spacedcowboy
Hello can anyone recommend (from personal experience) travel insurance for a 1 year jaunt around South East Asia. Particularly from people who have had to fall back onto it in times of need. I'm backpacking around so will only be carrying clothes passport and cards, I'm not travelling with any valuables cameras laptops or phones but was just interested in having my healthcare costs, hopefully I won't need them covered and insured in the worse case scenario. I will be staying permanently away from the UK so need a policy the covers the entire one year period. Many thanks in advance of any replies. Tafia
Can't help with any specific company but beware of the small print a few friends of mine thought they were insured when in fact they were not. Many 12mth policies cover you for travel but only up to a certain time the small print will stipulate cover for lets say 90 days then they expect you to return to the Uk before cover restarts on another trip. I don't think continuous 12 mth cover comes cheap. Just Beware and read all the small print!! Good Luck with your trip. Many thanks I've had experience with this 60 days per trip type of policy and then return to the UK, the continuous 1 year policy providers seem a bit thin on the ground either that or I'm looking in the wrong places. aussiebrian
Don't know about the UK but always much better in Australia, to get the policy before you leave your home soil or you have to look at one from somewhere else, usually dearer and less cover for everything.. Mine costs only $730 from Australia, with unlimited medical and dental, $2 Million indemnity, etc. They have even covered me for some crowns on my teeth. 2 years ago, I needed some rabies shots with a total bill around $3000. My main concerns are it needs to cover me for riding a big bike, (some policies limit your cc's you can ride) and for SCUBA diving. If you do any extreme sports always check if it covers you. theoldgit
Have a look at the companies in the UK that specialise in gap year insurance, google it, typically they don't have the 90 day rule that Taffia refers do. Companies like Holiday Safe, who claim to be the cheapest, Endsleigh, STA Travel and Insure and Go all have suitable products. Research thoroughly and don't just look for the cheapest.
harrry
In most countries you have to get the policy in your home country before you leave. Online can be good...it is possible to get insurance that covers repatriation and medical but not theft etc. If you buy say an Australian policy any repatriation would have t be to Australia and your cover stops the minute the plane arrives. As an example a fully comprehensive one year polocy from Australia cost $1000. Make sure about cover in vehicles. You may find van travel and motorcycles is not covered as many only cover scheduled services in fully licenced routes.
craigt3365
I've used http://www.worldnomads.com/ before. Pretty good and easy to deal with. Here in Pattaya, AA Insurance Brokers can set you up also.

nong38
In the UK you will need to have been a UK resident before you can apply or you will qualify and there would be a problem if you require a payout. You will need to have resided in the UK for 3 months prior to application. You have not said how old you are either, it is important.

TommoPhysicist
Don't forget to pay extra for m/c cover. Excluded from normal cover as one thread already points out. Better to use a UK agent/company where you can write down exactly what you need, then sue them if the insurance fails to pay out. World wide insure and Down Under both offer suitable policies - up to 18 months validity. I have a Down Under policy and covers M/C up to 125cc as standard but not for Personal Accident Cover (permanent loss/death) or third party liability. www.worldwideinsure.com www.duinsure.com

ThaidDown
While on the subject of riding motorcycles, in addition to the cover on the insurance policy you also need to have driving license that covers the motorcycle you will be hiring. Yes sounds obvious, but I know of 2 people who rented m/c's in Thailand had accidents, and although covered by their travel insurance, the claim was rejected as they did not hold a motorcycle driving license, in fact one had never driven a m/c before.
