Here are tourism arrivals by gender. For the first part of last year, 39.9% of tourist arrivals to Thailand were female. Among Europeans, that percent was 43%.

http://www.tourism.g.../Sex-Travel.pdf

Note that 'sex-travel' there refers to gender of arrivals, nothing more

China

http://www.cnto.org/...alsByAgeSex.asp

In China 35.7% of arrivals were female

Here are statistics for the UK.

http://www.visitbrit...data/index.aspx

43% of tourist to the UK are female. The percent is higher than Thailand, but not significantly. A 50/50 gender ratio among tourists is not normal. Men travel more. Especially to a far off destination.

Some men certainly are going for sex. But they are vastly outnumbered by the millions who are not. The bars would be heaving with customers instead of being half empty and there wouldn't be so many shutting down or doing poorly otherwise.

Let's add to that 43% the 3 million, of which were 480,000 US citizens, coming for cheap medical services. Last years quota of visitors is suppositioned at 11.2 million. 3/11.2=0.28 , so there's another 28% that were not here for the sex industry (maybe a very very small percentage indulged, but I doubt it). So we're upto 71% of tourists not here for the sex trade. Then there's families and couples, which there appear to be no stats for, and yet I see plenty of lovey dovey couples touring hand in hand, and certainly lots of families with babies and children, and even if that number is only 15%, as a low haphazard guess, we are upto 86% of farang not here for sex.

There's your rough figures Thai at Heart. Care to comment on the viable truth of these figures.

Add to those figures the armed services or various countries, who do come onshore and go to use the 'services of vice' probably a good million a year from all countries, and don't forget it was the US invasion of Vietnam that caused this massive reputation downfall of Thailand being free and easy when it came to girls, when they had AK-47s on their backs, I think you find it is about 10% of farang who do come here purely for the sex industry.

What say ye, being Thai at heart? ;)

Thais cannot be honest with each other. It's a thought I formed after having lived in the country for a couple of years. This does not mean I agree with the statement the activist finds offensive; I just understand how this all got to this point now.

Well, quite. I've yet to hear a song make reference to any other country than Magnetic Field's '... on a ferris wheel on Coney Island underneath more stars than there are prostitutes in Thailand', or is it simply that it rhymes? Or, for a male visitor to be handed a box of condoms when asking his MD for vacs for his upcoming visit to, again, Thailand.

Although some of you seem to be living in de Nile.

And the fact that even 5-star hotels place a pack or two of condoms* in the hotel room's courtesy package must really upset you.

* Proper pain in the willy anyway as they are invariably the smallest size, made for local tadgers.

True, but it's the world's largest low quality brothel. If there is a country in the world where most women are totally unskilled and uninteresd in sex, this is Thailand. It's easy to have sex in Thailand, but difficult to have good sex. It's easy to get into a relationship in Thailand, but difficult to get into a good ,meaningful, adult relationship.Any guy having experience with ' latina' will agree with me...

Well I don't know.... after about 15 years in Thailand, 5 years in Brazil, 2 years in Cuba and dating a Colombiana caliente in Texas, I reckon if you shop higher and pay more, all sex is good and all relationships are meaningful, regardless of the locale.

Yeah, but when they slip off you get the real deal, and always carry a pencil, a magnifying glass and a torch! giggle.gif

In the face of strong competition from the Philippines, India, Russia and many South American states. Thailand should be proud to get the top ratings.

If it's all prostitution and not just sex tourism I think India thrashes Thailand into submission in this competition. Russia, America and China wallop it on sheer numbers. I'd bet many African and Middle Eastern countries would dominate it with local on local. Then of course there's South London.

South London? You mean Battersea Dogs home?

Khun Natee has spent a substantial part of his life trying to help people, unlike the dregs of this site who do nothing but sit at home and fire off nasty comments on every topic. Just saying.

If he has done what you say then that is great. But it does not mean that what he does now is not wrong. To try to suppress other people's right to express their opinion. It can't be seen as a crime to say in public what has been stated so many times before. If Khun Natee thinks the higher than average proliferation of brothels is a problem, maybe he should try to fix that instead of shooting the messenger? It just seems vindictive and pointless.

