Popular Post Jingthing
Wow. Thanksin now rank among Nelson Mandela, Ang San Suu Kyi and Mahatma Gandhi. OzMick
"Now I know what a statesman is; he's a dead politician. We need more statesmen." Bob Edwards In Thailand's case, the need is dire.
khunken
I'm afraid that he is an example of foot-in-mouth disease. He makes a good statement about the lack of reasoning among Thais. Then he proceeds to demonstrate it
Ricardo
Wow. Thanksin now rank among Nelson Mandela, Ang San Suu Kyi and Mahatma Gandhi. In his own mind, and often those of his supporters, I suspect. He is also fortunate enough to count Tony Blair & George Bush amongst his "best friends", and is an "eternal friend" of Hun Sen, I've heard. More like those on mental wards who THINK they are Nelson Mandela, Ang San Suu Kyi, Mahatma Gandhi, Jesus, and the Queen of England, etc. for example, Jatuporn, the Gandhi-loving non-violent promoter, has been charged with crimes for the Riot of July 2007, the ASEAN Summit 2009, and for May Mayhem 2010. ramrod711
I have no idea whether he would become a statesman in the eyes of Thai people, I gave up trying to figure it out. In my eyes, if you are a prisoner because of your politics, your belief in democracy and your refusal to compromise your beliefs, you may be a statesman. If you are in jail because you use your position and insider knowledge for personal gain, you are a criminal and should be viewed as such.
ratcatcher
I am a guess in Thland, having a retirement visa. My question is when will they bring charges of treason and insurrection for the damage and deaths caused by his red shirts with his support and bidding ??? Jerry "I am a guess in Thland, having a retirement visa" Welcome to Thai Visa forum. If you have a visa and live year round in Thailand you are an alien resident, albeit with zero political rights. In answer to your question, IMHO, as long as his family rules Thailand, probably never, but until he actually sets foot back here, we will never know what the justice system will do. AFAIAC he can remain a citizen of the world for as long as he lives.
Arkady
I think this guy should do some soul searching before comparing Thaksin to Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi. Anyway he knows it will never happen and it is probably part of his covert responsibilities to ensure that it doesn't. He carries around some rather unpleasant political baggage in the form of Suchart Tancharoen and the late Samak Sundaravej who was his mentor and got him into politics. Both thoroughly dishonest and reprehensible characters and it is unlikely that he would be much different.

jerrysteve
Going to Jail would make Thaksin A JAIL BIRD. The problem is the people of this could lack the backbone to put him there.
jerrysteve
Judging from the reaction of Thais living in the U.S.A. he was hardly received as a statesmen. He was received as a Thug, and a Criminal. They had the opportunity to ask the U.S. to extradite him, and they chose not to.
jerrysteve
If this is how this New Senate Speaker feels about the Heir Thaksin, then the New Speaker should volunteer to serve the prison sentence of Heir Thaksin. This way the Senate Speaker can become a Martyr..and enter the Halls of Martyrdom while he rots in Jail.
jerrysteve
Samson used the Jawbone of an ASS to slay the enemy, and it looks like the New Senate Speaker is using the very same weapon; except in this case, he is the complete ASS, (not to upset the monitors here, we are defining an ASS as a hardy and sure-footed animal smaller and with longer ears than a horse). Looking closely at the picture of the New Senate Speaker, there kind of a resememblance. Edited August 20, 2012 by jerrysteve

BirdsandBooze
Another HiSo politician with a slender grip on reality. The statesmen and stateswoman he mentions in the same breath as Thaksin weren't sent to prison for lining their pockets.
Popular Post maidu
It is also very encouraging to hear a senior Thai statesman recognizing that there can be no future for his country until his fellow countrymen start finding some logic and reason in everything they do! Read between the lines, and you'll see that 'logic and reason' is as HE defines it. Similar to the Ayotollas of Iran: "think as I do or you're doomed" sort of mindset. It is often forgotten that during the Thaksin years practically everyone was doing well economically..... Yes, Thailand was doing alright economically, but not because of Thaksin. The economic wheels had been set in motion by his Democratic predecessors. Thaksin was just lucky to have come in on that wave or prior fiscal responsibility (international loans had been paid, tourism was good, etc). The biggest hits to tourism, in the past 10 years, came about because of Thaksin. The Yellows commandeering the two airports (protests against T), and riots in Bkk in 2009 and 2010 (both directly and indirectly linked to Thaksin). In sum, the #1 person who can be blamed for Thailand's downturn in fortunes is Mr. T. As if that weren't enough, he's the most responsible for the Yingluck administration's economic policies, and they're looking increasingly like failures.
