Yingluck Seen As Weak, Lacking Leadership

Fortunately readers have the choice of other sources. This week The Economist run a very interesting article about Thai politics http://www.economist.com/node/21559980

Instead of blaming Ms Yingluck for Thailand "dysfunctional" democracy, they look at the poor record of the democrats and blame them for its tendency for politics to be played out on the streets or through military coups. The leader of the DP, Abhisit Vejjajiva, a well-mannered old Etonian, managed to become prime minister from 2008 to 2011, but only as a result of some shady back-room dealings with other minor parties after Mr Thaksin was ousted in a coup in 2006.

So instead of looking at the records from Ms Yingluck, please be reminded that 70% of the Thai population wants her to stay at the head of the government, so her records can't be as bad as some wants us to believe, people should look at the dismal records of the democrats and their total inability to lead a credible opposition.

70 percent? No way.

"Regarding the performance of political parties, the ruling Pheu Thai Party was rated at 5.28 out of 10 points (53 %), the coalition parties at 4.37 , while the Opposition Democrat Party got 3.55 points (35%).

Nearly three out of four persons -- 70.4 per cent of the respondents -- say they want Ms Yingluck to continue her work, and only 9.8 per cent said a Cabinet reshuffle is necessary."

The poll is obviously flawed then. She would never get such a high percentage in an actual election.

Not flawed, it reflects the fact that Thai people are tired of political maneuvers. Ms Yingluck does an acceptable job for the majority of the electors and they wish her government to go for a full term. Basically they are tired of street protests, coups and other judiciary dirty tricks, they want a "normal" democracy.

The poll isn't flawed. A particular person's reading of it is flawed. 70% of the people don't want a cabinet reshuffle, and want her to continue her "work". Basically, they don't want someone else from PTP in her position.

These types of surveys can be misleading as one needs to know how the respondents were choosed and how the questions was structured. The first thing to consider is that the poll was conducted in Bangkok which is traditionally a Dem stronghold. If the survey covered the whole country it may look different. Even so the PT party scored a 52,8% approval rate against the Dems 35,5% which is significant and supprising. The fact that the survey showed that the people scored YS low but on the over hand only 5,2% wants her to leave office indicates that most people believe she can improve on her performance and trust her to do so. Only time will tell if she would be seen by history as a swan or a duckling.

Usually surveys in Thailand are complete nonsense...As you say 35.5 % Dems but only 5.2 % want that she leaves office.

Something is really wrong on these numbers....I would thing that a majority of the Dems want her to leave office.

Not necessary.

True, democrats want her (PT) to lose the next election but for the time being being they appreciate the current stability and are ready to wait for the next election. To create trouble to unseat the government will backfire and only reinforce the feeling of "evil forces against democratically elected government". We have a clear message here for the democrats to stop its maneuver to destabilize the current government but instead focus on winning the next election.

Indeed what are the alternatives - Chalerm, Jatuporn, as PM sweet Jesus what a disaster that would be.

@473GEO: Actually I fully agree on that, and not just for Thailand but in general, politics works this way everywhere in the world.

It's just that in Thailand it's more in your face, it's more obvious and the politicians here are more like cartoon characters than they are in Europe, for example.

Gee, a Bangkok poll produces unfavorable results for Yingluck. What about polling the rest of the country? Why not poll the people in Chiang Mai, Udon, Kalasin, etc.? That she has survived the wiles of her enemies is proof enough of her effectiveness.

Absolutely correct.

Last sentence spot on, not only survived but growing in stature.

Does the highest ranking minister being Chalerm with 20% support not mean anything to you?

Hun Sen wouldn't fare any worse for God's sake.

Some points I'd like to bring up in regards to the article and the Democrats. Please excuse me if I dont use specific posts because I am writing from my iphone.

It seems the article did a good job to pointing out why the Democrats werent able to win elections. The Democrats werent using the media to connect with much of the populace unlike the PTP party. This lack of coverage seems to be addressed by the Democrats and already I can see that they are now able to reach out.

Whether or not the Democrats had a backroom deal or not, its a belief, even a popular one but that's all it is. To condemn the Democrats based on this belief is rather naive and their rejection is rather unwarranted in my opinion. In short, just because they may have been sponsored by the military doesnt necessarily mean they will do a bad job running the country.

We may agree that Thailand is rampant with corruption and may be 'dysfunctional' but how can anyome blame the party that has hardly ever governed the country? It would be wise to place the blame somewhere else rather than on the ones who were mainly opposition.

I don't believe many things with certainty but I am certain that a Prime Minister is more than a job title. If one thing is said to be true about a PM's position is the ability to show leadership and represent the country. Like it or not, it is evident that PM Yingluck has missed many parliament sessions and do not wish to debate the opposition. She is much in absentia and personally I'd prefer a leader who is willing to show certain qualities of a PM regardless of his/her origin.

Based on my opinion I am confident that the Democrats have learned a thing or two and will make sure they do not repeat the same mistakes. Given chance of uninterrupted ( riots) governance, I'm betting they can set a Democratic framework. If Yingluck wants praises from me an those who have negative opinion on her performance, it might do her good to reflect and get rid of her dodging habits.

I'm pleased to see that Jurgen has managed to achieve such a harvest of orgasms on the back of this year report.

One can.only imagine the effect of YS in lederhosen on the poor chap.

I'll tell you what she has done.

She has appointed a spokesman to answer questions on her behalf because she is so bewildered about things she cannot answer anything herself.