Yeah the guy has done good works but he has also done some really goofy things, and I think the general public thinks he represents the gay people of Thailand, and I really don't think that he does.

He just should have the word "brothel" replaced with the word "miracle". Then his comment would even suit the current TAT campaign: Miracle Thailand.

Live and let live. Most of the bar/massage ladies I know are not forced into doing sex work. They like the fast easy money and allows them to make as much as doctor. Considering their educational backround and other factors there are not a lot of high paying jobs for them.

Public hospital physicians get about 30K/month. There actually is some crossover between bar girls and doctors and perhaps the girls perform even more urologic procedures and prostate exams.

Yeah , its hard to hear the truth .... compare with Thailand , some red districts in other countries looks like convents . I wonder if all massage parlors, gogo bars, escort service etc ...would close there would be a huge drop in tourism revenue.

Probably not.

Most of the Thai sex industry is Thai oriented.

In fact I would hazard a guess that if the tourist oriented sex industry was removed and they focused on more family activities they could even increase the number of tourists.

Absolutely agree.

Why on earth do you think women in Thailand are uninterested in sex ?

% with medium or higher interest and ability is very small. Based on multiple opinions from "outside the box Thai nationals (male and female and lesbian) that typically lived/studied abroad and returned, and opinions of western males that have dated all levels of society.

Then again lots of Thai girls don't like having sex for the same reason they don't like wearing crash helmets.... it messes up their hair!

I detest these filthy exaggerations on Thai morals. Honolulu beats Bangkok hands down in any elicit activity competition. Or better yet, how about Amsterdam, NYC, or LA? Foreigners should clean their own nests, before slamming Thailand.

Khun Nathee, you will not change the factual situation with what you're doing now. It's a fact, admit it. And after all, what's the fuss about it: you want tourism anyhow to promote, so continue to give what the great majority of tourists are asking. Only simple minds believe that the majority of tourists are coming here to see the beauty of the nature (for what they have to pay tenfold of the Thais) or the kitch-architecture of Thai pagoda's (exception made for [all] the Khmer styled pagodas like Phanom Rung and Phimai). Preah Vihear is even not Thailand...

Thai ladies are beautiful and friendly, serving well and joyful! They are your ambassadors with their friendly smile and their sexy charm. We all know it's fake (like so many other things in Thailand), but it's nice, attracting and extremely seducing. That's the product that attracts and promotes Thailand and nothing else except a few things for which Farangs are [officially] ripped-off... It's time that you start understanding about Thai tourism from the tourist' side... but therefore you should NOT be Thai!

Well Pattaya is one of if not the largest red light district on earth. While other Asian countries have just as much if not more prostitution, they don't usually allow foreigners while Pattaya is aimed at them

Have you never heard of Angeles, Burgos St,Olongapo (Subic), International Entertainment Complex (Pasay) etc? Actually in the Philippines even the dingiest local places will quite happily admit foreigners as long as you can pay the bill. Apart from that just go pretty well anywhere that the US military have a permanent base and you will find plenty of brothels. Part of the mission to spread the culture perhaps. I don't necessarily disagree with the statement but it probably isn't the smartest thing to say about your own country in fact it is a bit boastful if you put emphasis on the . In comparison if a TV presenter in Manila made a similar statement their career would be over and they would probably be lying in a pool of their own blood soon after

If this is a competition for concentration of putas on one area, I don't think you can beat Mexico City. When I was there I wandered off into the "wrong" neighborhood and it was mind boggling, miles and miles of street walkers straight out of a Fellini movie. For me it was about as sexually appealing as a can of paint but it did make an impression. Never saw anything in Thailand to come close.

Who had AK-47's on their backs? I was in Vietnam. When I wanted a hooker I went to Australia not Thailand during that time as did a lot of other GI's. Thailand had a reputation for Prostitution years before the GI's got here. America just taught them to dance a bit better. Go go's were an American invention I think. I could be wrong but I think it was Carole Doda in California or something around there at that time. Actually the rush was started by Germans, the GI's left in 1975 before Pattaya really got going.
