[Myanmar] Panglong-Type Talks In The Works: Aung Min

Aung Min, the vice-chairman of the Burmese government’s Union Peacemaking Working Committee, has told exiled dissidents that Naypyidaw plans to convene a meeting of ethnic representatives by 2014, according to a report by Mizzima. The meeting, which was likened to the 1947 Panglong Conference, could take place by the end of this year, according to Dr. Naing Aung of the Forum for Democracy in Burma, one of several groups that met with Aung Min in the Thai border town of Mae Sot last week. Ethnic leaders have long called for a Panglong-style federal union, after half a century of military rule.
