My fiance and myself are moving over to Thailand in September and planning on staying for minimum of 1 year and entering Thailand on an Extended Tourist Visa (60 Days) and doing the usual monthly Visa run for another 30 days etc. It appears to be cheaper (not by much) to buy a one way ticket but I have heard some people have had problems at airport check in counters where they have been refused travel because they don't have an onward ticket or return ticket. I will be flying from Edinburgh, UK to Amsterdam with KLM and then Amsterdam to Bangkok on China Airlines.

Has anyone had experience of flying One Way with KLM & China Airlines or have any advice? Tried phoning China Airlines but it's a nightmare trying to get a straight answer from someone. Last thing I want is to turn up at the Airport and be refused travel.

Thanks

If you have visas then one way tickets should be no issue whatever, if there are problems at the airport ask to see a supervisor.

Moving to the visas forum.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Indeed, it's when not having a visa you can be refused on a one-way trip, as the airline will be held responsible if you get refused entry (and have to ship you back).

With a visa you're good.

Only problems for visitors without visa and not ticket out in 30 days, the visa exempt stamp.

If you have visa no problem.

Tourist visas will give you 60 days at entering and can be extended by 30 days at immigration s in Thailand for 1900 baht.

My advice for you would be that apply for a triple entry tourist visa from the Thai consulate in Hull.

This will give you 9 months with only two border runs.

usual monthy visa runs not allowed, if your going by land they will give you ony 15days, reading your post if your coming in on a 60 day as said you can get a extra month, then its border but its limited as you are not a tourist if coming for a year or more. Triple entry as poorsucker states would be better.

Personally i would not come on a 60 day planning to stay for a year i am prity sure 1 60 day visa there is no way you can do monthly bounces to stay a year.

As for problems i am on a retirement and had problems at Birmingham as they do not have understanding of the visa's, difficult for them to know all the countries rules so they just have guidelines.

How do people who enter Thailand on 30 Day Exempt Visa's manage to stay so long. Surely they have to do Visa runs over the border each month? If anyone can clarify this for me then I would be grateful. With the triple entry visa, would this mean that every time I cross the border I would get 60 days added?

A Visa run and a Boarder run are 2 different things. A border run means just that, a run to the boarder where you will only get a 15 day entry back into Thailand.

A visa run means going to a Thai Consulate/Embassy in a boardering (or non-boardering) country and getting another 60+ 30 day Tourist visa. This way you will have to leave every 90 days for a new Visa. With any 60+ day visa you can still go to any Immigration office in Thailand after the 60 days and extend it for another 30 days for 1,900 baht.

Thanks for the info. So... let me make sure I have this correct as I'm worried I completely screw this up. If I enter Thailand on a 60 Day Tourist Visa and get an extra 30 days at immigration in Bangkok then I can either go on a visa run near the end of my 90 days and get another 60+30 day tourist visa in Cambodia or I can simply go to any immigration office and extend my Tourist visa for 30 days.

To be honest I would probably pick the easiest option of extending my visa each month for 30 days.

...but.... How many times can I visit the immigration office and extend my visa for 30 days? Surely they would clock on and start to think I'm taking the piss by staying in Thailand for so long. Would I need any additional documentation to extend my Visa for 30 days?

Thanks so much for everyones help. Much appreciated.

If you're in the UK, as I suspect you are, why don't you get a triple entry tourist visa from the Thai consulate in Hull?

The most I think you will be able to get is 9 month's that's with three 60 day tourist visa obtained in England in turn uping to another 30 day's at the end of each of their expiry date there in lie's a problem Immigration office's are not on every corner and you will have to find out where they are well before hand, and make sure that the last one is activated before it's start date run's out.

Re the what you have heared before about peep's being able to cross border's willy nilly and get another 30 day's is now no more the rule's have changed. Now you will get if no visa 3 trip's worth 15 day's each and then a red stamp and your out after 7 day's. Tip don't get your visa's till the last min: or the last one will be passed it's start date well before your will need to start it. Hope the last bit make's sense. As other's have stated speak to Hull they will put you right.

I've never had problems.

If you want to be super secure you can just buy a cheap onward ticket to Cambodia from airasia.

There is another option arrive with your tripple entry then you can obtain more 60 day visa's in Vietiane Lao 'the only place near by to get them' take's about two day's to process not a bad trip and you get to see Vietiane and a bit of Lao. Just look up Lao Thai visa office and all the info there. Hope this help's.

Thanks for the info. If I went with the triple entry visa that basically means I can leave and enter Thailand to extend my visa for 60 days 3 times within 180 days? Is that correct? What would my options be after the 180 days is up? I'm totally confused.

If I leave Thailand via air, can I get a 30 day visa rather than the 15 day visa going by land?

Right your first 60 day visa you can extend for another 30 day's cost 1900bt at any immigration office BKK, Pattaya, Phuket, Chang Mai, Nakon Sawan, ect there are many you will have to look them up you then have to do a border run ie cross border to another country 'several' you only have to go in get a stamp out and another in can be done in a matter of min: depend's where you cross and how many peep's are waiting, that will start the next 60 day visa you then do the same again with that one but as I have said check when the last one has to be started it will be dated so quite easy, that with the best of luck will get you to 9 month's or there about's as they only last for 90 day's and that will be less than the full 9 month's. Then you will have to go to Vietian Loas a post has been put in this section on what you have to do headed getting a 'tourist visa in Laos'. You can then obtain another 60 day visa I think you can get a double so that will give you enough time to see out your year. If you do as I have stated you will not have any problem's and that include's the one way ticket you can always get a 1 year open ticket cheaper than getting two single's. Best of luck and have a good holiday.

Thank you very much fredob43. Thats the exact kind of explanation I needed. All this visa nonsense gives me a sore head.

Much appreciated.

Your welcome. It's not hard but most of us that have done the trip's visa's ect seem to think that everyone has done the thing's before and give just general idea's of what to do. As for the 1 year open ticket you may find you will have to travel the hole way by the same airline. From Scotland I cant help you there that's on your head but KLM must do something on those line's. If you send me a PM I will send you my phone no: in Thailand and if you get any problem's while your here you can always give me a call it'll be no problen to help you out. Fred.

i came last week with KLM to BKK , and nobody checked if i had a visa( have a Non O multy) , used online print boarding pass & automatic drop of luggage at Amsterdam , even by boarding no questions about visa...!

Occasional gap in their security ??

The 30 day entries are not visa's they are visa exempt entries. The longest extension you can get is 7 days for a 30 day entry.

A 3 entry tourist visa is certainly your best option. Just be sure you do your 3rd entry prior to the visa's enter before date which is 180 days from date of issue.(do not get visa too early) this will give you almost 9 months without having to get a new visa if you extend each 60 day entry 30 days at immigration.
