Tukcom Next To Foodland.....

The IT department of Tukcom is never packed, why do you think IT- center on the top floor has reduced it's selling space by two thirds.Wake up Mr rose colored glasses.

It doesn't have to packed all the time to be profitable. This is always a difficult point for you to grasp.

IT City, on the 4th floor, has had some problems everywhere in the last year, hence its share price fell 25% last year. Competition and management problems have taken their toll. So this decline you can rejoice in, but--it doesn't have anything to do with a poor and dying economy.

And why would a chain like JIB or Hardware house rent 35 small outlets in the same building ( Panthip) to all sell the same items at the same price if they could just serve all their customer at one or two shops.

Because one small outlet can't, in fact, serve all their customers. Even w/ their multiple outlets, I've had to wait in line at Hardware House at Panthip, for example. Similarly, Banana IT and Hardware House have two outlets at Tukcom and both are doing well enough. Recently I gave up waiting at Banana IT to buy a new flashdrive, as it had so many customers. Banana IT is doing well at Central Festival, too.

I shop at Tukom. In fact, this this past weekend I bought some new RAM from Banana IT.

I paid 1300thb for the 2 x 4GB chips.

These are the EXACT same ones I bought and you can compare what I paid with what they are selling on Amazon.UK and newegg for (I couldn't find them on Amazon US)

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820145328

What I paid 1300thb for sells on Newegg for 1540thb

http://www.amazon.co...y/dp/B0045HXQV4

1654thb on amazon UK

or directly from Corsair for 1848thb

http://www.corsair.c...3m1a1600c9.html

I was more than happy to pay 1300thb for the pair and know that if I brought them home and had any issues that Banana would swap them out for working RAM on the spot. No shipping delays and custom/duties was also a bonus.

Excellent post with the rare facts and evidence. I've noticed the same: competitive prices in Thailand or even less. Not all the time, but often enough so that you can't make a hard-and-fast rule. Many times I've decided just to buy some computer part in Thailand rather than bring it back in my suitcase even when I could.

The last time I went to TukCom I found the place was half empty & the staff in the shops were too busy playing with their phones & iPads to serve me.

When I was lucky enough to get some service they didn't have what I wanted or they were too dear & didn't want to negotiate.

Needless to say I've stopped going there at all now. There are plenty of little shops that provide reasonably price goods and service.

Does anybody actually shop at "Tuk Com " ???? They are anything but "tuk", if you

know how much things go for anywhere else in the world. For me it has been a great

source of frustration to go there. Anything I typically want they don't have and must

order, and btw, it will be extra, and I must give them a a deposit ....

The only thing I have ever bought there are hard drives and PC power supplies.

Any serious shopping I do online, and anything in between, I make a quarterly trip

to bkk ...

Even buying things things locally for warranty is not worth it. Synnex takes 6

weeks to replace a Hard Drive, DTAC manages it in 4 weeks.

Whats the point ? Buy on ebay, if you have time, I had 100% success with that.

luudee

I've bought several items in there over the last 4 years and the only complaint I have was a cooling fan that will only work if you turn it upside down but it was only 120 baht. I just leave it upside down on my laptop's keyboard when I'm downloading.

I've also had my Acer's memory increased a couple of times to the point where it is now at its maximum capability and a couple of repairs as well. This work was all carried out by the shop at the back on the RHS on the third floor, it was done while I waited for a few hundred bahts each time (in one case just 100 baht) and they give you an orange juice or a coke to drink while you wait. I'm from the UK and you could never get such great service anywhere back in Blighty so I believe in giving credit where it's due.

I've had much the same results on the first floor with any problems I've encountered with mobile phones in spite of the language barrier.

I've found it to be a wonderful shop and would recommend it to anyone just as it was originally recommended to me.

What an embarrassment the current building is. elevators are slower than rocks.

Who's getting embarrassed? It's Thailand and most tourists are quite happy with it.

I'd prefer Tukcom stay where it is.

Maybe it's just because you come across as being too grumpy.

I don't know when you last went there, but it's normally very busy. The staff understand that people like to browse, so they leave them alone - that's the way I like it.

The computer stalls I understand, sometime you might need a personalized service, like building a computer and the small mom and pop store can have an advantage here, but as more and more people are buying notebooks, the avenues for these shops to keep making money can only be decreasing,

the only thing a whole building full of IT shop is good for for me is buying parts, usually these are taken up by chain stores like hardware house or banana, close locations and competition makes price comparison quite easy,

or stuff like RAM, harddrive and motherboards, but too bad about higher end stuff like quality case, power supply or water cooling or even SSDs, I'd have to go to the IT malls of Bangkok to get that, and even then only a few shops carry the stuff.

And with online shopping starting to takeoff in Thailand now, I don't even bother getting into my car commodity stuff anymore.

It used to be that I could go in the place walk around and browse and be delighted and might ended up spending money on things I didn't know I wanted, in that regard Tukkom on south rd has failed; five or six years ago I would go in to the dvd shops and spend about 3-4 grand on tv shows from back home, and porn, but now that broadband is pretty much everywhere, I don't even need that too.

I hope they'd get it back at the new one next to Foodland.

