room after 6pm, rum pore show if you ask me.

But I will be using all their facilities not forgetting their free afternoon snacks that arrive round the pool between 3/4 pm.

Will also be going on my own Mrs H/M will be left at H/M mansions to take care of the staff. At this point I must thank Buddha for all his help regarding same.

Update on Blighty.

Same as I have stated before. Cold hovering around 12/14c daytime 6/7c at night, overcast not had to much rain though.

Mum's Limo has had to have yet another new battery second in 16 months glad to say fitted free of charge as still under guarantee. All should be ok now as have had them fit an all singing all dancing one.

H/M had to get up at the Buddha forsaken time of 7am today arriving at the garage at 8,20am to get the Limo checked out electric wise happy to report all is fine.

Orf out for a pint or two of Bitter with the lads tomorrow night.

12 days to go and counting down, Yippee.

Not a mention of the West Ham Footer win I notice, a true supporter! So aprt from the battery, saw it on the BBC news, downing a few beers and the weather not much happening in Blighty then.

Meanwhile here in Nakkers the boat racing has drawn to a close and the stands and market will be coming down starting tomorrow so Riverside Road should be clear and back to normal from tuesday for anyone on their way to Immigration.

The noodles were all imports from the province that shall remain nameless to the north and had a strong smell of kippers that had gone orf and straw masquarading as noodles, you can fool some of the people all the time but not noodle experts like we have here, the police were called and an ejection carried out.

H/M I'll have you know has been very bizzy.

Friday evening saw me going to meet up with chums when a blasted woman no less tried to overtake without enough room to do so, and made a dent in H/M limos front orf side wing, dash pore show and all that came from my lips.

Thinking she would stop and exchange details I slowed down only to find her buggering orf down the Soi big time.

Fatal out with the whip and with the sound of Tally Ho ringing out, orf I sped soon to catch up with the afore mentioned miscreant. Lot's of flashing of lights a tooting on the hunting horn all to no avail so at this point I phone 999 that's the cops in Blighty to anyone who happens to be a non English type person, to report same.

I was told to take down number make of car the bounder was driving, and report it to the local police asap. That wasn't going to put a downer on my night out so Saturday found H/M in the cop shop giving details of the misdemeanour.

As luck would have it on my way home I espied a jellied Eel stall, so a quick stop orf for some comestibles just to cheer myself up. One med size bowl of Eels vinegar pepper and some Cockles small dish of same also dresses likewise, All was delish well until I got the check bin only to find that it totalled a short £7.

I ask you £7 for some Eels and the likes but I did get a free bit of bread so I suppose that makes up for the exorbitant cost quite took the edge orf the hole thing.

Then had to spend what seemed like several hours on the phone but was more like about 30 Minutes sorting out the insurance.

Tomorrow Monday will find H/M spending yet more time on the phone dealing with the police more than likely + lots of sorting out to book the Limo in to have it fixed.

The only thing that is saving me from topping myself is the fact it's only 8 days till my orf + West Ham knocking the lights out of M/City, 2/1.

Roast Beef with all the trimmings today also Delish, beats Noodles any day.

Oh nearly forgot this afternoon there was a program on the TV featuring the Isle Of Man and as part of it they had a trip to the Manx smoking factory where low and behold they were Oak smoking Herrings turning them into Kippers or Smoked kippers if your a colonist, just to round that orf they sat down a ate some, made H/M mouth water so tomorrow it Kippers for lunch.

Looks like you had a day like my weeks been!

Got up Thursday morning and the kitchen floor was wet! First thought was G^%&$#n dogs! Wish it was, because it turned out that the fridge had gone tits-up and everything was defrosting. Next went outside and the carport was flooded, the tank on my pump had sprung a leak.

I unloaded the fridge, put some things in the other fridge, threw most of the unknown defrosted stuff out, cleaned it and took it to the shop Friday morning. Of course the guy wasn't there and I left it. The wife called Saturday morning and the gut said that a part was coming from Bangkok but wouldn't be fixed until Monday since Sat and Sun was his days off.

I found the leak in the pump, a small hole most likely caused by a dirty weld. I took a pan head self tapping screw, put a metal washer on it and then a rubber washer made from an old inner tube and screwed it into the hole fully expecting the tank to disintegrate. It went in okay and the leaks turned into a small drip. Found a distributor in Bangkok and ordered a new tank to be sent EMS this week to the tune of 2520baht. The one that I bought a few years ago for a different pump was only 1200baht.

I TV repair shop called and told me that the TV that I took for repair needed a new picture tube, so that's junk as it's not worth fixing!

And after all of that I get to test Bangkokian's driving skills tomorrow as I have to go to the Embassy to get my Income affidavit as my extension is due for renewal next week. Leave home at 0400, park at Foodland Soi 5, have breakfast, taxi to and back from embassy, shop at Foodland, stop at Tesco in Singburi and home around 3PM if all goes well! But the way it's been going lately I wouldn't bet on it.

But all in all it's definitely better than rain, wind and cold!

Today has been good to me.

I went down to Immigration this morning arriving about 11 am to find that I was the only customer for a 90 day report. In and out in 5 minutes. They took my passport, went on to the computer and printed the report form out with some of the details on it but not my address or phone number. I had to do that bit manually. That was my second attempt.

