Hi,

anybody of you guys has the new True HIghspeed Internet by cable alöready installed?

Im just curious how it works in terms of speed (single connection) and reliability.

Im thinking of changing from Tot Fibre2U,which is fine but for 12/2 1500,- a month.

True is offering 20/2 for 1300,-.

Would your comments really appreciate,i would like to stream tv from europe so would need a stable

2mbit single connection!

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Only problem is they throttle single threads to around 2Mb. I can get full 20Mb on multi threaded applications but not on single thread. I also find connections to US faster than to EU generally.

Not sure you'll find any difference between TOT and True for the streaming, other than a saving of a few baht. Also note True is 1299 + 7% vat.

thanks mate for the info, yes i know they are throtteling, was just wondering if anybody use this their service.actually this sounds pretty much the same as my fibre2u,as i said its not too bad,im streaming sky channels from germany an have to different sites for that.one is working fine, the other one has laggs from time to time.i think i should stay with tot, never change a running system and here in thailand you will never be sure what you get afterwrads.may i ask you in which area do you live?im in mae nam...thanks mate, greets kai

Hi -

I was on the point of changing to a cable system with TOT - on the belief that this would be loads faster than my current 6Mbit TOT line.

Most of the time this is fine, but at certain periods in the day my pipe seems crowded. Usually I can download files at 5-6 Mbits. Bad periods it's off and on at a crawl.

Put me straight please - explain throttling? The only reason I'd be changing is that is simply assumed that a cable connection would be subject to restrictions.

Tell me about the TOT throttling and what this means in practice . . .

so was too late...but you signed already ;-)

would you mind to give some feedback about speeds when you got your cable internet???

thx kai

regarding the throtteling, thai isps seems to throttle the speed of their lines when it comes to international connections.but this seems to be much less the last year, since you now can get uo to 8mbit on certain times on a single connection.im using the optical internet (fibre2u) and i have to say its not too bad...def better than you with dsl and there are nearly no cut outs...so just go for the fibre (tot) or cable (true)...

cheers kai

I'm currently using DSL with 3BB and they do throttle the connection. I notice around after 6 PM till midnight, the international speed will usually crawl. Torrents as well as rapidshare/hotfile etc will get less than 100KB/s per connection. So the trick is to download many at the same time.

I signed up for the 20/2 because I need faster upload speeds.

I usually upload stuff to youtube and also to my seedbox in Luxembourg and Bangkok.

Will report on the speed when it's installed.

Throttling........ quite easy concept..........

If 1,000,000 subscribers (bearing in mind Thailand has more), have a 20MB/s link, which is a dedicated service to the US, the Thai to US truck would be:-

20,000,000MB/s = 19,531 GB/s = 19 TB/s

I am not sure the total trunk capacity of Thailand, but i can guarantee you its maybe in the 100's GB range,

If you have seen the cost of a E1, you would realize you would need to pay maybe 20,000 or 40,000 baht/month or more a month for this dedicated service.

As such, it works on probability of use, and generally puts priority on certain services i.e. email, facebook, youtube etc. My understanding is i.e. heavy downloaders ( i.e. my newphew is 24/7 downloading big movie files ) might be throttled down during peak use hours, and be unthrottled during off peak hours......

Now add another dedicated trunk to Europe......... you can see its just not economically feasible.

Local internet would not be throttled as the cost of local connectivity is alot less. Thats why for example Google puts a service in Singapore ( or malaysia - i forgot ), so that if you search or download movies, your pulling it over a less costly (and thus faster ) trunk. If you were in the US, connecting to a US server, i am not sure, but you probably would not be throttled.

If a local operator is not distributing their bandwith properly, everyones internet connection would grind to a halt (my friend upcountry had TTnT and then TOT many years back, and they got dial up speed during peaks ).

As such, throttling benefits the normal user (mass)

just having very slow connection this weekend again on tot fibre 2u 12/2.

thought it was just yesterday evening for the cl final but today (sunday morning) same thing, cant stream sd from europe which needs about 1mbit single connection.

these streams worked perfect the last months/weeks...

anybody having the same?im always worried that they gonna throttle the fibre option more and more now since more people sign up for this!

@mole:

would really appreciate if yopu could post your results if you are "connected"!

thanks mate!!

Any particular site you'd like me to test from?

I can check it out with my current 3BB DSL so I can see if there's any difference.

Does anyone have a link to an English language page for true online, so I can check out all the other bits and pieces offered on their brochure that I have?

So mole have you had the cable put in yet?I'm thinking of getting it,but i am 500m from the road they told me one of there guys could come to have a look, they said pay 500b and have to sign a contract for 1 year, sounds ok.

Anyone got one of these?http://www3.truecorp.co.th/trueonline/product/detail/61/Mi_Fi

Seems like a good thing to have and can share the internet connection to up to 5 computers, maybe this is the way to go as i get 3g at my house and is a good reception.and no need to get a cable brought up to the house.

I have the standard dongle, not the mi-fi. Works perfectly in Lamai, more reliable than either 3bb or ToT landline connections. 800 baht/month for unlimited downloads.

3g is by far a lot less reliable than adsl and after 3 or 5 giz of download , speed is capped at 384 kilobits per second wich is 20 times slower than the basic adsl.

Still waiting for it to be installed...

hi mole,at least there tot was faster ;-) took them 5 days (incl. weekend) to install fibre2u.

waiting for your results...anyway thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Playing online is laggy but sometimes is playable I was using 3bb premium but that is utter crap atm for gaming, i am now using True home inet (20mb/2mb) and its better but still not great.

Maybe in theory 3g is less reliable. In practice my true 3g has not dropped connection in 2 months, whereas my 3bb wireless connection is unusable 1 day in 3 on average.

True 3G is very reliable if you got signal, and certainly more reliable than 3bb in my experience. A bit late now that you've ordered it, but the coffee shop near the university has recently switched to true broadband and it is barely usable on many sites, i end up connecting via my phone instead (strange as you would think true 3g would be similar to true cable)

Just have it installed, and yes, it is 20/2 but only for Thai sites, not for international sites.

3BB 5/1 loads without a problem all of my pages, True Online internet loads about one or two pages, that's it.

My advice, stay clear of it.

Am trying to cancel right now, the technician is still here, my wife on the phone, all of a sudden the salespeople don't speak English.

It's finally installed and working.

Torrenting is fast and I get up to 2.5 MB/s from Thai trackers receiving mostly from Thai peers.

Their international speed is however quite poor. When torrenting from uknova, which is mostly international peers, I consistently max out my 3BB dsl at 1 MB/s.

With true, I'm getting like 100-200 KB/s!!

Uploading to my seedbox in luxembourg is also fast and I get full 200+ KB/s.

To my Thai seedbox, I get 270 KB/s upload.

Rapidshare premium: 150-170

jumbofiles: 5-6

filefactory premium: 200-250

bitshare premium: 200-250

megashares premium: 200

OK, stupid me, I forgot to forward port to my azureus. Now torrenting is faster. But not quite.

With 3BB, I only needed to connect with max 32 peers and I'd get max 1 MB/s.

Now with 64 peers, I only get 250-300 KB/s.

I'm getting less than 10KB/s from any international peers. This is quite poor actually.

The only thing True cable is good at is if you get stuff from Thailand, then you'll be able to max out your connection.

Hopefully it'll improve with time.

But I'm mostly uploading stuff to my seedboxes and youtube, so the increased upload speed is a big plus for me.
