Oil Workers Get Together Anywhere Special?

Gone

Recommended Posts

Hey. I know there are a lot of oil workers that spend their R&R time in Pattaya or live here full time. I am also in the onshore Oil Industry and am wondering if there is any bar or place where you guys get together to socialize etc. as I would like to meet some people who are into the same thing I'm into and possibly even meet someone who knows where to get work as I'm unemployed now too.

There used to be a bar owned by an Ozzy I believe somewhere around the Pattaya Klang & Sukhumvit area but I can't remember where or if it is even open still. A lot of tradesmen used to you there and socialize and I met some pretty good folk there years ago.

You can pm me if you like.

I'm an offshore oil worker and from my experience, most oil workers on break don't want to meet other oil workers and talk shop during their off time.

We used to have a bar here in Phuket called (inevitably) The Offshore Bar. It was frequented by those who had only recently joined the business, or, those that wanted to.

Yes nice idea but when you've been stuck offshore for 3 weeks the last thing you want to do is sit in a bar all day talking about the next trip, this would be a problem for me before I moved to Thailand,I often found my self sitting in a pub in my home town with other folks talking shop before the next trip.

In its hey day Great Yarmouth my home town was a hotbed of activity revolving around large US companies such as Brown and Root,Halliburton etc,the local pub was the place to find a job,sad to say those days are long gone.

It's much more of a closed shop and more about who you know and not what you know, the likelihood of expat oil workers In Thailand/Pattaya discussing the next big contract and offering jobs to unknown folk is a nice thought but one which is not going to happen, you might here the odd guy telling you he's getting £ 350 day rating somewhere but that's about it.Good luck in your quest for a new start,I am sure something will come long soon.

Trial ban chang. It's entire farang population seems to work in the oil industry.

sent from my Android phone

That is a bar in Ban Chang called "Trial bar"?

I never said I wanted to talk shop. lol. That's the last thing I want to do also. I have 30 years experience in the Oil/Gas & Petrol-chemical industry so Im not looking for lessons etc.

We are blue-collar workers and I find the conversation over a few frosties is a lot better then if I was to visit a Business man's bar.

I'm no novice at being social and would not walk into a bar with my CV strapped to my forhead asking "Anyone have a job for me?" however like you say it's who you know not what you know and the more people in your kind of work force then the more people you know and I have NEVER met a fellow oil worker who was not willing to help out if they can.

I have worked all over the world so also have drank in the "local" near where the jobs were and I can guarrantee you that no matter what, after 1/2 dozen wobbly pops or more, the shop talk DOES come out.

Anyways my OP was not to find a job but to find the same class of people that I am. Always have a good time in that type of atmosphere.

I've worked in O&G in Thailand for the past 10 years but I am not a drinker so I don't frequent anywhere where you might get to meet people in the offshore game. I think there was a place on Soi Post Office that was/is a meet up place for offshore workers.

Well I don't work off-shore myself. I'm onshore but the point is to meet people with the oil industry personality so to speak. There are hundreds of bars where I can talk with tourists and hundreds of bars where locals drink and just sit there talking about how much they hate Thai's and how Thailand sucks so much etc. however I used to frequent a place in Bkk called Molly Melones just off of Silom and that was the kind of crowd I likes. Tradesman who enjoy a cold one after work or a roster etc. and was easy to get a game of pool going or have some very interesting conversations with peaople who actually enjoy being here and were all just "good folk."

Averywhere I have been in the world I normally look for the "blue-collar" or "tradesman" type of watering holes as they are just better people for me.

I think the owner of Siam Girl a bar in soi6 works off shore so pop in and say Hi.

Thanks. He might be the nicest guy in the world but I wouldn't be caught dead on soi 6. That is the exact type of places I stay AWAY from here in Pattaya. Been here too long for that crap. lol

I am a offshore hand, have been for going on 40 years now for my sins - introductions over.......

I would forget Ban Chang, offshore bar never has any people in it, know some people that drink in the Camel bar, "Trial" bar is a typo - I think..

I dont go out of my way to meet up with "fellow workers" but hears what I know.

TQ 2 a lot of folks drink there especially Saturday afternoons, there's a "Offshore 44" bar on Soi Excite, where folks are supposed to meet up, I have been meaning to call in for a few years now, but have never made it, if it is still open probably your best bet for an insight, the owner was/is a ex offshore hand.

Take care & good luck....

Sounds like a great job. I'm assuming a small under-the-table bribe would be required to get that sort of gig?

How weird. Kind of like saying I'm a fork lift driver is there a bar where fork lift drivers hang out.

My criteria for a bar is some where that offers ambiance, music, service with friendly staff, clean toilet near by, temp of beer, location, perv, chat with mates and good for people watching. I'm never interested in the clientele.

No. Your info is well appreciated but it's like I said, I am not looking for a job so to meet 1 guy that owns a bar on soi 6 that works off-shore is just not what I am looking for.

Any bar I go into I never really hang out with the owner but the clientel and I just cannot stand soi 6.

