Don't waste time with windows XP, 7 is the way to go, you won't regret it, all my customers were relucant but once they tried it, they loved it.

I didn't find one thing that Win7 can do that WinXP or even Win2000 could not.

(in an office, so no games....)

couldn't agree more, bought a laptop with 7 on it about 15 months ago and still miss my old xp which did things 7 just doesn't.

Out of interest, like what?

Yea, I'm interested to know too. I posted earlier in the thread several features that Windows 7 has... mainly related to taskbar and window functionality... ability to shake to minimize all open windows except for the one your working in, aero peek, jump lists, stackable programs in the taskbar, pinning, drag window to the side to have it autofit 50% of the screen... maybe seem like small things, but combined make Windows a much more productive environment. Windows XP has none of that, at least out of the box...

Got everything set up for her birthday as a surprise for when she came home from school.

Getting the small flat pack computer desk assembled was almost as difficult as getting to grips with Win7.w00t.gif

I loaded up some cartoons and a few games to get her started and will tweak the system and load up some more stuff in the coming weeks.

Got her Win7 to connect to my XP computer via the modem/router without too much problem and amazingly her computer is also seen by the TV that has a LAN Internet connection through the same modem/router. Don't quite know what to do with that but something to play with in the future.

Have not yet been able to get her computer to connect to my printer yet but plenty of solutions on Google so something else to get stuck into in the next few days.

I still don't like Win7, the colors are wishy-washy and nothing seems to have solid definition. It's very pretty but I am used to the solid colors and sharp lines of XP. Having said that it's not as complicated to use as I remember, so having tipped my toe in the water, so to speak, I shall probably set up a dual boot with Win7 on my computer and ease myself into the changeover ever so gradually.

Progress here I come.biggrin.png

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the "Aero" effects that make things look glassy?

You can turn that off and otherwise have W7 remain the same by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "personalize" and then select "Windows 7 basic", or you can turn off aero AND have the XP look as well by selecting "classic"... great thing is still maintain the functionality of W7...maybe for your daughter though, she would prefer the glassy look of aero?

also, if you right-click on the taskbar and go to properties, there are a bunch of options in there regarding taskbar/start menu functionality and how they're displayed as well as some other options.

Thanks "happysanook" will give give it a try,

As you guess daughter likes the "glassy" look but don't know if I can live with it too long.

Can you save a different theme for each User Account?

"A user account is a collection of information that tells Windows what files and folders you can access, what changes you can make to the computer, and your personal preferences, such as your desktop background or color theme. User accounts make it so that you can share a computer with several people, but still have your own files and settings. Each person accesses their user account with a user name and password."

Sorry for a bit of drift, but I was trying to install this only the other day and it doesn't seem to like the latest version of JRE (7) and tries to download v6 from a dead link. How did you get it working?

here is a thread with your exact same problem...

http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6856

the other option is to download j6 (http://java.com/en/download/manual_v6.jsp) and install manually,

but i'd try the suggestion in the thread above first... basically it recommends you uninstall all previous versions of java and serviio and start from scratch with the newest version of java, then install serviio.

also make sure you install the correct build of java... (32/64), though i'd guess it would warn you or refuse to install if you tried installing the wrong one...

...can also give this a go if you can't get serviio working: http://mediatomb.cc/

Micro$oft wants you to continue buying newer software, more profit for them. I get so frustrated by these tactics, they shove themselves down my throat more and more as peripherals I use won't run on XP. Windows XP is STILL the most widely used OS world-wide as it does about 90% of what most people want to do - read email, do facebook and youtube, and download porn. I rest my case . . . tongue.pngthumbsup.gif
