Missing Cold Pills Dumped in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- The Department of Special Investigation director-general reveals that empty packs of cold pills with pseudoephedrine as their ingredient were dumped in 39 black trash bags in Chiang Mai Province.

Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, Director-General Tharit Pengdit revealed that empty packs of cold tablets containing pseudoephedrine as an ingredient were dumped in the Kok River in Chiang Rai Province.

Moreover, additional cold pill packs were found dumped at two spots on the shoulder of a road in Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng District.

Officials found 14 trash bags of totally crushed cold medicine packs at the first spot.

In the second spot, 25 trash bags containing cold pill packs in good condition were found.

The bags also contained documents regarding the source of the pills and reference numbers so the police will find where the pills came from.

Police believe that suspects, who smuggled the cold medication out of hospitals to sell to drug gangs to be made into methamphetamine, attempted to destroy the pill packs due to a crackdown on the case by the police and the DSI.

Cold Pills Dumped in Chiang Mai to Be Probed

CHIANG MAI: -- The Chiang Mai governor has set up a taskforce to investigate the dumping of cold pill packs with pseudoephedrine as their ingredient.

Chiang Mai Governor Mom Luang Panadda Disakul presided over a press conference to disclose details about the dumping of cold pill packs with pseudoephedrine as their ingredient in Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng District yesterday.

The director of the Narcotics Control Technology Center, along with Chiang Mai's Public Health office and affiliated units, were also present. From the initial assessment, approximately three million cold pills were found.

Authorities believe there is a link with the dumping of empty cold pill packs in San Kamphaeng District on February 18.

The governor has set up a taskforce to investigate the case, made up of representatives from the Provincial Police Region 5, the Chiang Mai Police Division, the Provincial Administration Organization, the Narcotics Control Technology Center Region 5, the Chiang Mai Public Health office, and the Chiang Mai Food and Drug Administration.

Chiang Mai Deputy Police Commander, Police General Panudet Boonruang revealed that the pill packs and boxes are very similar to those found dumped in February.

However, some packs of pills were produced in 2010, and their source have not been identified, while pill packs that were found in February were found to have come from Thong Saen Khan District of Uttaradit Province.

In the meantime, Chiang Mai Public Health officer Doctor Surasingh Wisarutrat said an examination of cold pill purchase orders at state hospitals in Chiang Mai Province found irregularities at Hod and Doi Lor hospitals.

Both hospitals are now under investigation and conclusions are expected to be drawn shortly.
