TAK, May 2 – Thai nationals are advised against crossing the Myanmar border at Tak's Phop Phra district as their safety is uncertain after the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) threatened to retaliate unless the Thai authorities removes its leader's name from Thailand's list of drug traffickers, the Tak governor said on Wednesday.

Governor Suriya Prasartbundit made his warning after the DKBA earlier issued a statement defending its commander-in-chief General Saw Ler Pwe, commonly known as Na Khan Mwe, who was listed by the Thai Narcotics Control Board on its list of 25 most-wanted drug traffickers.

In response to the latest DKBA move, Gov Suriya said he instructed authorities in Phop Phra district to warn residents on the Thai-Myanmar border--especially in four villages located just opposite DKBA-influenced areas--not to cross the boundary.

The governor said the warning came as Gen Saw Ler Pwe barred Thai residents and traders from entering its areas and that their safety could not be guaranteed.

A Thai News Agency reporter said that situation along the Thai-Myanmar border was normal this morning with some Karen and Myanmar residents continuing to cross the border to buy some goods in Thai territory amid tight security provided by Thai troops.

Karen News earlier quoted DKBA spokesman Capt Saw Ko Myo as saying that General Saw Ler Pwe was furious with the allegations of the Thai government.

He said the "accusations hurt not only the personal image of DKBA leader, but also smeared the DKBA and Burma."

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung is invited to investigate at any of the DKBA bases and they are willing to go to any court or stand trial if they are found guilty, the DKBA statement said.

"If the Thai government does not solve the problem to our satisfaction, we will sue it according to international law," the statement said. (MCOT online news)

Good luck! The hub of darkness is good at not following international law. :)

Does the DKBA have authority to sue in International Court?

Thailand warns of 'threats' by alleged Karen drug lord

BANGKOK, May 2, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand has warned the population of a border area with Myanmar after "threats" by the leader of a Burmese ethnic rebel group who was recently included in a list of most wanted drug dealers by Bangkok.

The Thai government last week released the list of 25 names, including the leader of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) known as Na Kham Mwe.

In response Na Kham Mwe allegedly issued a "threat" to Thais living in the Tak province which has a porous border with neighbouring Myanmar, the provincial governor told AFP.

"I have issued this warning to residents living near the border with Myanmar in the districts of Phobpra and Umphang, telling them to be careful when crossing the border... after a threat of violence by Na Kham Mwe," said governor Suriya Prasartbandit.

"I have asked military and police to be on alert on the border but we have not increased forces (there). So far, the situation is normal."

In late 2010 and early 2011 fierce fighting between the DKBA and Myanmar's army pushed some 20,000 refugees across the border into Thailand.

According to the website of the exiled Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), the group was angry with Thai authorities after they implicated its leader in drug running, demanding evidence of his alleged crimes.

Thai deputy prime minister Chalerm Yubamrung however said Wednesday that an arrest warrant was issued against him as early as 2003.

It was impossible to find this so called list of top 25 drug traffickers by the Thai Narcotics Control Board. http://en.oncb.go.th/file/narcotics.html

Does this list of top 25 really exist? I assume that the Thai Tak governor saw the list and disclosed it to the DKBA so it must be public information because he disclosed it. The DKBA then threatened reprisal. Wouldn't the threat of reprisal constitute an act of terrorist threat? Would foreign tourists crossing this border point from Thailand have a risk exposure? Kidnapping, murder,..etc.? What is really going on withing this area of Tak and with the DKBA. It would be helpful if the newspaper did an investigative journalism project on this and the "list." Tom determine in good faith what this serious situation is.

The newspaper should be called in to question for just merely posting a story like this without proper due diligence. Has the newspaper ever seen this top 25 list? Why can't we see this list and why don't they report in much more detail about the activities of the DKBA? What is the Thai government's position on the DKBA and its leader who is on the list, according to the Thai governor of Tak?

Are the Karen connected to the Junta? I thought they were a hill tribe.

The Karen hill tribe is rather fractured... DKBA is at odds with the KNU, and appears more corrupt. The KNU accuses them of working with the junta. I've talked Karens in the area. Most of them are more afraid of DKBA than of the Burmese army, as stories of abuse and atrocities by DKBA against other Karen abound.

The Karen appear to split between different political affiliations and beliefs, I know of one group which is christian and has been for a long time, this group does have a military wing but they are more interested in negotiation with the Junta than confrontation, in order to get to this group a military escort is required, some people who go unescorted sometimes end up dead at the hands of the group mentioned in the news story.

I saw the list with photos on one of the Thai news channels. So before you get in a uproar it was in the local news. I think you are reading into this story way more than is needed.

So they want to clear and protect their good name by attacking and killing innocent people solely because of the country on their passport? Makes a lot of sense to me. I am sure the Thai people making land crossings in this area have very high standing in the government and have a lot of control over who is on a 'most wanted' list.

Does anyone really care if the DKBA is involved in trafficking?? Between the Junta and the sanctions, I am sure their options for making money are quite limited, they would be crazy not to get involved if they could get away with it.

Get a hold of the CIA and ask if they know anything about this...cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif Or maybe even the Secret Service...The CIA has a definitive history here...

Agreed...This whole situation and article needs a tad more clarification and "transparency"...In the least...This to me is quite serious...

Right.....So was 9/11...

Sounds like the Thais are raising the bar. It will cost more at the border for all goods to cross and the Thais are making points pretending to do something to combat the 'pill industry' while cashing in.

wai.gif agreed...But it could get ugly and I really hope not. It all sounds so nasty to be frank. Hope I didn't offend anyone by adding a bit of levity...
