ignis
In the UK the X308 is something like 9 miles to the gallon + the petrol is good quality....... here the petrol is of a low quality, no idea how it would run and for how long.. [read somewhere some time ago about low quality petrol messing up the fuel pumps/injectors] Even the brand new Mitz Mirage has had a recall already because of the low quality petrol here

billd766
Assuming that you get lucky and import your car for a reasonable price, where will you take it if it breaks down, needs a service, needs spares and in the event of an accident where will you find body parts. This link may provide a clue http://www.jaguar.com/gl/en/dealerlocator/?country=TH&x=t&service= http://www.aasautoservice.com/AAS_FrontBackup/Used_Cars/UsedCars.aspx http://www.classiccarclubphuket.com/JaguarXJ6.html
Radar501
Tata Motors is the new owner of Jaguar, so maybe the company could rebadge the Tata Nano as a Jaguar. It is the cheapest production car in the world, so you could drive around in a new Jag but at a fraction of the cost you are used to. Just drool over the sleek lines of the model displayed below. fish fingers
Thanks Spoonman, thats good to know its taxed on the original purchase price of around 2000 gbp,I think you may have misread here. yes I did I can't find a definitive answer on this on here and thai customs site is hard to understand or I'm missing the answer. Regarding MPG, the X308 does around 18-20 mpg, i.e., when not stuck in daytime traffic.. the only car I had which came close to 9mpg in town was a old Bentley Turbo R, but on M4 runs I cd get up to 25mpg. fish fingers
You're problem here is twofold. 1. This question gets asked at least once a week. The collective answer is that it will be prohibitively expensive and difficult, or you will lose the car. 2. You have mentioned a connection. I don't think you really understand how this works. For an influential person to step in and intervene in the normal process is possible, but in your case unlikely. To do so he would be depriving others of an opportunity for their normal graft. So there is an opportunity cost that he is now indebted for and would be expected to repay. Why would he assume such a burden or you? If you were in regular business with him he may, or if he was a great personal friend or family member he may also. That your ex gf knows him is not really a strong enough connection and in all likelihood she is just steering business his way where the normal pocket stuffing will occur but all concerned will assure you that he has gotten you a 50% discount and you will end up taking him to dinner after he has fleeced you. Good luck. Thanks for the advice and if it wasn't crystal clear before then its clearer to me now how things work in Thailand. My ex is not that type tho, she wouldn't be doing a deal behind my back. Its more that Thai Chinese connection thing, they help each other in mysterious ways..sometimes about money, other times to look connected and important Edited August 3, 2012 by fish fingers
sezze
If it is easy , everbody had done it by now , including all the Thais . A 10y old Honda Jazz is not worth a lot in Europe . Now , they should start locking treads with import on it , unless it really has viable info in it . . A car in Thailand is this expensive and no there are no ways around it . mogandave
I guess I was not clear. What I meant was that IF you could import it for 600K, THEN you would be able to buy them for 700K to 900K.

DLock
Fish Fingers...beware these random "connections" of an ex-girlfriend. It appears you are not wise to the ways of Thailand. It's all about money, and being a newbie, you are about to lose a boatload of it...or possibly a car. People have given you valuable advice for free because of their years of experience. Ignore it at your peril.
tombkk
Some misunderstandings here. The procedure to permanently import a personal vehicle can be found on the customs website. Scroll down a bit and find this information: Used / secondhand vehicles need to obtain an import permit from the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce, Tel. 02-5474804. For the vehicles with the weight less than 3500 Kgs., the importer needs to obtain an import permit from the Industrial Standard Institute as well. I am not aware that any such import permit has been issued by the Ministry of Commerce in the last couple of years. In any case, your friend's friend at customs cannot issue it anyway. It used to be possible to import used cars, and at the time, the customs value was based on the new value of the vehicle (as per the customs department's list) minus a certain percentage of depreciation per year. The percentage was determined by the customs department. Of course, if the value in the invoice you produced was higher than that, the higher value was applied. But that's moot without import permit. Any vehicle arriving at the Thai port without import permit will be confiscated. That means the permit must be issued before vessel arrival; you cannot ship the vehicle and then, when it has arrived, let your friend's friend at customs handle it. By the way, there is no such thing as a "shipping tax". I hope this is of help. Edit: I just saw that the depreciation table is now also on the customs website linked above. billd766
I believe you must also have owned the car in the UK for a period of time as well, a year or 18 months springs to mind.
ozyjon
Forget it,,, i spent two whole days at the Customs department with my Thai girlfriend who works for a customs import agency near the customs building, they actually helped me very well and found a young secretary that spoke english , we investigated every loop hole, the verdict, there are no loop holes,, forget it, tax is 300% on their assessment ( don't try it with fake receipts) they value the vehicle at what they think it's worth. Good luck many tried many went crazy over the experience, ha ha ha here we go again.
