MRnell
I plan to be in BKK soon , I am trying to find some new places to eat hoping someone can tell me some hidden treasures, like the best roast duck you ever had or a noodle soup , or down some little lane way the sells the best hands down spicy pork sausages ,
moradave
I love the roast duck at MK restaurant. http://www.mkrestaurant.com/ You will find one at almost every Lotus/Tesco or Big C market. The price is about 120 b for a large serving. That plus a bowl of their self cooking hot pot soup makes a wonderful meal in a pleasant surrounding at a low price. Try their rum raisin ice cream for desert. Aroy.

draftvader
Great duck and rice is on Nakhon Chai Si, Dusit. Map Between Samsen and Soi Si Yan 3 on the left. Muslim run place with tiled floor, air-conditioning and wooden tables. The other food is pretty good too. --Edit-- This Forum tool blocks iframes so I couldn't embed the map. phuturatica
Samsen soi 2 in Banglamphu (near Khao San) have an excellent little street food restaurant which does excellent duck meals. It's opposite the 7Eleven and the tables are outside and inside. It's not a fancy restaurant, however the quality of food there is decent and the price won't hurt your wallet either. brit1984
I think the OP was just using duck as an example; our suggestions don't need to be for duck I forgot to mention my wife's favourite place.. The Oyster Bar
tommytouch
Why not experiment with regional cuisine? It seems quite strange to me that regardless of which part of Thailand you're in it's often relatively hard to find places specialising in food originating from that particular area, with Isaan being the exception in my experience. For Northern Thai try Gedhawa (actually the only Northern restaurant I know in Bangkok), Sukhumvit 35 (right hand side, quite far down). Great food and a very charming place too. For Southern (spicy) Phuket Town on the corner of Thonglor soi 6 is good. Also a charming little place. As for Isaan food (North East) I've heard good things about Sabai Jai Gai Yang on Ekamai soi 1 but have yet to try it. You mentioned noodle soup and if you haven't done already I also recommend trying boat noodles (kuay tiew rua). Delicious. The Victory Monument area is well known for this dish or there's a chain called Kuay Tiew Rua Thasiam with locations in places such as Central World, MBK, Siam Center and Siam Square soi 10, although I've never been. Good luck. http://bk.asia-city.com/restaurants/bangkok-restaurant-reviews/gedhawa http://bk.asia-city.com/restaurants/bangkok-restaurant-reviews/phuket-town http://bk.asia-city.com/restaurants/bangkok-restaurant-reviews/sabaijai-kebtawan http://latztravelandfoods.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/spicy-boat-noodles-at-bangkoks-victory-monument/
IMA_FARANG
Haven't been there in some years but for street vendor's food...."Monkey ball soup" as we used to call it....Sukhumvit Soi 38 was well known as you could tell then by the number of Mercedes parked there owned by hi-so Thails eating there at night, Note: "Monkey ball soup" is actually a spicy soup with noodles and fish balls....nothing to do with Monkeys. smileplur
I have been a big fan of noodle soup for a long time. I sample it everywhere. Far and away the best I have ever had is shockingly close to my house. I guess I got pretty luck in that regard. He is so popular that I know of people making a 30-45 minute journey for a bowl of his soup under a dodgy roof on a small soi. Once he opens, customers fill the place, and he will sell out within 2 hours, so there is a limited window of time to get there and get your soup! He is on On Nut Soi 24 almost directly halfway between On Nut Road and Sukhumvit Soi 93 (the road is a cut through between the two). It's a bit out of the way, but worth a stop if you are anywhere nearby. He sells one thing and one thing only: Chicken Noodle Soup. He seems to have mastered the art. If it is your birthday, your noodle soup is free. Unfortunately, I always seem to oversleep and miss it on my birthday. My girlfriend has had the same problem for the last two years! Not that 25 baht is going to break the bank. I get double white meat chicken, so mine is 35 baht, but to each their own. As for duck, I am not a big fan myself. However, I have friends who love duck. Although not the cheapest around, they swear by 'Duck 2 ways' at http://www.monsoonbangkok.com/ located on Sukhumvit Soi 8. The ambiance is nice and the beer isn't too expensive. Fried Chicken is another one of those things that I cannot seem to live without. Again, I have sampled stalls all over the city. My favorite is at Bang Jack Station. There is a market on the odd numbered side of the street. The second guy on the left selling southern style fried chicken is simply awesome. I ate it for a month daily before I decided to limit myself to once a week because it certainly isn't good for you. It sure beats anything else I have found. My girlfriend is a big fan of Sukiyaki. The best she has found is on On Nut Road around Soi 19 at a restaurant formerly known as Eat Good. Now, it is under new ownership and has the name of Simply D. It is opposite the Caltex station. I guess you can figure out what part of town I live in!!! That being said, I eat mostly western food, as I have grown tired of Thai food. I am still looking for a place that does excellent Pad kapao moo. It can be very hit or miss. I haven't found that outstanding place yet. Anyone have a favorite stall or restaurant for this dish? GF132
Try this old school noodle called kiam ee เกี๋ยมอี๋ in soi Charoen krung 23, china town area. It is very close to wat mangkorn (dragon temple) the most important Chinese temple in Thailand. When you are in soi 23, it is the second stall to your right. I repeat it's the second shop not the first! http://www.pg.in.th/blog/view/7223 It is one of the tastiest place for kiamee. Make sure you add their special chili sauce! This place opens for lunch only Enjoy BKK!
healthcaretaker
I am about to start this thread but you did it first. I am taking some foreigners to Bangkok and looking for the best local food is top of our itinerary, shopping comes only 2nd. We have all been to BKK before but hardly know where to get the best local food; like places for Roast Pork Rice, Roast pork with pork ingredients soup, Lad Kraprow, tom yam, etc. I know these are good(OP, attention !!) a) During lunch hrs, the stew pork rice at the junction of Silom and Soi Convent is popular but just a stall; going in a group will have seats difficulty. Chinatown's Fish Ball soup(2 stalls side by side same owner, opens only at 10 pm till 4am) at the main road is very nice, escpecially the slices of fish paste meat; c) Pork ingredients with roast port shop - 2 stalls along Chinatown but at the other road running the opposite direction, I stall at the main road side as you come out of Shangri-La hotel( a little costly). I heard a chicken rice near Emporium shopping mall is nice but don't know exactly where, can someone help ? Can anyone endorse or second my recommendations above ? GF132
This place is one of the best for this kind of noodles but if you don't like kiam ee, you might not like it. So far it's the tastiest of its kind for me. Try shrimp wanton soup on Rama 4 called Sawang noodle shop. http://bangkok101.com/2011/10/street-eat-sawang/ Their soup is very tasty. But again simple but comforting Try this old school noodle called kiam ee เกี๋ยมอี๋ in soi Charoen krung 23, china town area. Is it in air-cond ? 2nd one - Good location, may try it out. 3rd one - A little out of the way. 4th one - sounds good and look authentic but is this place near to any attraction, how far from any BTS ? That google map is in Thai and small, how can I find it in google map ? If I call to reserve, can they speak English ? Thanks again. I always see alot of people eating by the roadside, outside near Central World bridge before crossing to Pratunam. A few stalls sell the same type of large fish covered with salt with other food. Is it good there ? Why so many people eat there despite the uncomfortable crowded environmement ? I am tempted to try.
