I'm no expert, but isn't warning people in the Gulf of Thailand just generating unnecessary panic? They have just been talking about Pak Phanang in Nakhon Sri Thammerat.

Now I am confused.

Is it all clear and over or?

I would simply assume the worst and stay on high ground until maybe 930 pm local time. There have been 10 aftershocks up to this point (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/), the 8.2 being the worst occurred about 2 hours and 15 minutes after the initial 8.6. Just wait it out on high ground.

Regarding busy/jammed cellular/mobile networks during an emergency, I have read that it is best to try and contact loved ones by text messages rather than voice calls. Easier to get through.

hopefully it could be that the longer it draws out the less chance. BUT if you holiday in those areas-OR live, you are gambling more than normal, If I resided in the areas I would be on high ground, as who knows when the next one will be, BBC world has said all still to be on alert, until a time when it is classed as being safer.

Edit: Indonesia is alledgly out of the woods, according to this latest report, and hence everywhere else.

Be vigilant, but it's your choice. I do think the worst is over, when reading many various sites.

Enjoy your meal.

ThaiPBS is interviewing (live at 19:41) Prof. Pennung Warnitchai, seismologist at AIT:

"We strongly advise people to stay at higher ground until 21:30 as situation is not clear due to aftershocks and more waves could arrive, too early to predict right now".

The sirens in Phuket/elsewhere are actually sounding?

*Sigh* ... no need to be condescending. The tsunami warning system in Thailand is one of the most advanced in the region.

If they had 'panicked' in 2004 lives would have been saved.

My mate would rather be on the roof of his hotel (where he is now) under a 'false alarm, than under 3 metres of water floating out to Jakarta !

Nobody can criticise anyone who went through the trauma of 2004 of over-reaction (if that is what it turns out to be) - life is too precious

Agree with you 100% I experienced 2004. Today brought back those vivid memories.

ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL

AUTHORITIES.

from Malaysia (The Star) the informations are height of the tsunami 17cm from one source and 30 cm on another source (Measured at sea not nearby the coast where the phenomenom is amplified) So it seems not so powerful....

Stay alert and in a safe location on higher ground away from the Ocean and Beaches for a while until the Seismic Activity (Major Earthquakes)subsides.

Better to take safety adn have nothing happen than not prepared like in 2004.
