Bringing Foodstuffs Into Los

what a strange question, I can think of no reason on earth that you couldnt bring in an unopened packet of beef suet, into any country.

Not a strange question at all - a matter of self preservation. One reason is that many countries ban the import of foodstuff and you can get into fairly serious trouble if you get caught. The US and Australia are two countries that spring to mind. I wondered whether Thailand has similar restrictions.

Oh goody. Suet dumplings. Christmas pud?

Yes Thailand does have similar regulations, but not so stringently enforced.

I doubt you will have a problem with the odd packet or two.

I never have. Not suet :o but I have brought other items over the years.

Does anyone know if there are regulations against taking small quantities of foodstuffs (specifically beef suet) into Thailand?

Short answer is ....No...there is no customs checks, however if they find it they may confiscate it, either for themselves or for resale.

Prohibited Goods and Restricted Goods:

Prohibited goods are goods for which either the import into or export out of the kingdom is prohibited, e.g. drugs, pornographic materials, protected wild animals or related products, etc. Violators of laws related to illicit drugs, e.g. having and holding, holding for use, or being a producer, seller or transporter are subject to the death sentence.

Restricted goods are goods the import and export of which are restricted by law and therefore require a permit from the related government agencies. The following items require a permit from the government agency concerned in order to go through the Customs formalities.

• Firearms, ammunitions, explosive objects (Office of National Police)

• Buddha images, artefacts and antiques (Fine Arts Department)

• Radio transceivers and telecommunications equipment (Post & Telegraph Department)

• Plants and planting materials (Department of Agriculture)

• Live animals and animal products (Department of Live Stock Development)

• Medicines and chemical products (Office of Food and Drugs Administration)

Why bother importing Suet when you can make your own. I found this on the net.

Suet is raw beef fat from around the kidneys and loins. It’s also known as beef tallow.

How to Render Suet:

You can trim excess fat off beef cuts and store in the freezer until enough fat is achieved or you can purchase beef fat from your butcher.

1. Grind the beef fat with a meat grinder or finely chop the fat.

2. Heat the fat over a low to medium flame until it’s liquefied.

3. Strain by pouring melted suet through a fine cheesecloth.

4. Let cool to harden.

5. Repeat steps 2-3. If the fat is not rendered twice, the suet will not cake properly.

6. Let cool to harden and store in a covered container in the freezer.
