[Myanmar] Rohingya Status Not Clear, Says Suu Kyi

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said on Monday that she was not sure about the status of Rohingya Muslims in Arakan State and added that Burma needed to clarify citizenship laws to help resolve the issue. Asked whether around 800,000 Rohingyas living in the state bordering Bangladesh should be regarded as Burmese, she replied: “I do not know.†She added that some claim that many who call themselves Rohingyas are actually more recent immigrants from Bangladesh. The trouble, she said, is that there are no clear-cut rules regarding who qualifies as a citizen.
