WebBangkok Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Hi, I just noticed on the weekend driving to Hua hin, I was going about 40kms and our and when I wanted to take over a guy, I floored it and I notice when I looked in side mirror, there was a little bit of black smoke that I noticed. Is this normal? I got a new Ford Ranger WT which has don 6,000 kms. I know its not normal on petrol engines, is this just a diesel thing? Or could it be something else?
transam Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Put a tank or two of Shell V-Power in and see if the same happens before we go further. 1
Popular Post transam Posted July 10, 2012 Popular Post Posted July 10, 2012 black smoke is oil (faik) ... not good... Blue smoke is oil. Black or gray is fuel. 6
stevenl Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Could also be (with M/T) flooring it but in too high a gear.
transam Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Could also be (with M/T) flooring it but in too high a gear. Yep agree, but OP, please try Shell V-Power and let us know if it cures your worries.

Kwasaki Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Yep !! I would say you floored it too. http://www.dieselsmoke.com.au/
transam Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNND, if you have been poodling around you will get crap build up in the exhaust system which will blow out if you floor it, BUT, not so with V-Power. Weeeeeeeeell, thats the case with the Toyota.
Popular Post Semper Posted July 12, 2012 Popular Post Posted July 12, 2012 I like the smoke. Keeps the tailgaters at a distance. 3

guzzi850m2 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Does it have turbo? All diesel engines nowadays have turbo, well 99% have.
Daffy D Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Does it have turbo? All diesel engines nowadays have turbo, well 99% have. Well in that case just to add to the list possibilities causing the black smoke - it could be a turbo problem
how241 Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 black smoke is oil (faik) ... not good... Blue smoke is oil. Black or gray is fuel. Yes, Black smoke is too much fuel.
Tanaka Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Not to worry! This is quite normal on a turbo diesel when you give it a handful. If it is excessive, it might need adjustment in the ECU but I do not think this is the case with the new Ford of the OP. He said it was a little black smoke and that is normal.

AND you should mention that condensation (water) inside the muffler can build up and not be removed if lots of town poodling. THEN, when you floor it, crap build up and water, mixed, are chucked out and hence, clouds of goooooooooooooooh.

Water is white smokeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yep, water is white but if mixed with diesel soot build up in the muffler that gets blown out, we have a dirty cloud . If you get a multi coloured cloud of smoke then the driver is on LSD .
NanLaew Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 If the OP's stated 6000km has mostly been done tootling about town then planting the foot when on the open road will blow the carbon build up out the back. I have done over 8000km on my 2.2 XLT since start of May and includes four +1200km round-trip 'thrashings' that keep the tubes clear. Diesel is smokier than petrol anyway so if this is the OP's first diesel, then only worry when it's thick and black like the old 10-wheelers with knackered injectors or blue-black and needs a ring job. Last 'thrash' saw me leaving Meaung Udon Thani at 11 pm and arriving at my mates place in Huayai, Pattaya at 5 am; 6 hours straight, no piss stops, no motorcycles, one 10-wheeler with no tail lights, about 10 overnight buses, no 'speed traps' and one routine police security check at the Mitrapharb/Phimai junction. The odometer showed 616 km door to door for average speed of 102.6 kph although there was large parts of the trip I was sitting about 140 kph. Great drive! PS. Can't tell what colour my exhaust smoke is at night either.
Daffy D Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Yes a regular good thrashing will clear the system and get things back in order. Pity it does not seem to work so well with wives and kids
