I'M Thinking About Buying A Gun For Home Security

Recommended Posts

I like the post about "layered security" fence - proximity lights - dogs - gun.

By the time any intruder gets through the first three I asume it's enough time to prepare the final security.

I like guns. But, in your case I would not have one.

The advice above is good minus the gun. Build a safe room. Something your family can get to if everything else fails. Something secure, and hidden, with the ability to sound an alarm and call for help. Something you could stay in for several hours even if it were found.

Failing having a safe room, just have a decent lock on your bedroom door and keeping in your bedroom your mobile phone and your car keys with the remote would help. Usually the range on car remote is pretty good and even from your bedroom, if you hit the panic button it will probably work and help wake the neighbours. And with the phone of course you can call local police/friends/relatives.

Very good point. You could outfit your bedroom with a steel door, and bolt lock. You can have one custom built (I have one on my back door) like mine for a few thousand Baht. A solid steel one for around 10K which is cheap safety.

This is a good idea for the bedroom!

Our house is 2 levels (not complete yet) but could easily make upstairs secure.

One problem is we all sit downstairs at night with doors and windows open to allow the cool breeze to flow through the house.

I would guess that most of these home invasions are committed in the dead of night.

Great, another layer found :)

If you're set on getting a gun, go for a 410 gauge shotgun. Low recoil, so it is easier to control, and it does have enough manstopping power to drop someone. Use shot not slugs, more chance of hitting that way. Another bonus of this lower gauge shotgun is that the shot will no, usually, penetrate walls and hit an unintended target.

I have lived in Central America for years if the people around you know you have like two dogs Big black ones are the best train the dogs not to take food from others train them well,if people come over put them up,so they know who belongs on your property and you will have know problem.I had a sign saying my gate is never lock please come in my dogs like to eat people never had anybody come in. It worked for me

Shot gun, and get plenty of time in at the range with your wife. Know how to safely and effectively use it. And be ready to if you get one. No sense having it only to have it taken away from you because you couldn't act desively when you had too.

This is really bad advice from someone who knows nothing about guns and what they do.

I really can support the safe room!Make sure it is strong enough to keep some one out for about 30 minutes or so,your telephone is your second best friend.Keep a few small dogs outside, you will soon learn the way they bark at strangers at night.

Most important make sure if you do use it everyone is in the saferoom so nobody can be held hostage.

Install a big flashing alarmlight on a wall that can be seen from the road so police can see where to go.

Do not believe dogs can be trained to not accept food from a stranger, just use a few small dogs that bark when something is off normal and you will be ok.

The big drawback of owing a gun is being shot with it when you come home and supprize a burglar.

I also know of a guy who got shot at by his wife (on purpose)

I'd just move. If I lived somewhere and felt the need to arm myself or keep attack dogs I'd feel like I'd already lost.

You and me both. Not only that I would prefer not to live near people who believe they need to keep attack dogs or personal arms dumps.

Another point to remember is that the more ostentatious you or your wife are inclined to be, the bigger the target you are putting on your backs. Definitely a keeping up with the Jones mentality here (as of course in other places), and a desperate need to have the biggest house with the biggest gates, the largest TVs, the newest most expensive cars, the latest smart phone etc, and that's all well and good (who doesn't like the nice things in life?), but when you are living not in the Beverley Hills, but in an area where a short stone's throw from your property perimeter, people are living in huts and shacks and up to their necks in debt, you need to think about the balance between living in luxury and living in safety.

Me and the wife bought a few rai on the River Kwai

You mean you pay for it and it is in your Wife's name on the papers cheesy.gifclap2.gif

Yes! Buy a gun because you will need it when the Misses try to kick you out !!!!! tongue.png

My wife put these screens and bar combination on the house that she got the 100% loan for at the bank.

Not everybody deserves to be laughed at. My wife got the loan and we both make the payments. Since she will live 40 years longer than I that makes sense to me. I guess some people could laugh at that.

I guess I should repeat that. Wife got 100% loan in her name. That is no money down! Get it? New construction.

Sure it is in her name. After I am gone I want her to have it no problem. Why wouldn't I?

The screens are in the bars so you can leave everything open and still be protected.

I was considering the screens, but the local Thai handyman in my village said don't bother. He said with a small set of boltcutters the screens present no problem. He said go for an alarm system, works out about the same cost wise.

I thought about that. Not all bars are alike. If I remember right she paid 30,000 baht. It is quite a process to cut them. Alarm of course is good and most give you five numbers to be dialed. I just wondered if the cops would come if called.

Good advice dude, thanks for the photo's!

I also got screens in front of the doors and the house. I am pretty sure that with a good bolt cutter they can be cut open but its still a deterrent. I also got 2 bangkaew dogs, the Thais in general are really scared of those. Again those could also be killed.

But, its a low risk area and my house has better security then the next. So in general they will go for the easy money. I don't wear much gold around the neck. Just a chain that i got when i was 16 from my parents. Its not even Thai gold and worn under my t shirts in general. I don't like to flaunt with wealth, that is for insecure people.

I should have mentioned there are boy bars and girl bars. The boy bars the size of your thumb and look like they belong on a bank and the girl bars the size of your little finger with flowers and swirls and such. I have the boy bars and a dog. I used to have a couple of guns here. Actually I could have wiped out a small village with my firepower but the Army would not let me keep them after the war was over.

Over the years back home I had 3 German shepherd dogs. Never a problem with burglaries as everyone knew I had the dogs. Plenty of barking when people came to the house and plenty of scared callers too. I'd make callers wait until the dog was put into the kitchen before letting them in to add to the idea that it would be safer.

As said above, propaganda works. Fear is the key too and much better than a gun. Add to that that if your wife and your son are good with the dog the dog is liable to be very protective of them.

unless the dog gets angry and attacks the kid...

Residential square metre prices

Hong Kong $20,371.

Thailand $2,996.

http://www.globalpro...re-meter-prices

I think I will take Thailand and let the ones requiring an Asian Nanny state go to Singapore or Hong Kong for safety.

Quality of Life scale.

Hong Kong - 18th

Thailand - 42nd.

http://www.economist.com/media/pdf/QUALITY_OF_LIFE.pdf

From 2007 - before the last 5 years of continued rot of Thailand.

I'll take Hong Kong, and leave those who can not work out that Hong Kong's residential space is vertical and most of Thailand is horizontal to settle for a 50% drop in quality of life. Which is pretty accurate actually.

Was this BP or AP?

Why exactly are you posting this on this thread? What in gawds name has price per square mtr of land got to do with the horrendous crime rates and appalling judicial system in Thailand?

Crime rates

Thailand - 20th (Murder rate, 4.8)

Hong Kong - 51st (Murder rate, 0.2).

http://en.wikipedia....l_homicide_rate

You get what you pay for. HK $20,000 same thing in Thailand $2,000. My gosh the Brits trained the HK police! Who trained the Thais?

Well you are wrong actually. Guess you have not spent much time there.

Cost of Mercedes SLS AMG in Thailand; 25m Baht. In Hong Kong 3.4m HKD (13m Baht).

That's half price I believe.

Cost of anything imported in Hong Kong - 1/2 price of Thailand.

Cost of dealing with Hong Kong Police? ZERO. Thai police? Sky's the limit.
