Government urged to release facts about Rayong industrial estate accidents

BANGKOK, May 15 --- The Eastern People’s Network submitted a petition today demanding that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and relevant government agencies transparently release all information related to the two industrial estate chemical accidents at two factories in the eastern province of Rayong and to resolve the problems quickly.

Eastern People's Network coordinator Suthi Atchasai led civil society group members to Government House and then presented the petition to the premier, industry minister, and interior minister via Pol Maj-Gen Thawat Boonfueng, acting secretary general of the PM’s Office.

The civil society network demanded that government and related agencies transparently disclose all information about the explosion and resultant fire at the Bangkok Synthetics Co (BST) petrochemicals factory at Map Ta Phut on May 5 which killed 12 people and the May 6 toxic gas leak at the Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) factory in the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate to the public, citing that a number of victims lost their lives and that others were injured in the two accidents.

In addition, the civil group urged the government and the factories to apply and strictly enforce the National Plan on Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation 2010-2014 (BE 2553-2557), which provides comprehensive compensation for those affected. They called on the government to take legal action against the agencies for negligence of duty.

The network also called for proper town planning management, building a buffer zone between industrial zone and residential area, the inventory of hazardous materials in possession and pollution ventilation. The release of relevant information to the public and local health offices is necessary, the group said, in order to reduce and alleviate the possible impacts on communities, health, assets and environment.

The Eastern People's Network then submitted a petition to Surachai Liengboonlertchai, chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Environment at Parliament.

Mr Surachai said that the committee would visit the affected areas in Rayong tomorrow for first-hand information from local residents. The committee will invite related agencies to give further information. (MCOT online news)

You could give the 'local' population details of every chemical used there and I doubt if there is 1% that would know what they were or how danerous they were. Many of the so called 'locals' moved in only after the factories were built hoping to make money from them, food stalls etc.

Life goes on as usual now, and will be in the next 1,000 years.
