Hi guys I've been to thailand briefly in 2010 and stayed in a hotel in bangkok for 1300 baht, and spent about 400 baht in chiangmai for a similar hotel, I then spent a few weeks at a thai boxing camp but left after a week it worked out about 120 baht per day but was extremely basic (although did have shower) I ended up leaving to go to cambodia which was extremely cheap.. and i left after 3 months or so there...

I'm going to thailand for a few months, then intend going to laos after a few months in Thailand...

I have about 4 thousand UK pounds and was wondering how far that will take me...

I'd like to know how long that would get me in the citys, and what a rough price guide I could get staying at cheap hotels/guesthouses...... and also how long is that going to last

finally can anyone tell me, how long my money would last in laos

cheers

Prices vary between cities. I can't imagine you'll find cheaper than 550, (maybe 500 at a push) a night in Bangkok for a cheap backpacker place around Khao San or a cheap locals hotel shag place.

Very nice little guesthouse near me (just south of Saphan Taksin BTS) for 500, aircon safe private WC hot water fridge gazillion channels free wifi. Have to buzz them to open up if you're out very late though, but they don't mind guests.

It really depends on what you do. There is surviving and then there is living and everyone else has their own expectations/needs. 4k is not a great deal of cash. When i stay with the missus (in the centre of bkk) i spend around £500 a month. we eat street vendor food and perhaps eat out twice a week. The neighborhood we live has few farang as such is fairly cheap (she rents out her second flat across the hall for 5000bht/month). We both dont drink or smoke and we have a car so that cuts the costs down loads. with her job we get entry to night spots and soft drinks for free so entertainment costs nout too.

In contrast before i met her i could easily blow £2000 a month having 'a good time'. throw beer money into that, "dating" shagging, living in sukhumvit (or down south in the touristy islands where everything is deer) and internet etc and your looking at alot.

Sure if you really know what your doing and have a lil lady to help get you deals/speak then you can survive for alot less but if its a holiday and you want to have fun then minimum £1000 a month.

so answer your Q is 4 months.

shock1.gif The wife told me the shithole hotel over the road here (Chonburi) was only about 80-100 Baht when I asked how can 2 teenagers on a clapped out motor bike afford it for a shag, who had just pulled up. Thankfully I've never had to find out if it's true.

A blanket, broken toilet, broken shower and the chance of a used condom being left in the room from a previous occupant for 500 odd baht is the lowest my standards will go after rather too many leos.

£4k = 200,000 Baht, give or take.

Very basic apartment, Thai style (mattress on floor, wardrobe, wet room, maybe balcony): 1,000 - 2,500 per month, excluding deposit (x2 months).

The further away from tourist or westerner areas the cheaper it gets but you'll need a Thai 'assistant' to find the best deals.

Utilities should be no more than 500 - 750 per month on top, after that it's up to you.

If you are only 'passing through' you don't need all the mod cons. After all, a room is just somewhere to hang your hat...

I stayed at the Rinrada hotel ... southern fringe of Bangkok

http://www.rinrada.com/room_rate.php

5,000 Baht/month, furnished, balcony, wet toilet, large older style pool, gym, utilities extra

(ALWAYS read the meters personally as to not get a shock with the bill)

12 Bath Songtel ride to either a major shopping center or BTS Bearing.

25 Baht noodles across the road

30 baht for chicket/rice and a clear consommé (soup) 1 baht extra if you want water with that.

Well, how much Scottish blood do you have sonny?

Implication being that the Scots have penchant for being prudent with their pounds ...

I really don't see the point of this post. Doesn't seem to be played with a straight bat...rolleyes.gif

These days £4k is 2-3 months. Four at a push. Let's not kid the OP.

He wants to eke it out longer then he should be asking on the Thorn Tree thing...

The answers above are based on Bangkok prices, he could live a year out in the provinces together with girlfriend on that money. Well nine months anyway

How long is a piece of strong?

Rents range from less than 50 pounds/month for a studio flat in the sticks to more than 5,000 pounds/month for a house in central Bangkok.

Food costs range from less than 50 pence/meal for takeaway noodles from a street vendor to more than 50 pounds/meal in a nice restaurant.

Etc

To answer the OP's question, your 4k pounds will last somewhere between 1 day and 1 lifetime in Thailand.

Thats a fib. it will last no more than three months.

17 grand lasted me 6 months when I first went to Thailand nearly 9 years ago. I had a great time and wish I could do it all over again. I also wish I had saved my money! laugh.png

I once stayed at some dingy room in Phnom Penh for $5 a night. Not very pleasant but my money lasted.

How long is a piece of strong?

Twice half it's length.

Unfortunately that answer got me kicked out of the Physics lesson for that period.

Back in my days......when I was into Physics.........we never had a piece of string.

I don't think it had been invented.

But to the OP

Enjoy your stay, how ever long your 4,000 will last.

How very difficult to answer, since it depend entirely on your standard & way of life.

I saw very nice rooms at soi kopai, pattaya for 2500-2900 per month, i could stay there myself.

quite new building nice rooms with normal toilet, no air con obviously.

IMO assume 30.000 per month, you can survive on less but then you're stuck on beach rd with

a warm beer chang in your hand.

IMO an experienced Thai-speaking frugal-living sober and celibate man can live here quite well on THB 25K per month, maybe 30 for Bangkok, less upcountry living like the locals.

Inexperience and little Thai language adds at least 5K per month to that.

Alcohol or other substances completely depends on your tastes and level of dependency.

The biggest wildcard is your desire for "romantic" companionship, and the cost of that greatly depends on your age, appearance, Thai language skills (again) and sense of morality - all total wild cards, but say between 5K and 20K per month, any more than that is IMO foolish.

Hope that helps.

I think that's about the best answer you are going to get. For that you could eat fairly well, and have a pretty nice place to rest your head - it is surely the "socialising" (alcohol, partying, and women) that it's impossible to judge without knowing you and your likes.

OP has already been here and should know how far the money will go.

There are always methods to make the money last longer.

But as the member in post # 6 stated, There is surviving and then there is living.

That's a lifetime for some guys. We usually read about their deaths and get to see pixelated photos of their corpses when the money runs out.

I don't suppose the budget includes health insurance or the visa runs or the contingencies..................
