We went to Nai Thon other night to see if anything was open. At least four beach restaurants. Great. So we choose a favourite. And then we saw the devastation. The recent gales have transformed sections of the beach. My usual table under a tree on the sand was now gone. The waves have gouged out the sand and created two beaches; one a metre below the others. Trees on the shore are down; one already cut up and nestling the road. I felt sorry for the owners of these eateries but what can one do?

All illegal structures that are a blight on the beaches beauty. Good riddance to the restaurants but I think they will just return and build bigger and more intrusive structures.

Exact , all illigal buildings . Look at Surin when they clean up the mess ? Trees fell down in Rawai and nothing will be done - a year ago they move the restaurants but they are back. Why they let poeple enrich themself on public grounds on the side of the street at entrances of ......... . Regardless the dangrous situations they create . Ok , it is part of the culture and folklore , but ever thought if you rent a shop and they pull up infront of your shop , you pay xx xxx rent and they just CLAIM the right .

Beach erosion is caused by:

  • wind
  • rain
  • ocean waves
  • water runoff
  • human and animal activity
  • plant growth and decay
  • rivers

I think it is clear what is gooing on here .

There are ways such as using sandbags or better still huge granite rocks after time they will weather into the surround but at least they will act as some form of defence against erosion , trouble is the Thai's do not look at the long term problems they will errect a building in the hope it will not be washed away !!!!!

IMO the balance between beach and restaurants/buildings is pretty perfect at Nai Thon. The beach is huge and the structures are not permanent ones and are neat and tidy. We don't want every beach to be like Mai Kao as lovely as it is. Holiday makers do need some facilities to enjoy their day at the beech, and I think Nai Thon has got a great balance in that respect.

I also thought the beach being having a huge drop off carved by the waves was fairly common for a lot of the year on Nai Thon?
