Teen driver meets victims' families

Kesinee Tangkhieo

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Central Juvenile and Family Court yesterday had the underage driver meet the families of the people killed or injured in the 2010 tollway accident in Bangkok. The crash, which claimed nine lives and left several others seriously injured, is believed to have happened because the youngster was using a cellphone while driving.

Yesterday was the first time that the 18yearold girl has met the victims' families. After the accident, the teenager became the subject of public outrage because many felt that she showed no remorse for her action.

"The meeting is arranged under the Central Juvenile and Family Court Act as well as the Convention on the Rights of Child," chief judge Jiraniti Hawanont said.

He reckoned that this was the first time that a defendant, accused of killing and injuring others due to a reckless act, was given a chance to negotiate with families under the new law, which went into effect last May.

"It may be best to let them decide what to do," Jiraniti said.

According to him, the damaged parties want the girl to admit her guilt and the Criminal Court to read out a verdict in the case. The trials have already concluded and the judges will deliver a verdict if the remedialaction process does not work.

"We will hold more meetings but the negotiation process should not take more than two months," the judge said, adding that this was only related to the criminal litigation.

"No matter what they agree on here, it will not affect the compensation lawsuits filed with the Civil Court," he said.

BANGKOK: -- Fortyfive per cent of Thai monks were overweight and many suffered from chronic illnesses such as septic ulcers, high blood pressure, and diabetes, a study said yesterday. As a result, researchers will distribute material for monks and laymen about healthy and clean food offerings.

The research was conducted ahead of the Buddhist Lent on 246 monks in 11 provinces by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), Chulalongkorn University and Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.

A further diet study involving 29 monks at four urban temples and laymen found the monks’ consumption of over two glasses of highsugared drinks in the evening could lead to overweight and diabetes, while food offerings had too much carbohydrate and too small protein. Fifty per cent of the cooked food samples from alms offerings were found to be contaminated with coliform bacteria, the study found.

Private sector urges govt to integrate works of different agencies

BANGKOK, 31 July 2012 (NNT) – The University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has revealed that the private sector wants different government agencies to integrate their works for more effective results.

According to Director of the UTCC Center for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) Thanawat Polvichai, the people rated 7 out of 10 points on the Commerce Ministry’s product promotions; while the private sector rated only 4.7 points on the matter.

He cited that the private sector complained that the government did not pay much attention on the production factor. It also suggested that the government integrate the works of the Agriculture and Cooperatives, Commerce, and Transport Ministries in order to reduce the sector's production costs and in adjusting down the economic figures.

Dr Thanawat said many economic institutions and agencies such as the UTCC and the Bank of Thailand have scaled down their economic speculation of the GDP growth rate of 6% to 5.7%, adding that the Thai economic expansion, which was earlier predicted at 5.4%, has also been lowered to 5%, indicating a slower-than-expected economic recovery. He also stated that product price control is necessary at the moment.
