I actually prefer the roaches to ants. little buggers get into everything

I'll take ants over roaches any day.

I keep an ashtray full of roaches on my desk. I'll take roaches over ants any day. thumbsup.gif

Perhaps a lesson would be in order then. Roaches normally live in the sewers here in Thailand. The only place I have them in my house is in the basement in the drainage pit and septic tank - where there are literally thousands. Occasionally one makes its way into the house where they're not welcome.

The other day I was plating up my dinner when this giant cockroach (from the septic tank) ran onto the plate and into the sauce.

Queensland, Australia and especially Northern Queensland is the worst place I've ever been for cockroaches. They'll carry a loaf of bread away while you'll sleeping... but the same as here - they breed in the sewers. For some reason the Australian breeds are much faster and more difficult to catch/squash/kill than the Thailand ones.

The little German cockroaches which breed in kitchens are the worst though because they live inside rather than just visit from the sewers. I've seen kitchens so badly infested with these that when you turn the light on at night the floor is covered with these pesky buggers. When you open cupboards they're all over your kitchen ware. It doesn't matter how clean you are, you have to spray for these at least once a year.

Needless to say I absolutely detest cockroaches (in the house) and will take ants if faced with a choice.

"Eliminate ants forever"

These guys have been around for more than 100 million years. I don't think it's possible to eliminate them in a couple of weeks, months or years. sad.png

similar...they were in the towel.

I dried myself jump into my clothes and went to speak with my staff.....

Very hard to make a straight face while speaking with people while the ants bite you in the balls....

happened to me on a few occasions.

painful

it clearly shows how disciplined and self controlled someone is....

I think even with nuclear weapons it won't be easy to exterminate them. Soviet tried to build a anti-ant bomb: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Bomba and could get a small area complete ant-free.

Lived in the NT for 30 years. They are the worst. Very big ones.

If anyone finds a source for borax in Pattaya please post so we can all get some.

I orderd from http://www.healthfoo...s=borax&x=7&y=7 on the 23rd and my goods arrived today. Very good service.

Sounds like a good source, but don't miss the humor in getting something to kill ants from a company like Good Karma Foods!

keep us posted in your results.. might have to order some myself from them.

I certainly will. The supplier has a disclaimer that it can take up to 2 days after money received before dispatch but mine was completed the next day. They send by EMS and give you the tracking number. Very good service.

If you want to mix poison with foodstuff that ants will eat use garlic.

I have found that ants will travel miles [english miles] to get at garlic.

I have garlic out and the ants don't touch it - however they attack the water in my electric kettle and run around my coffee maker.

Lived just north of Cairns ...don't remember any cockroaches...ants,snakes and mosquitoes abounded. Had some in Melbourne...they ARE fast for sure. The ones here are slow ..but not a problem..not so disgusting looking as the ones in Aus and Canada.

We owned a restaurant in Canada ...fricking millions of 'em used to live under the commercial dishwasher got in exterminators often but they always came back...

Re ants: been using boric acid, cooking oil and sugar mix for a couple of years here ( bought a kilo in Penang china town)...works okay but they always come back. They are often attracted by dead insects ...methinks. And there is one on my keyboard now.....human grease and cooky crumbs?

ToungeThaied..... How much Borax do you put in the bacon grease? Does it end up looking very white when you get it all mixed in?

This is a timely thread as the water pump switch has stopped working twice due to ants and this morning the laptop keyboard "m" key is not working after a night invasion by the critters. The war is on!

By the way, Borax is available at most garden supply stores. Thai cooks sometimes add it to food (especially street food mint balls) so it is a well known Thai chemical.

There is no "for ever" regarding ants

Ants have been on earth before and will be after men

Ants are not your enemies

You don't need to kill them, just relocate them by giving them food somewhere else

It's not always about food. Read the OP - he's had damage caused by ants all over the house. I've had a brand new Sony laptop invaded by ants which made a nest out of it. That's nothing to do with food but it makes them my enemy.

A laptop is FULL of delicious crumbs and it's warm and dark

Not my laptops. Food doesn't come anywhere near them, and the Sony I mentioned was brand new. It was in the bag in the wardrobe when they invaded. It took over a week to get them all out.

As I said, it's not always about food.

Its a pity we didn't use this about a year ago. We are now rebuilding a cabin that the buggers got into while we were away. Interestingly they went for the furniture first. Thanks for the info.

Do you think the little chinese or taiwanese men who assembled your laptop get lunch break?

No sir they eat their mapodofu and I chat with their colleague on the job when the boos is not looking

and I can tell you they do talk with their mouth full biggrin.png

funny how sometimes people let their prejudices preconceptions slip. what, at first, appears an innocuous remark can tell quite a story.

Why makes you think that the people assembling the laptops are either diminutive or male?

But, to be honest, i understand that you were joking.

You obviously haven't tried the borax solution.

I've heard that borax works on most insects, cockroaches, termites etc. It attacks their exoskeletons and all insects have exoskeletons and I can easily find borax at my local chemical supply shop, but in a crystal form and not easy to desolve in water. Any tips??

Thanks for the entertaining and informative post, Tongue Thaied. My hotel room does not have a real ant problem, but if I drop a candy peanut on the floor it will be covered by those microscopic ants within 5 minutes. Ant and the tropics seem to go hand in hand. I will remember to bring Borax from Canada when I come back next year.

no man should have have their stones chewed on by a bunch of bully ants, kill them all. use fly spray and a wire brush to get them off yr gonads, works everytime, so i've been told.
