Thailand’s floods continue in North, South

SUKHOTHAI, June 12 - Flooding in the northern province of Sukhothai and the southern province of Trang has not eased, as swollen rivers are still overflowing into low-lying areas, submerging houses and roads.

In Sukhothai, floods have entered three communities in the provincial seat. Pichet Thaikla, mayor of the Sukhothai municipality cooperated with the Third Army Region and college student volunteers to reinforce flood control dykes along the Yom River which has flooded riverside communities and a section of Highway 101 since yesterday.

About 40 families, whose homes are under water, moved to temporary tents provided by the authorities. If there is no more rain in the North, the flood situation is expected to ease in two or three days.

Far to the south, in Trang, six villages in the provincial seat are under water. Many roads are impassable for small vehicles, as the Trang River overflowed into low-lying areas.

Although rain stopped three days ago, the water level in the river is still high. Local residents lack drinking water and suffer from water-borne diseases such as rash and athlete's foot. Flat-bottomed boats used for evacuation and relief supplies are insufficient to help people in flooded areas. (MCOT online news)

BANGKOK, 12 June 2012 (NNT)-The Public Health Office in Surin province has alerted locals residents to an outbreak of leptospirosis during the rainy season, which has already killed 17 people so far this year.

Dr. Sa-ard Weerajaroen of Surin’s Public Health Office said that farmers, especially rice growers, are among those at risks of contracting the deadly disease on the job. Leptospirosis is commonly found in rats’ and other animals such as cows, and buffaloes' urine.

Those who are experiencing such symptoms are advised to seek medical attention immediately. They should not rely on over-the-counter medicines, given the lack of proper medical care might permit complications to manifest themselves, consequently resulting in death.
