Canadian Sisters Found Dead In Thai Resort

I think the testing of the Land of Smiles slogan has more to do with the corruption, scams, violence, and mafia activity that is pervasive throughout all levels of society here, from low to elite. Don't' blame natural disasters, we all know those can happen anywhere, and so can terrorism. This place is a well known haven for all types of people, unfortunately a lot of criminals like to call this place home too....I think those are the real tests

2 young women died and the main point of interest here at TV, at least in the first few responses, seems to be the rather irrelevant paragraph in the original report concerning Thailand as a "tourist magnet." Apparently the promotion of some agendas is never given a rest, no matter what the circumstances.

Hardly irrelevant!

Am I the only person who thinks it is very strange that so many tourists die in Thailand?

It's not strange. The Thais don't care and neither do they accept any responsibility or liability. Many deaths could be prevented with a different attitude by the people.

Which is why not a few Thais die violently on a daily basis, accidentally, and otherwise .

heheeh I have been coming to Thailand for 40 years no mafis problems, no scams, and no one hoping I die. Bad things happen to good people all of the time world wide. My best wishes to the family in their loss.

Nice to be able to afford such short visits . . .

I have not kept a count but we are certainly talking of dozens of deaths this year already, some accidents, some murders, many not fully explained or in very dubious circumstances. From the description of the room these 2 poor girls suffered a nasty end, we can only hope the police do a proper job of the forensics and investigation.

From new year 2012 until 27 February 2012 33 swedes have died in Thailand.sad.pngsick.gif

Once blood clotting has been inhibited, an animal may bleed through its gums or nose. If any of these effects are visible, you should seek immediate medical assistance from a veterinarian

Note to self.....Avoid Phi Phi Island unless I want to be poisoned..... This seems to becoming a bit like a rerun of the Downtown Hotel fiasco. If one person dies in odd circumstances the police can call it whatever they want. I personally liked the double heart attack concept the Chiang Mai police came up for the couple that died at the Downtown Hotel. I believe this to be the third death event of this type on a very very tiny island. As usual the facts will never be actually known ,but for sure something fishy is going on. Sad...... I wonder if the authorities will try to cremate the bodies again before a toxicological exam can be done by foreign outside experts .

That is what happened to the last woman who died in mysterious circumstances in Phi Phi....

In spite of floods and political unrest, there were 19,098,323 foreign visitors to Thailand in 2011. Given the enourmous numbers of visitors, I'm sure that percentage-wise, the number of farang deaths is a tiny amount, probably much lower than that many other countries. The sensationalist headlines that this website constantly reports make it seem like a dangerous place. It's not.

You don't really think those numbers are accurate do you? I'm a resident of Thailand. I've exited and re-entered the country a half a dozen times in the past year. Do you think I was counted not at all, as a resident (non foreign visitor), or once, or 6 times?

How terrible, my thoughts are with the parents. I was at a funeral only 2 days ago of the eldest son of a long standing friend. He was 37.

I kept a log for a while earlier this year of attacks or and/or deaths of foreigners in Thailand up to May 11 when I stopped recording. (see below). There may well have been others of which I was not aware during that time.

What a horrible way to die, the girls would know they were very sick. You know you are very ill when you vomit and are incapable of doing anything to clean up the mess.

Why didn't they call reception and ask for a doctor before they got too bad?

If its from something they've eaten, surely other people will have eaten the same stuff from the same place?

It does sound a very nasty poisin, maybe was targeted only to them intentionally?

I agree entirely, but I'm still somewhat puzzled as to why the reporter felt the need to make such a comment on devastating floods, political unrest and a bomb plot.

What on earth do these issues have to do with the unfortunate deaths of these two young girls?

19 Million.... think thats a lot huh..?????

What do you think of the odds of two persons dying in the same room on the same night are...... considering that the ages were 20 & 26 years old...... think they died of old age ????

Now multiply this by at least 3 times that we have had these double deaths in the same or adjoining rooms in the same night or the next day..... and these deaths did in fact happen in Phi Phi and more in the Downtown Hotel in Chiang Mai. Police conclusion?????? ='s coincidence.....bull

"They had skin lesions and it seemed that they had bled from the gums. Also, their fingernails and toenails were blue"

It sounds like the symptoms of a diving accident. isn't it ?

