Blessing rites ahead of HM's birthday

Pakamas Jaichalardn,

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Monks across the country are holding blessing ceremonies for Her Majesty the Queen, who marks her 80th birthday tomorrow.

"She is an exemplary Buddhist," Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamangkalajarn said yesterday in his capacity as member of the Supreme Sangha Council. The senior monk, who is also the abbot of Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen, was one of the monks presiding over a blessing rite for Her Majesty yesterday. Several senior monks, including the abbot of Wat Saket, attended the rite, which was conducted in line with the Lanna tradition.

Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamangkalajarn said that though Her Majesty was considered the mother of the nation and had the highest status among women, she was very humble.

"She has made huge contributions to Buddhism. She set up a fund to help ailing monks at Siriraj Hospital and also makes monthly donations to the Monk's Hospital," he said, adding that Her Majesty also gave alms every Monday and Friday at the Dusit Palace.

The senior monk said a praying ritual for Her Majesty would be held at the Emerald Buddha Temple today, while similar rites will be held across the country on Monday.

Wat Saket's assistant abbot Phra Wijitthammaporn said a new song, "Mae Ja", composed in honour of the Queen, could be downloaded at www.jariyatam.com.

Meanwhile, Culture Ministry permanent secretary Somchai Sianglai said the National Culture Commission had honoured Her Majesty with the title "Akarapiraksa Sinlapin" (Great Artist who Conserves the Arts), adding that another song was composed in her honour by national artists including Naowarat Pongpaiboon and Chalee Intarawijit. This song can be downloaded on www.m-culture.go.th.

PM Yingluck visited the newly-built dyke at Navanakorn Industrial Promotion Zone

PATHUM THANI, 11 August 2012 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has taken part in the system test of the 1.2-billion-baht, newly-built dyke at the Navanakorn Industrial Promotion Zone.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra traveled to the Navanakorn Industrial Promotion Zone on Friday to witness the system test of the 20.6-kilometer dyke, which cost 1.2 billion baht to build.

Parts of the 5.5 meter-tall dike have been operational since early this month while the entire project is scheduled to complete by the end of September.

Friday’s test, which involved 2 boats to create the maximum force of 37 pounds per square inch from water mass towards the dyke, proved that the new structure could work efficiently.

After the test, the PM thanked Navanakorn’s executives, locals and all agencies involved in the construction.

PM Yingluck also assured that the government has planned a series of flood prevention measures to avoid the repeat of last year’s crisis, from upstream to downstream areas.

She stated that permanent and semi-permanent check dams have been constructed in the upstream, while there has been satisfactory progress in the dredging of canals and the preparation of the water retention area in the midstream.

For the downstream area, the government has elevated all related roads and set up a communication and warning networks for all industrial estates.

Nevertheless, the Premier is confident that the new dyke is a good start to boost confidence among local and foreign investors, while confirming that the government will collaborate with all sides to protect key economic and industrial zones.

MRTA expects underground rail service fare cut to lead to considerable service expansion

BANGKOK, 11 August 2012 (NNT) – The country’s urban train operator expects Bangkok’s underground rail system to soon expand considerably after its fare is lowered.

Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) Governor Yongsit Rojsrikul said on Friday that MRTA has been negotiating with Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL), the operator of the underground train system, to lower its fee to a flat rate of 20 baht. The negotiation is expected to be concluded by September.

Mr. Yongsit said that, if the rate is lowered, the number of passengers will go up and lead BMCL to order around 19 more cars to expand its service.

He expects all of this to be completed by the end of 2013.

Concerning the Purple Line “Bang Yai-Bang Sue” electric rail system, Mr. Yongsit said that the construction will likely be ready for the Cabinet to review in September, after MRTA has completed initial discussions with BMCL.

Surin province looks into waterway obstruction

SURIN, 11 August 2012 (NNT) – Surin Province has set up a committee to urgently deal with the problem of Siam Global House Company building a structure encroaching on a public waterway.

Governor of Surin, Mr. Nirun Kanlayanamit, told a press conference that the move is taken after he found that authorities supervising the area took no action to stop the construction. Mr. Nirun said he had issued a written order to the chief of the Tambon Chaniang Administrative Organization asking him to inform the project owner to stop the construction. However, the officer, whose term is due to expire on August 23, seemed to have some difficulties in carrying out the order.

Siam Global House Public Company Ltd. is constructing a building of a size that is larger than legal permission in an area along the Surin-Prasat road, encroaching upon the path of the Huai Saneng stream. The construction is in violation of the law and regulations covering city planning in the province.

The Governor said the province has set up a committee to quickly solve the problem before local residents are adversely affected as the building could clog the waterway resulting in repeated floods in the future.

The press conference was also attended by Deputy Governor of Surin, Mr. Yuthana Viriyakitti, and officials from relevant agencies in the province.

DDC cautions against inhaling incense smoke

SURIN, 11 August 2012 (NNT) – Ms. Kanyarat Kiatsupha, who handles public relations for the province of Surin, received information from the Department of Disease Control (DDC) regarding precautions to be taken during Buddhist holidays.

According to the DDC, many Buddhists engage in religious rites during Buddhist holidays, and as such, the department cautions those who suffer from respiratory diseases, such as asthma, to avoid inhaling large amounts of smoke from joss sticks and other forms of incense. Inhalation of incense smoke may trigger symptoms. Breathing in incense smoke also leads to increased risk of cancer, as the aromatic substance contains three carcinogens: benzene, butadiene, and benzo(a)pyrene. These are released from the burning of glue and scented substances.

The lighting of one joss stick releases 325 grams of carbon dioxide and 7 grams of methane, which is equivalent to the release of 23 times the amount of carbon dioxide. These can all contribute to the formation of cancers such as leukemia, lung cancer, stomach cancer, etc. To reduce the amount of smoke released from a joss stick, the lit joss stick should first be dipped in water or sand before being set out.