She has appointed so many committees to oversee so many problems of her own making that she will ultimately drown her cabinet in meaningless minutes and will be rewarded with countless camels as a result.

She has passed every single project that she doesn't want concluded to Chalerm who, true to form, comes onto the scene with lots of bluster and promises and subsequently disappears without a trace.

She has liberated budget by shifting national debt to the BoT to finance and the allocated budget has somehow managed to disappear with little to no return.

She managed to make all kinds of promises to retain Japanese business and not one of them looks like being fulfilled.

She has squandered a full year of government time failing in almost all election promises whilst her useless cabinet strives to do everything possible for one man.

And she has managed to do everything that she can against reconciliation.

How we all look forward with baited breath to year 2 of this nincompoopery.

"And she has managed to do everything that she can against reconciliation."

please elaborate on how she has managed to do everything that she can against reconciliation?

"She has squandered a full year of government time failing in almost all election promises"

at least they've started them all, and do you not think the worst floods in decades that began her time in office might have had some impact on that?

you're obviously just basing that point on ridiculous timelines that politicical parties set themselves, and that's certainly not just a yingluck thing or a ptp thing.

"She has passed every single project that she doesn't want concluded"

what projects has she passed that she doesn't want concluded?

70 percent? No way.

I see that as 70% who :

Don't want street riots for the moment.

Don't want to pay for another election.

Don't want to listen to more election lies

Don't think the status quo will make things worse for the moment.

Don't want to lose some profits during a rare moment of quiet profitability

Don't think Thaksin will be back too soon at the moment.

Don't believe a bad leader is worse than a good one hamstrung by Thaksin's darts and arrows.

Don't believe there can be a fair election while Thaksin wants control and is alive to try for it.

Don't want to ruin period of relative calm for HRM health.

Don't give a flying fig who is PM.

Don't like Yingluck, but wants some peace for a few months, knowing it can't last.

And have enough reasons to stand pat, till things change on their own.

Pretty much everything.

So few finished to be laughable.

Several Dem projects have been cancelled so they can't get credit for starting them.

She is committee happy, you can't take blame if it's passed to committee.

The Japanese are wonderful at smiling and clapping politely and thinking something completely inverse.

Just because they are not complaining in public doesn't mean they are happy, just loss adverse with their investments here.

my point is that there are legitimate grievances to have with yingluck, but i think people push it ott with their expectations for results from a pm that's been in office a year.

Only been in a year is no excuse. The reason she is so inept is because she took a job she was not capable of fulfilling. If she had some political experience it could have been a different story.

no... you see that is the thing, it is an excuse when people are bitching about what she has done so far.

because it's coming from a biased perspective, and that doesn't mean i disagree with everyone's criticism that they have of her, i agree with some of them... i just think it's because it's coming from this biased perspective, that people are putting forward criticisms that they wouldn't be so harsh about if it was someone that they were in support of.

so it's not solely based on a neutral view of what she has or hasn't accomplished, a lot of it's coming from a pre-negative disposition about her.

that's my issue with posters on here.

What's with all the 'she's beautiful' comments? I mean in general. Is this really her saving Grace?

I like a good looking woman as much as the next man. Judge her on what she does and what she says.

So far in my humble opinion - she's been useless.

could you answer me this, what do you know that she has done since being in office?

please just you answer this, do you know anything that she has done?

i just want to see if you're speaking out of biased ignorance or do you actually know what you're talking about.

I think this is a question more suited for you. Please give a list of the accomplishments that she (read "Thaksin"), has accomplished since taking the helm over a year ago. And I'm serious... please list what campaign promises have been fulfilled and what then above and beyond that (if any) have been accomplished. Because for my observations, as well as plenty of others living here, I haven't seen much of anything to make life better here. In fact, it's been the worst year of the past 8 years living here... and 8 years ago the world economy was thriving so don't try crediting that to Mr. T... he had very little, if anything, to do with the healthy economic boom of the early 2000's in Thailand.

For a guy (read "Thaksin"), who claims to know how to solve all the problems of Thailand, as far as anyone can tell things are still pretty much in the gutter. So much for your angel from heaven here to save the poor and shower the "good life" on all who reside here. When I asked a Thai friend of mine what happened to Thaksin's promise stating that he would eradicate poverty and that there will be "no more poor in 6 months!" he said, "Yeah... there will be no more poor. They'll all be dead!" HAh! Even his dedicated faithful are starting to see through his "Emperor's New Clothes" crock o' crap!

Right... and how much pissing and moaning did the Red Tshirts make after only a year of the Democrats being in office? So now it's not acceptable to judge Thaksin by the Red Tshirts own established standards & practices?

i'm neither singing her praises nor am i criticising everything she does, that's why i asked the question.

I haven't seen much of anything to make life better here. In fact, it's been the worst year of the past 8 years living here

and do you blame that on the policies of the yingluck government, what negative impact has the ptp policies had on your personal life? please answer me that.

because if you're blaming this worst year (of your life here) not on the changes made to the country by yingluck's government, then what are you basing it on? the general political turmoil?

are you blaming all that on yingluck's government?

So much for your angel from heaven here to save the poor and shower the "good life" on all who reside here.

see this is what i mean... it's the same old rubbish that i hear from numerous posters here... if you're not a staunch anti-ptp/yingluck/thaksin/red shirt hater then that must mean you worship them like gods.

it's just ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous... i mean how can i have a reasonable debate with people who've already made their minds up in that fashion.

it's either - or, with ye

and it's just tiresome.
