Hey everyone,

I've been down here for eight months, everyday I've enten spicy food, some days more than others.

Some mornings, I got bad stomach ache when I wake up and need to visit the bathroom a fem times.

In the start I thought my stomach needed to get used to it, but now I start to wonder...

A friend told me to drink milk or eat icecream/yoghurt after the meal, and that helps, but I would like to avoid that after every single meal...

Hope anyone got some wise words,

Best regards,

Emil

Hi Emil,

Get used to it. Everyone gets 'the scours' now and then here.

Not sure about the advise regarding milk etc. If you have a bit of an irritable bowel anyway you possibly won't tolerate the sugars in most dairy ie. lactose. It might upset your tummy more. This sugar takes a bit of work by the bowel and an often lacking enzyme which breaks it down called lactase. Careful on the dairy. Try it in a bit of a controlled environment and assess yourself or it's a very easy test to have done by a medical facility.

Be sensible about what you eat. The spiciness alone should be acquirable. Sounds like you're cool with it already(sorry). Other problems you will never tolerate. Seen the locals swim in the khlongs off Chao Phraya? We'd be dead sure.

If food or preparation don't look up to scratch don't dine.

Look for busy places - restaurants and shops/markets - high turnover.

WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE EATING. Think about who else has touched that coin or the back of the chair you just pulled out.

If the taste or texture of something seems maybe wrong trust your instinct and don't have a 2nd taste. If a prawn seems 90% good that's bad.

Don't be a hero and attempt to eat everything that others do. Particularly in rural areas.

Do drink too much water during a meal. A Thai always seems to have a big glassful at the end of the feast.

It'll still happen. Keep some proper electrolyte sachets for when it does. The sports type drinks are not adequate. You'll get over it quicker with these. Google the science and enjoy the gastronomic journey.

My own idea is to adopt a little Burmese orphan as a food taster.

ye got to identify the problem; do you have acid indigestion or a real stomach ache? if the latter I would quit the spicy food altogether and see a doctor...papaya helps in some cases...

bowel movements can be a problem later as the oil from chile peppers is not digestible and can set yer arsehol_e aflame on exit but that is usually predictable...

A couple of remedies that work. 1. eat a tablespoon of PLAIN boiled rice, followed a lomotil tablet. the brand they seem to use here is called "Loramide", available over the counter at any pharmacy. wirks very well

Thanks for the answers, much appreciated. When it's possible for Thai's to eat the dishes, it's possible for me too :)

It's not like I'm in loads of pain, I just need to visit the bathroom two times within' 15 minuts, then it's over.

Again, thanks.

What works for me is Charcoal tablets, available form Boots or Watsons for about 65 baht.

See a doctor. Asking for medical advice online is a complete waste of time.

great idea ....then he will get 1/2 kilo of pills including antibiotics and antacids....guaranteed to give him the squitters....

Stomach upset and Hershy squirts are a fact of life here ..even the Thais get it...lots of remedies in liquid and powder form out there some work even...they say you should avoid dairy product with the squitters.

Of course if OTC remedies do not work within a short time you should see a doc and he or she will be more than happy to insert 1/2 metre 'scope into your land of darkness to check for Colitis or other horrid things

Charcoal tablets or also known as carbon in some pharmacies help with absorbing the spice so it doesn't affect you gut so much afterwards. They also help absorb anything bad in your stomach and prevents the sickly feeling if you have food poisoning or are hungover. :)

<deleted>? I've been going to <good> Thai doctors for 20+ years and have never been given "1/2 kilo of pills". Having a sore stomach in the morning is not normal and you have no clue whatsoever as to what is causing it.

If you have a persistent problem, see a doctor.

Hi. I get this problem and I have worked out it is only when the chili used in the food is of the dried type rather than fresh, think it is where it takes longer to digest and therefor irritates the gut and or stomach.

See if you can work out if when you get it if you have had food with fresh or dried chilly in it.

Might be just my intolerance but worth a try.

some foods just do me in. i know what will happen before i eat them, but eat them anyways.

there is a place nearby that does laab moo tod. now this is perhaps one of the most delicious things i have ever tasted, but i know within hours of eating it i will suffer.

i still eat it at least once a month.

reckon the dried it is the dried chilies too.

if you think thais dont get the shits, you have never lived with one.

Yes for me this is it exactly. The dried chilis in powder form. I love em and I can eat spoon fulls on my food, especially pizza and baa mee. But I pay a predictable price for it - with stomach cramps and a ring of fire in the morning. w00t.gif

i get it exactly the same. eating the spicy food is no problem whatsoever but then the next morning i get this incredible pain down there and almost start sweating. i have to sit down and then it usually goes away after 5 minutes. also makes me wanna go to the toilet as well which tends to releive it.

it seems to me that its just the feeling of the spicy food moving through your bowel.

its a crap feeling though. just dont eat your food so spicy

thumbsup.gif I thought I posted a reply to this topic before....but maybe it didn't post properly.

Anyhow, my Thai wife had a very similar problem some years ago when I first met her.

When I finally got her to go to the doctor, it turned out she had a stomach ulcer.

An relatively simple operation to remove that ulcer solved her problem. It never re-occured.

Areas like that, basically what a layman woud call "Ulcers", can occur in the stomach and the intestinal tract.

The spicey food you eat causes pain, inflamation, and such problems as it passes through your stomach and intestines.

So based on that experience, I recommend you have a check made by a doctor for that possibility.

Might not be your problem, but it worked for my Thai wife.

It won't hurt for you to check anyhow.

I had this problem too when I first came to Thailand. After a few months it went away. If I feel it moving through my large intestine I go to the toilet immediately and use the sprayer as a b day and it goes away quickly. 8 months is a long time though". Try to eat plain rice before you eat the spicy stuff. Also happens if I eat soup ESP Tom yum without eating any rice.

Get yourself "Smecta" from most pharmacy's something like 10 baht-15 baht per satchel

Works wonders for pain, runs and anything else stomach related smile.png

Spicey food is way past my stomach next morning. My wife's larb has me almost believing in a god, when I'm sat on the bog.

If it's a continuous thing, regardless of medication then you are the same as me laugh.png . Leave the hot stuff alone. More bread and potatoes. thumbsup.gif

We likes the taste precious, yes we does.

Yep larb is one of those things, powerfully tasty going in, then powerfully uncomfortable on the way out.

by the way you should try it as a pizza topping, it is fantastic.

Hope you mean what goes in, not the end product...
