Five promoted to general in army reshuffle

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The midyear military reshuffle sees the elevation of five classmates of Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha to the rank of full general to fill advisory positions.

The promotion is seen as ceremonial because the five are slated for mandatory retirement in September.

The five include Second Army Region commander Lt-General Thawatchai Samutsakorn and Third Army Region commander Lt-General Wanthip Wongwai.

Prayuth portrayed the reshuffle as low-key, saying the line-up was routine in accordance with seniority.

He said some graduates of Pre-Cadet Class 20 might have been put on the fast track for promotion but they had job performance to justify being rewarded.

He also said his brother Maj-General Preecha Chan-ocha was not disappointed at being overlooked in the reshuffle.

Preecha was previously tipped to become the commander of the Third Army Region. But Prayuth said his brother was a graduate of Pre-Cadet Class 15 and none of his classmates had reached a senior position.

The reshuffled list involving 127 positions was released on Wednesday after royal endorsement.

Of 127 positions, the Army saw 47 officers rotated. Key appointments included Lt-General Channarong Thanarun becoming commander of the Third Army Region and Lt-General Wibul Pongklansanoh becoming commander of the Second Army Region.

Maj-General Somsak Nilbanjerdkul is slated to become commander of the 1st Cavalry Division.

Colonel Noppawong Surawichai is to be elevated to the rank of major-general in the position of commander of the 5th Infantry Division, a unit newly formed to deal with the southern insurgency.

Colonel Archanai Srisuk is to be elevated to the rank of major-general leading the 3rd Cavalry Division, a newly formed unit based in Khon Kaen.

Sixteen Army colonels are to become major-generals.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence saw the dispensing of new assignments for 47 officers.

General Chusak Santiworawut is slated to become chief staff officer attached to the permanent secretary for Defence.

The Armed Forces Headquarters saw the reshuffle of 20 officers. General Chayut Suwannamat is to become chief staff officer attached to the supreme commander.

The Navy saw rotations involving eight officers in the rank of vice admiral and rear admiral.

The Air Force saw a minimal change involving two officers. The two, including one

female, will be elevated from the rank of colonel to air marshal.

"The promotion is seen as ceremonial............routine in accordance with seniority"

I remember a time when promotion and all the benefits it brings was based on merit, performance or achievement.

I don't think that was in Thailand though.

Another 'reshuffle" - Move them along and up before any accountability arises. No skills required, only seniority and "the club."

Q: How many Thai generals does it take to change a light bulb?

A: How do you know about our light bulb project - you evil Cambodian spy!

Generals, a dime a dozen in Thailand. coffee1.gif

Piss one off and you'll find out. Oh, by the way how many generals are there in Thailand? That question requires a number to answer. Not another slur from a new person to Thailand.

Well over a thousand in the Army alone, if memory serves me well.

Once a General, always a General. That figure was not extracted from the halls of phantasy I think.

I'm wondering how Corporals there are in the UK Army.

What caught my eye was 8 new Admirals. Now they have one per war canoe. Have any of them ever been to sea or are they all 'canteen cowboys'?

You should avoid Sattahip. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but you are completely secure.

I seem to remember many posters on here deriding the thought that politicians have any input into military appointments. Yet here we have the same cronyism arrangements being made that are allegedly only carried out by Thaksins politicians, never the democrats of course.

Arguably when this happens in the military case the end results can be quite devastating. Until the "Class of" cronyism is stamped out or at least curbed to avoid promotion regardless of merit the dangers of a coup (aka reset button by the ignorant) are ever present.

With respect instead of the "Class of" cronyism term you used it may have been better to say ALL Cronyism should be stamped out in ALL the authorities in Thailand.

Military, Police, Politics, Government, Civil Service et al.

Then perhaps Thailand can move forward.

Thailand has one of the most overbloated officer corps of any country in the world. Generals are a dime a dozen in Thailand. So, evidently, are military titles. It's like the banking sector: "...he's the Senior Executive Assistant Vice President of Gobal Marketing and Communications Strategy...". It's f*&king meaningless.

Yes, but the OP is about military promotion so I limited myself to that.

I have read there is one general per 300 soldiers. As many soldiers are support personnel, cooks, drivers, communications, maintenance, etc this means each general probably has about 200 active troops.

This ensures that they get the privileges associated with that rank when they retire. Many Armies do this. Especially in developing countries. Seen it in the western military also get the rank do the time retire.

I have met the Air Force - Air Chief Marshall Ittaporn. Really a nice guy. He trained at Luke Air Force base in Good Year Arizona. I met him last yeae at Wat Promkunaram when he was inspecting the Thai air men at Luke.

Maybe some of the military people on here can tell us what is average generals for an army, navy and marine corps. I seem to remember 64 generals, 80,000 combat troops, 460,000 support troops in a oficerially cluster**** that I was once involved in. How many would be normal?
