BANGKOK: - Sumet Phomanee, chairman of Airports of Thailand Plc, yesterday denied that brutal measures were taken against the red-shirt group at Suvarnabhumi Airport even though he regarded that they were involved in the illegal collection of extra parking fees.

On Monday the group rallied in front of Pheu Thai Party headquarters to ask MPs for help. They accused airport authorities of threatening them.

Sumet said that according to Parking Management Co's concession, the firm only had the right to keep parking fees collected from arriving vehicles, but they were also keeping extra parking fees collected on the fifth floor of the parking building.

"The airport has already told them that they are breaking the law but they still ignore our warning so we have to sue them," he said.

The red shirts' involvement was not a worry and Pheu Thai has nothing to do with this case. It's not a Pheu Thai problem.

"I don't want to blame the fee collectors but whoever hired them has to take responsibility. I have to arrest them because this is a mafia activity. I also insist that there is no outlawed measure applied to them." he added.

Transport Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan said he agreed with Sumet about arresting the illegal fee collectors.

He also insisted that even though the red shirts are involved, they have to face justice because no one is above the law.

These politically-motivated charges of illegally collecting parking fees will be exonerated by the amnesty bill passing in Parliament.

If I parked like 5 days, they will try to give me tickets/receipts for say 2 or 3 days (each have a value of 250 baht incl.tax). I always count, and ask for the missing tickets. Sometimes I have to ask twice to get the correct amount. This stupid system encourages corruption!

The last time I parked, I saw the mafia at the 5th floor. The block certain spots, naming them VIP spots. They have a system with a 2nd parking ticket, with an unannounced price.

This all started a year and a half year before the airport when Red Shirts injured hundreds in their Bangkok riot.

That was the start of violence of any color.

p.s. the Red Shirts responsible are still awaiting adjudication on those charges.

I think you forget how this all started. We could go back to early 2006 when Thaksin changed the law so he could sell his company to the Singaporeans, or even back to 2001 when Thaksin made an "honest mistake".

It all started back in 2001 when Thaksin thumbed his nose at the court, decided he was above the law, and bribed and blackmailed judges to get off. Once he had successfully rendered the courts impotent, he set about eviscerating the rest of the democratic institutions of the country, and the rest is history. The yellow shirts and the coup were simply a reaction to this blatant criminal behavior and injustice.

How it all started. It was all so long ago it's getting fuzzy now. Wasn't it all something to do with some rich bloke from up north who was stealing everything, putting his family in various positions of power? Then some other mob, who didn't like this as they were not the ones stealing everything for once, kicked up a fuss and stared cooing. Red or Yellow, if they break the law lock em up. This typical Thai farce at the countries main international airport is so embarrassing yet none of the so called 'leaders' are doing anything. How any nation can allow any part of it's main international airport to be controlled by local mafia's is beyond me, as was the Yellow invasion. These things could simply not happen in the vast majority of countries.