I think a lot of you are missing my point. I should have been more clear maybe. I don't care if they are off-shore or on-shore workers or local pipe-fitters.

What I was saying really because not to many farangs are working directly in Thailand in the trades but mostly in other countries but are stationing themselves here.

When I worked in Mapthaput for over a year there was that German Restaurant close bye that most farangs would eat at for lunch and was a good crowd however it was a restaurant and not a bar and most likely after work hours noone went there. Most of the guys I meat were here working on an expat package so they were put up in Rayong or ban chang. Only a few chose Pattaya.

I guess there is no place like Molley Mallones in Bkk where the working class gets together after work to shoot some pool, socialize over a few wobbly pops etc. but I was just asking.

People say "Why would a forklift driver want to hang out with other forklift drivers after work?"

You are just not getting my point. Like I say, many bars here have clientel that I am just not interested in having beers with because all they do is talk down about Thailand and whine, complain about everything because they just simply have no life. Nothing else to talk about.

Tourists are here doing touristy things and wanna hang out with bar girls etc. and that's cool but just not for me.

Many posters here that replied know what I'm talking about and have provided some decent info but the others just want to be sarcastic and snobby. Those are the people I don't want to drink beer with actually.

Normally when I work abroad in some countries there is always a 'Biker Bar" with strippers and pool tables and the working class crowd enjoying some drinks, pool and having a blast. That's the kind of place that suits me. Then there are "sports bars" etc. and thats the kind of places that I'm not interested in.

Anyways I think if I actually lived in Ban Chang it would be cool to check those places out and I might go for a ride on a Friday or Saturday eve to check them out weather there are people there or not. I have no problems striking up a conversation or getting a game of pool going no matter where I am. lol

PS: As an observation it seems that a lot of on/off-shore guys seem to like to settle in Ban Chang more then Pattaya. Smart move really.

I work onshore oil & gas in P.N.G. & stay in Pattaya on R&R , I've met many guys who work in a similar job at Rhompo market in Jomtien , there are also a lot of retirees (former oil workers) who hang out there these days.

As I work for contractor company in the service industry I don't get as much money or as much time off as most of the others but it's still OK to socialise with hands on blue collar types. I'm not in to the gogo bars as much as before,I much prefer relaxed bars a few games of pool and a yarn with whoever is on R&R at the time, it's a pleasant way to spend the evenings.

You joined in the New year and you already are nearly up to one thousand posts.A job is a good idea i think.

Why would you think about when a person joined and how many posts they have made? This for instance is your first post (maybe after being banned for being a troll) and this is your input?

What/where is Rompho market? I agree with you 100% about a relaxing place to knock a few back and play some pool etc.

Rompo market and the bars next to it are along from the hanuman statue on the new Jomtien second road opposite the east end of soi 5.

Aha yes that's where I thought you meant. Yes I actually like that place and the pool tables in the back etc. Thanks for the reply mate. If there wasn't lightning and thunder right now I would probably head down there tonight as you reminded me.

I get it if they don't. I recently moved from BKK so was looking for something similar, I have a couple of mates here that i can meet up for a beer with. One place he likes is the Roo Bar on walking St. That's a blokes place, but I can't be doing with walking st too often. We have started drinking at Rompo Market, it's a nice place for a beer, no point in either of us hanging around gogo bars as we are married and don't fancy having our parts cut off. The thing is, you don't really just sidle up to farangs in a bar and start talking to them so it is a good idea asking on here.

Thank you very much and what a great and decent offer however I have had my own transportation for 11 years now mate but hey I'm into meeting up for a cold beer on a hot day if you want?

Funny thing is most people reading this seem to think I'm into OFF-SHORE and I know that when they see my posts as ON-SHORE it is quite easily mistaken but thats not the point really haha. Just tradesman, blue collar workers really retired or not are always good folk.

I'm a Pipe Fitter by trade but have worked my way up the ladder over the years and got my Engineering degree 13 years ago but still a fitter at heart. That's why the first thing I ask for when I show up on a job is for a set of coveralls to let them know I will be spending as little time in the office as possable. drunk.gif

Nothing wrong with Pattaya Soi 6 where there's several bars that are pretty active meeting points for like-minded oilfield trash. Just because your favourite pub is next to the butchers shop doesn't mean you have to pop in and buy some sausages every time you go the pub does it? Ban Chang's 'offshore' meeting places are similary scattered between some less... businesslike establishments but that's a bit of a drive just to be shooting pool and bullsh!tting with the workers.

The TQ2 doesn't exist any more but the original TQ on Beach Road still has some of the oldest working (or retired and still drinking) oilfield hands regularly killing the arse-end of the afternoon there. Not too many in the evenings though. Yes it's a gogo bar and no pool table but the music tends to be as dated as the clientelle and the day-shift, foot-shufflers aren't pushy and easy on the eye while you ponder the job offers.

PS. You should have thought of a more apt topic title if you aren't looking exclusively for oil patch people, wet or dry! The mods can change the title for you if all these oilfield punters are getting on your tits.