The first was last Thursday which was a total but as I didn't look on the Thai calendar to find that Thursday was Chulalongkorn day and Immigration was closed as was the toilet. The tourist Police office was open and they told me about the holiday and apologised to me even though it was totally my fault. They also let me use their toilets. Nice people.

After that I went down the riverside road and over into Vitheethep road looking for parts for my Honda strimmer. I took a wrong turn and followed the road until I had to cross the river to do a U turn. I came back up again I did a run around the temple and the market and found the place I was looking for.

On the way home I treated myself to exotic international cuisine at McDs. It wasn't brilliant but filled the gap.

The total time was about 5 hrs 45 mins and only 5 minutes was at Immigration.

My wife and son are in Malaysia at an English language camp. They went on Saturday night and get back to KPP around 5.30 on Sunday morning.

It is soooo quiet around here.

Have a great week guys.

I wish you the best of luck Wayne as it will be a loong days down and back especially getting back out of Soi 5 on the way home.

Actually if it goes per plan, as it has in the past, the trip should work fine. I get there around 0630 and park in the Foodland lot above the store missing all of the morning traffic. After the Embassy, 0730 appointment, I go back to Foodland and futz around until about 1000. Then turn left out of the lot go down to the hotel, cross over to Soi 7 and back to Suk. Wait for the light to stop traffic at Soi 4 go down to Soi 23, u turn and back to the entrance to the tollway. Then back to Bang Pa-in missing most of the morning traffic.

My water tank didn't ship today since the lady that I was dealing with forgot to come to work and the fridge isn't fixed as the tech/owner is still in Bangkok. His son was feeding my wife BS about a part having been ordered as he hasn't even looked at it yet. Why am I not surprised!

It's quiet here too as most of the local corn has been harvested and the next crop, sunflowers, has been planted. We've got a contract to harvest about 1000 rai of corn near Ban Rai and the beast will be heading that way next week. It's about time for "black lung" disease time to start since the sugar cane will be ready for harvest in a couple of weeks and last to Songkran, burning the stuff every night.

Probably off to immigration to do my extension on Thursday morning early I might stop at Makro but have no intention of going anyplace else. I go the back way past the entrance to the prison and never get to the traffic light at Sawanvitee.

What busy bee we are.

Just reading your post and it seems to me that you have made a Freudian slip.

To-Wit then turn left out of the lot go down to THE HOTEL seems to be around Soi 4 pray tell all what HOTEL is this not the Nana perchance, and you have forgotten to mention that you will be staying overnight???. Pity it's not the 5th Nov: as H/M will be there on that date we could have had a night out on the town discussing the niceties of smoked kippers.

Well done you on getting the beast to work for it's living about time it's had to much of a rest.

Re Fridge not trying to rub it in but when our fridge went on the blink the repair peeps came to collect it and started work on it strait away 2 days 'had it on test for 24 hours' later it was delivered installed. I think it's called service we do seem to get that here in K.P.P allegedly the place to live if your up north of BKK.

But it could be my H/M status. Then again the picture of Mrs H/M adorned on it's side, might have put the fear of Buddha up them.

H/M.

Not a Fruedian slip! Have you ever been to the parking lot above Foodland on Soi 5? The entrance to the parking lot is on Soi 5 and Soi 5 is, supposedly, one way. So when you exit you have to turn left. You go to the end which is at the Royal Benja Hotel and turn right as you can go no further. Then you turn right on Soi 7 and back to Suk. Then turn left on Suk to Soi23, Asok junction, and do a u turn. Go back down Suk and veer right at Soi 4 and get back on the tollway heading north just past the train tracks. Then go all the way to the end which exits on the ring road, 9.

The beast has earned it's keep locally and has brought in over a million baht, gross, in addition to harvesting our own corn. It's now off to be a migrant worker in another Province, no work permit required as being driven by a Thai.

As far as the fridge is concerned the guy is usually very good. But as it turns out he and his wife went to Bangkok and left his son in charge. Being typical Thai the son kept giving lame excuses to keep me from taking it somewhere else (there's only one other place) until I finally got the owner's cell number. We'll see what happens now as he's supposed to be back from Bangkok today.

Off to Bangkok in about 80 minutes. fun and games!

Glad to say that I haven't ever been to Foodland soi 5 although their produce is good it's at a price I'm not prepared to pay, EG their English Pork sausages 'average taste' are over 100bt a kl more than I pay.

But I do know what you mean about that junction go down here then there what a performance just to get back on the expressway there must be a better way of organising it.

H/M has been stopped several times by the BIB telling me I have gone through the wrong ticket booth there. As luck would have it have never had to pay their tip monies.

A bit late now but it's a quicker route (Rout) to bear left after entering the expressway towards Ding Dang and use the expressway that goes past the old airport and not the 9 although a trite more expensive some 20bt well worth it as you will save about 1/2 hour journey time, could be even more now the 9 is under repair.

Re fridge always better to deal with the top man orf to BKK must be earning to much.

Hope you had a good successful trip.

Blighty. The car has been sorted damage wise goes in next Monday will be returned Wed/Thursday I'm going to pay for it and then get a refund from the insurance Co: had to do it that way or it would have been wait quite sometime for the police report, then it would have also meant my Mother would be left with all the problems.

Still cold but very little rain well in London anyway, up north is a different thing.

7 days and still going down.

H/M.