Another thing I can't quite comprehend is all the mobile phone stalls though? for second hand phones or accessories like cases and all it makes sense, but some stalls are selling brand new phone for the same price if you were to buy in big shops with flashy salespeople?

what kind of punters would prefer to buy it of some random stall that could disappear at any moment? how does that work?

sometime even Tukkom advertise a price for certain phone too? do they just act as a front for TukKom when they are selling new phone? I have seen the girls in the stall run around and fetch or 'borrow' from the next stall a new phone to sell to customers??

No problem to find such at Tukcom. Even Hardware House carries Coolermaster. Had a Coolermaster HAF sitting there last time I looked, one of the most beloved cases. You can also order and wait a few days if the stuff isn't in stock. Check the websites first.

I bought a SSD drive not long ago from JIB.

What kind of punters would prefer to buy it of some random stall that could disappear at any moment? how does that work?

The ones with the cute and charming salesgirls?

Tourists and local Thais, esp friends and family, buy there.

It's the Thai way. Get used to it. Commissions are shared etc.

Spot on...I just put together a top end desktop from scratch and bought all my top end parts at tuk com...3750k CPU, 3tb hds, 120 gb ocz vector SSD, ASUS MoBo, corsair case, 8 gb vengeance ram, aftermarket fans, the works. Between jib, hardware house, and banana, it was a snap and prices pretty much the same as if I ordered them off amazon USA.

The old one is actually a very old building!

Used to be a shopping mall, before even Royal garden was built!

If i remember correctly they had deadly accident with an elevator (not the existing ones, but one on the outside of the front of the building).

Then i guess the building was haunted Thai style and sat empty for the better part of the 90's until TukCom moved in...

Sent from my GT-S5660 using Thaivisa Connect App

So that's why the elevators are so slow.

Next year at the earliest...

Tuk Com City (IT Mall)

The 5th Fl. mall is a shopping center for IT products and has computer hardware, software, gadget, mobile phone, digital camera, electronics parts for electrical appliances such as TV and washing machine, remote controls for DVDs and TV, bookstores and coffee shops. There are also a food hall downstairs & a small section for clothing vendors.

Bought a Nokia mobile in TukCom a couple of years back - made the educated decision that the best shop to buy from would be the one with the flirtatious & super-cute sales girl who was very adept at massaging my ego whilst avoiding any direct response to my technical questions. Took it back a couple of days later when i discovered it would only do about 25% of the things it was supposed to.... She then politely, if reluctantly, informed me that it was a fake but if I had 5 mins to spare she would massage my ego again for a while because her boyfriend was held up in trafiic and was running late... Begrudgingly I agreed and whadd'ya know - a few minutes later the lack of functionality seemed trivial. Great service - I still kinda miss her....

I asked the manager of the shop I use in Tukcom if he was going to transfer to the new building when it was finished. He said emphatically not, so it appears that there may be two Tukcom centres in the distant future.

Regarding the delay in building a new centre just remember how long it took to widen the road over the hill to Jomtien.

At least there will be a new building at some point. What an embarrassment the current building is. The Mecca of high tech and the escalators don't work and the elevators are slower than rocks.

Take the stairs then. It is called "repairs" and should they do all that work while you blink? Why would YOU be embarrassed?

Any time I've been in Tukcom, which is rare, the place is humming, any day of the week. It must be a real business magnet because the managers continue to stuff in more counters and kiosks. They've even blocked off one entrance/exit on the Pattaya South road side for an exchange bureau, I think.

I rarely go in there now because that is one massive fire trap. Stairwells are partially blocked on nearly every floor with sellers or ATM machines or displays taking up passage space, such that only one person can pass at a time, up or down. Main floor aisles are one person at a time passages. If there's ever an emergency in there, hundreds will die.

Well that's pretty much the case in any multi-story (and many single story) buildings in Thailand. So tell us, do you spend most of your time outdoors when in Thailand?

Been in many multi-storey retail buildings and they're all pretty bad. So agreed. But Tukcom seems the worst example of making life miserable and potentially riskier for a shopper. And yes, I spend a lot of time outdoors, tending to shop in outdoor markets. In general, I'm just not a mall person.

I don't recall ever being in a multi-story shopping mall in Thailand that is obviously more of a fire trap than TukCom. I can't think of another place that allows vendors to operate on the stairs!

MBK in Bangkok used to be pretty bad, and I'm sure there are some second rate malls in Pratu Nam or near the Victory Monument that would give Tuk Com a run for your money in that regard, who knows what the upcountry Tuk Com in Isan or Rayong would be like though?

Agreed...one of the worst. Wasn't there an actual fire there years ago and many people killed...it's referenced in the thread I think.

Like so many things in LOS, like crossing a road, one just has to takes one's chances or never leave one's home sad.png

They have just started building it seems ?

They have started building over a month ago, it is unclear as if it's Tuckom though.

I wondered about that as well. A year or so back there were huge billboards everywhere announcing the imminent arrival of the new all singing all dancing Tukcom. I don't recall seeing any recently which is a little surprising if they have now actually started building the place.

I've seen the work, what I haven't seen is anything confirming that it is to be the new Tukcom.
