First Lpg Car

Featured Replies

just picked up a 6 year old vios with lpg conversion

was told we have to start car on petrol then run for 1 - 2 kilo then can switch to gas then have to switch back to petrol at last bit of journey

sounds like a pain to me

what is correct way to run car on lpg i have no experience of this what so ever

thanks

Most automatic lpg systems do this automatically. On a cold engine, it's indeed better to start on petrol due to the fact that lpg has zero lubrication.

Running on petrol the last bit only serves to make sure there is petrol in the injectors. Not doing this for a long time might create problems for your petrol injection system.

Personally I think when you have a "valve saver" kit installed ( which injects 2 stroke oil), the engine should see no problems from running on lpg 100%, apart as mentioned before, damaging the petrol system in the long run through non useage.

As lpg burns hotter then petrol, a valve saver kit should be used at all times imo, especially on newer 16 valve engines, to reduce the risk of damage to your valves/valve seats.

Older engines (notably the volvo B230 engine, the vw 5 cilnder engine etc) can run hundreds of thousands of km on lpg.

The newer engines might need a top end overhaul after anywhere between 60 and 100,000 k's. Still, even just 60,000 km should save you around 120,000 baht in fuel cost, so worst case scenario you'll still be ahead plenty....

so with the lpg system switched on it will look after its self and no need to switch of at end of journey as will get lubrication from petrol on start up

If it's an auto system, yes.

Do you know if it is lpg injection (4 small tubes, one to each cilinder), or the older vacuum controlled system (one aluminium ring in the air inlet tube with one tube leading to it feeding the gas)?
