Hello there,

I will be moving to Bkk in August, initially for a year or so. I've been there before but never for more than 3 months at the time, so I have a few questions that I hope you can help me answer:

1- Can I get an Italian coffee maker in Bkk? Not the espresso kind though, but the traditional type. How much are they on average? I'm thinking of packing mine but I'd like to save space and weight if I can buy one there at a reasonable price.

2- Where can I buy Lao coffee (ground)?

3- I read the chickpea post on this forum, but it seemed to be a bit dated. Can I buy dry lentils and chickpeas at say Tesco or Big C?

Finally, a question that does not belong to the food subforum, but I didn't know where else I could post it. Is it easy to find bags of clay to make a face mask? Where?

Looking forward to your replies. Thanks!

Hi DGM102, yes you can find many kind of moka pot ( if I got your answer) in many coffee equipment shop, and even in most of shopping mall, now become very popular even in Thailand as well.

Average costs depend even by the size but I remember a 4 cups moka pot it's around 400/500 baht, in Ramkhamaeng road there is even a Bialetti dealer.

If you are interested in something different just take a look at my website just clicking on the quick mill banner or checking my profile.

Ask for any information.

Have a good kuppa.coffee1.gif

To answer 3. You might find chick peas and lentils in the supermarkets, but you might also be surprised at the prices. For much better prices try Little India (Prahurat).

Prahurat is indeed a good place to find these things but for many people it's a little bit out of the way, and it doesn't help not being on the BTS or MRT routes either.

If Sukhumvit is more convenient for you then there's a handful of places I know of (sois 3, 10, 23, 18 and 20) where you'll find dried lentils, chickpeas etc at similar prices to Prahurat. If that's better for you then say so and I'll elaborate.

Obviously these things keep for a long time so you'll only need to make the occasional shopping trip to stock up anyway.

Yes! In fact, I'll probably be living in Sukhumvit 63. If you could give me some specific details I'd certainly appreciate it. Thanks a million!

Sorry for the delay.

The largest place and with a good selection of everything Indian is called Spice R Us, located underneath the Reberandt Hotel / Apartments on soi 20 (or cut through from 18). This place is also open quite late, to around midnight. It's walkable from Sukhumvit.

Another place I like is on soi 23. Head down the soi, go over the crossroads with Giusto I

If you'll be living on soi 63 then I think there are also a couple of places on soi 71 but I don't recall where exactly. I guess you could chance it but it's a very long soi to walk the length of.

Good luck.

Sorry, not sure what happened there.

....... Another place I like is on soi 23. Head down the soi, go over the crossroads with Giusto Italian restaurant on the corner and it's a little further down on the right hand side just past an Indian restaurant. It's a single shophouse convenience store place and the woman there is very helpful.

The soi 3 place is down the first little soi on your left hand side when walking from Sukhumvit. Easy to find as it's just a small dead end soi with lots of Africans hanging about.

Near the start of soi 10 there's a small right angled soi on the left that joins back onto soi 10 about 50 metres down. There's also a shop in the top corner of this little sub soi.

And finally there's a small shop at the end of soi 18 on the right. It's a bit of a walk and Spice R Us is probably a better option if you're in that area but this place also sells nice vegetarian samosas and (I think) homemade Indian sweets which is a nice touch.

Hope that helps.
