the last few weeks our dog[malamute] is scratching violently behind his ears one side more than the other,as he has powerful paws he is making one of them inflamed and raw,we have started to treat them with skin cream, his ears are clean and he lets the wife handle them so it doesnt seem to bother him so anybody with these or simuler breeds got any idea's as to why he is doing this, our vet is not due till next month for his heartworm jab and i dont want to bother him if its normal.

Best to have the vet check the ear inside with that special little lamp (don't know how's called).

Could be ear mites or fungal infection? It is not normal for a dog to be scratching until the ear is inflamed and raw. Sometimes, allergies can cause a dog to scratch its ears too. Best to get to vet asap and get it seen to.

900 Baht? Hell.

In the pet store, you can buy ear cleaning fluid. Tilt his head over once a month, fill the ear cavity up, squelch it about (around about the same place he was scratching) for 30 seconds or so, then release and stand back. I do it out and about on the walk by the way, first time you do it you will realise why. A shower of yellowy waxy ear juice flies out like a firework display. I do it every month usually following a sniff check on my hairiest husky.

on lilee the lhasa have tried everything including rosemary and lavender oil that i prepared... her ear canal just doesnt let anything out once its in.even if she does a thorough shake of the head.. next step may be hydrogen peroxide... have plucked hair out , daily cleanings... the itching is definately, for her ears, from yeast (candida) since it gets worse now that summer heat is here...

rare for prick ears to get ear ick problems ; more likely to get burrs or thorns or wheat grass (fox tail type) things... all those ear cleaner mixes sold are all mixes of boric acid, glycerin, sometimes ivomec in small amounts... we have drawer filled with them.... getting rid of candida the only thing is most likely change of diet to raw food, or special hypoallergenic type foods which here, i cannot afford... plus she eats thai leftovers from our food... all sources of sugars for the yeastie beasties...

also once dogs have yeast in ears its most likely that they have it on their paws at the base of the toenail (she does)... blech
