or shall i get on the songtaew and rent it off Lamai town?

If you are going to stay in Lamai then rent one in Lamai. If something goes wrong with it how are you going to get it back to Nathon for them to fix it?

renting from hotels that you stay in seem to be the best option as u do not need to leave your passprt as the hotel have your room as a depsit
