Abhisit Flew to Japan Yesterday to Restore Japanese Investor Confidence

BANGKOK: -- The Opposition party leader flew to Japan on his official visit to discuss with Japanese politicians and business entrepreneurs who were affected by last year's flooding.

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva revealed he has a mission to meet Japanese politicians as well as a number of entrepreneurs from the insurance business today.

Abhisit insisted that his official visit has been originally scheduled by the Democrat Party since by the end of last year. His plan to visit Japan took place when the flood crisis severely impacted Japanese investment in Thailand.

Abhisit said that many Japanese companies were adversely affected by recent flooding as water overwhelmed many industrial estates. He said the Democrat Party has reached a consensus that it should help restore confidence among the international community.

Abhisit stated he would like to take action, insisting that Thailand significantly placed importance on Japan. As a result, his party coordinated with the Embassy of Japan in Thailand to confirm his official visit since last November to December.

He reaffirmed that he do not determine to cut ahead of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Abhisit said he will meet with the Japanese government and their opposition party to exchange their opinions with the aims to strengthen relationships between both countries. He will insisted before the Japanese politicians that any political changes would not affect the close ties between the two countries.

Abhisit stated he would discuss with the former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama. He will also have a chance to meet former Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada who is being the deputy prime minister and Democratic Party of Japan's senior adviser. Abhisit then planned to meet the Liberal Democratic Party leader who is the former finance minister.

Moreover, he will meet the insurance company Chief Executive Officer whose company was extensively affected by last year's flooding. His itinerary has been scheduled from February 29 to March 2.

Isn't what he is proposing to do extremely unethical?

.......On what grounds? Could you specify your concern?

Well good luck with that Khun Abhisit. I should think that the Japanese have got their hands full clearing up the mess after their latest tsunami, particularly their insurance companies.

He's in the opposition party. Should he be making such "quasi-official" visits with the purpose of discussing national matters? As he lost the election, doesn't that automatically mean he does not have a mandate for such an agenda?

I know I shouldn't abuse of the emoticons (I've been called "obscene" for that ?!?) but after reading this article my first reaction is : cheesy.gif

Come on, an opposition MP (means without mandate or credibility) take a few days holidays in a neighborhood country where he is going to met a couple of retired politicians and the title is : "A. travels to Japan to restore Japanese investor confidence".

"Official visit" "he has a mission" ... if it wasn't from a source that is well known for always be very liberal with the facts, I would assume that the poor A. hasn't recovered from his last year defeat and has permanently moved to la-la land.

I'm sure it puts out a much better image of Thailand to other countries than has been done recently, certainly looks better a member of the opposition visiting other countries as a representative of his country much more so than a convicted criminal doing it,,

So no one should be visiting ASSK? She isn't even elected to anything, and certainly isn't part of the government.

Abhisit is elected, so as a member of parliament and a representative of the largest opposition party there is no reason why he shouldn't talk to other government's officials.

"a consensus that it should help restore confidence among the international community."

Irregardless of any party representative, the main issue is the liability factor - to restore any

international community.

He's the leader of the political party in opposition, not a tuk tuk driver.

Probably one of the very few from Thailand that can dance on the world stage without falling over their feet or their mouth.cowboy.gif

That's because he has very healthy ears.

Did someone not tell him he lost?

If you think he lost......Think again...clap2.gif

I think all of us remember he lost the election, that is all but yourself.

I dont know why he is going. Not his problem. According to todays news in the Nation, Yingluck has already fixed it up as most Japanese companies have stated they are staying and at their original sites.

He is a man on no mission.

But he does not watch bloomburg or he would know that due to the nuke plant problems the Japanese already said they are coming in force and most are staying as the flood problem is nothing like the problems they will face with power cost etc at home. Oh wait - I see - In the future he can say he did it. Something he has nothing at all to do with. Besides being late to the party the party is over - I guess he didn't get the word. Enjoy your vacation Mark..

Well for one he is a former PM, and knows the lay of the land well.

He is perfectly able to have substantive conversations with Japanese investors and politicians.

You need not be in office to talk with people and talk up your nation as a whole and in specifics.

It is not unusual for private citizens to make visits with officials of other nations.

As leader of the current opposition, but also former PM, he worked with some of these people,

and there is no ethical breach for him to speak with those he used to interact with.

He can't make promises for the government, but he can say what he thinks is happening,

and what he would do if he returns to office in the future. And if he can plug the hemorrhage

of Japanese cash leaving Thailand for safer investments, he helps Thailand in a large way.

8-30% of Japanese investment not returning post flood, numbers Yingluck apparently

is not capable of correcting.

...Well, if the Japanese are 'coming in force', all the more reason to go and have a chat with them first innit.

Yes, and no.

No he can't speak for PTP.... he has no grounds for it's defense.

Yes, Abihist would be thinking beyond typical political infighting

and towards saving Thailand as a whole from economic collapse.
