Anybody in the know about what Tescos are planning here? They seem to have quietly started expanding with their new Express stores opening up all over the island - usually in direct competition with Family Mart and 7-11.

I read this article today ... http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/0f83ae78-6643-11e1-979e-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1oCIwBLu2

It's from the Financial Times in the UK, and tells about the $600m (in THB) that the Tescos Property Fund has just raised and plans to "invest the proceeds of the IPO in its Thai network. Its more than 900 retail outlets around the country range from small “value stores” to hypermarkets in large malls." Seems to me that they have spotted an opportunity as daily they are sending over lorries full of produce for their 2 main stores on the island - it shouldn't be that difficult to supply the smaller stores at the same time?

Maybe they are taking on the convenience stores we already have here?clap2.gif

The article also states that in the next few months they "also plan(s) to become Thailand’s first online grocery retailer". Have to admit I am a bit sceptical about this last bit, I mean, 3B who installed my telephone line can't find me. So what chance does Tescos have?laugh.png

Reminds me of the time that UPS (Bangkok) refused to accept a package from China because they had no record of the Thai post code (on the packet's address) for my area.

In spite of both myself, my Thai girlfriend and also the sender in China telling them (in repeated phone calls and emails - dozens over a 10-day period) that all they had to do was Google the word Thailand plus the post code and they'd get an exact address, right at the top of the first page - they couldn't or wouldn't do it. Nor was anyone in their office clever enough to check with a post office in BKK.

Perhaps they are clearing off the selves in Chawang Tesco.... to fill the Tesco express??? laugh.png

I noticed today that a new sections looks like it might be "devoted to the Farang market" ... ???? In the Isle next to where the coffee etc is....

Marmite, in two sizes of jars....ohmy.png ..... well perhaps only for the expat Brits & maybe a good substitute for Ozzy Vegemite ????

The rest of the world hates the stuff! bah.giftongue.png

I'm looking forward to the day I can use Tescos for my directions, as opposed to 7-11. We're nearly there ....

Coming from Big Buddha, past Tescos on your left, carry on to the traffic lights, take a left. After the next Tescos on your right, at the second set of lights, take a left. Carry on to the next Tescos, and voila, you are there. Chaweng.biggrin.png (Obvioulsy it needs a little fine-tuning, as it is not exactly a short cut!)

I'm totally confused by the above directions!biggrin.png

But happened to see there is another new Tesco Express, between Lipa Noi and Ban Sa Ket on left side of the road.... a kilometer or so past the Raja ferry traffic lights.. (headed south from Nanthon)... now that would be lots easier to find..... just a long drive... from Chawang! rolleyes.gifohmy.pngwhistling.gif

Wonder how many more are planned ???