No these are not symptoms of decompression sickness. Blue nail beds can be caused by carbon monoxide poisoning maybe from breathing bad air in a scuba tank but this is extremely unlikely.

I stopped reading after the first one, which did not happen on Phuket. So much for the reliability of your list.

Phi-Phi, Chiang-Mai, causes never established? Or if they were, they took so long coming up with them, you wouldn't know whether to believe them or not. Now Phi-Phi again. Will the cause ever be established, or published? I think not.

Condolences & Sympathy to family & friends.

Condolences to the family, this is a tragic event and my heart goes out to you. I have seen this happen before where I live in Chiang Mai at a hotel named “The Downtown Inn”. In the course of two weeks nine tourists became sick and five died in the same manner as these two young ladies. The police and health department dragged their feet and in time most of the evidence was gone.

Some facts, there was signs of some vomiting but not a great deal.

No signs of diarrhea so that ruled out most illnesses due to food poisoning and indicated that the cause may have been chemical.

What I found out about the Chiang Mai case is that prior to the deaths there had been complaints logged with the hotel about bed bugs in three rooms. These three rooms were treated with a chemical made for killing bed bugs. The directions say to apply the poison to the mattresses, let it sit a while then remove the poison and allow the mattresses to be aired out. It is my belief that the chemical was applied and never removed and then the rooms were rented. As the victims lay in bed they became nauseous and had pains in their chest. They went to the hospital and the doctors were not sure what it was and sent them back to their hotel room for more rest. They were starting to feel a little better but upon resting in their room it came back again. That night one girl died, two were hospitalized with one needing open heart surgery and a lady in the next room which had also been treated was found dead in the same way as the as these two young ladies in Phi Phi. It was found that two others had died in the same way about a week or so before. Since then there have been others who have claimed similar incidences but they could not be confirmed to be related.

In the end, the Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai was torn down.

My advice is to make sure the health department takes the mattresses as evidence for testing. At the very least if they find nothing it will eliminate one possible cause.

Here is a New Zealand TV news story about the deaths in Chiang Mai, give it time as there is a short commercial first then a 15 sec delay before the story comes up: http://www.3news.co.nz/Thailand-deaths-Evidence-Sarah-Carter-killed-by-insecticide/tabid/371/articleID/210265/Default.aspx

My condolences to the family

I wouldnt have thought the thai authorities would have the right to cremate any tourist especially given that they are identified, hence the family contacted, its obviously very suspect having them both die, young girls, party atmosphere, bought some drugs cooked by a novice trying to make a buck.

Judging by what I have read of other posts on police etc cover ups, its an absolute disgrace to put it mildly that the thai authorities try to cover up the truths in these tragedies putting money before distraught families

I truly hope the family do get a canadian to do a post mortem

My condolences to the family and friends.

Their rapid deaths and symptoms seem to fit Dengue Hemorraghic Fever.

And so we have another armchair amateur pathologist.

Please Google in Dengue fever and see the details about this virus for yourself, as I can’t be bothered to explain.

I’ve had Dengue fever, twice, and can assure you it was not Dengue fever in the tragic case of these two sisters.

What is the point of making speculations? We have probably not been given the clear facts by the media and will have to wait for if and when more information comes to light.

I think more thought and respect should be given towards the family of these girls and a simple RIP and messages of condolences is more befitting during this time.

I have had Dengue Fever as well.

I said "Dengue Hemorraghic Fever" (which is different) and qualified it with "it seemed to fit" which is a speculation.

You however;

"can assure you it was not Dengue fever"

Are you a pathologist or tropical disease specialist with ESP?

I cannot understand the subdued reactions from any of the parties involved....also, going back to other cases of 'discovery of accidental deaths', the explanation is so similar...." thought they were tired or wanted to rest"....to 'stay in the room all day'......without even going for a walk....or ordering food ??? ....and when reading about the reactions from authorities, one never senses any urgency or desire to 'get to the bottom of it'.....

.....vomit all over......I just don't feel right about this....

Spare me days, this comment is probably a century too late! Another cover up will ensure and we will see the same sort of crap that happened in Chang Mia 3 years ago.
