My MIL (late 60's) called my wife a couple of days ago and asked her if she could contact her older sister (who is living in the UK) via Facebook and we had to tell that we don't use it, which surprised the MIL. But in the end we got in contact with her via the old SMS way. whistling.gif

Nope and don't use FaceBook now.

I wouldn't either. Have been trying to unsubscribe for some months ,to no avail. Any useful advice on how to, appreciated.

Try deleting as much as you can on the page and then never use it again and pray for the best.

I don't use Facebook, or Twitter or anything like that at all. I have no need to post about my daily routine and chat about the type of coffee I just bought. Most of all, I detest giving out my personal infomation, likes, dislikes to a company that is just turning that around and marketing it. All fluff. ZUckerburgular basically hijacked Facebook. I don' t have much sympathy for the thousands of i nvestors that bought the IPO either. Silly nits. No idea of the value of the company, or its earnings.

I do not use it now, as it is free so why should I pay good money for it ???

There are too many sites on the internet that take your info and use it to make a profit or worse.

If they want to use my info, then give me a cut of the action, otherwise screw them.

Facebook is just the latest in a long line of social media/networking websites. It caught the wave of popularity, heaven knows why, and now has hundreds of millions of users. Facebook will go the way of the Dodo bird, just like all the rest. Their business model for advertising has recently taken a huge hit with markdowns due to reduced advertising space on mobile platforms and they are also losing big-ticket advertisers. Their stock is in the toilet and their costs are spiraling with every Tom, Dick and Pornchit posting everything thing do online, with photos. There has been zero successful social media sites that charge for access or features. Mark Zucherberg should dump his shares now with they are still worth something.

Yes you can get rid of Facebook ... I managed it ... just google and you will find the answer. BUT after deleting you must not try and log on again for about a month ... also don't click any links to Facebook or you will be subscribed again.

If you really can't do it I'll look up how to. OK it took me a while but in the end i had success ... never again will I subscribe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually after a period you gat an e-mail saying account closed.

I just looked (googled)... now there is a form that you can fill out to delete your account ... it might also work!

This question has another aspect which is "how would you pay that $1".

If a guy showed up at your door each month collect $1 and you grabbed up some coins off the counter and paid it...most people would probably be fine, but it doesn't work this way.

You'd need a valid credit card, and then your card gets randomly rejected because your IP doesn't match the address...your got to get on the phone with your bank, got to get another card? Got to remember to go and pay at counter service...? At which point it's not just "a dollar" it's a hassle.

I think most of the 500 million daily users (and some of the 300 million sporadic users) would find a way if it was that or lose access to their account (especially if their "friends" would see that their account is locked).

Once everyone (or nearly everyone) has an account, Facebook will have many opportunities for growing revenue (by increasing prices or selling access to extra services).

Sent from iPhone; please forgive any typos or violations of forum rules

I think the voting has got quite a bit to do with the demographic. For many of the posters, who did not grow up using computers, TV is as complicated as they are prepared to go. Also there is the satisfaction of instant replies to bitching and complaining anonymously which you just can't get on Facebook. You would also have to "friend" your worst internet (forum) enemy to get your message across. laugh.png

I guess this question is not really about FaceBook.

But FWIW I guess if FB decide to charge every man and his dog will move to Google + or another alternative.

Similarly if TV try to charge then a different Thai based forum will take up the slack or a new one will emerge , there are enough online investors in Thailand at the minute that many of the current players must be seriously thinking of selling up/out.

When you look at what Rocket have done with FoodPanda you can imagine a few squeaky bums at Food by Fone and Chefs XP.

Edit

Looking at the current results 85% +/- of users would move somewhere else.

I love the outrage over FB mining data when most of you don't know the reality!

Your ISP is likely selling your data anyway. And purchasers are linking it to credit bureaus to build full and complete user profiles. Very dominant practice in Europe and US.

Billing info, clickstream data, searches, refined searches, organic v paid preference etc are compiled and sold by your friendly service provider.

I strongly disagree.

You only need to look at the stats on this poll to see how far from accurate your assumption is, and this poll does not yet take into consideration the number of people in that 9.86% who are willing to pay, but not actually able (credit card rejected etc..)

There are a great number of ways Facebook can (and is) monetizing their site...directly charging the end users will never be one of them.

FB is a marketing machine plain and simple.

For us and our businesses it works fantastically , targeted to the exact demographic we require.

Yes I would pay a dollar a day, in fact we spend a lot more already using FB and other Social media to promote our brands and products.

Those on here stating never used it, deleted, utter nonsense etc etc have no real idea of what Social networking is really about.

There are lots of companies invading your Privacy online, FB is just one of them. The only way to avoid it is to burn your computer, go pay as you go on your phone and never plug an electrical networked appliance in again in your lifetime.

The demographic of the membership of this site is not representative of the 500 million FB users who are active on it everyday. By definition, FB is a big part of these people's lives and they would not forfeit that for the sake of 1 baht per day (especially as their FB "friends" would see this).

I am sure 99.9% of those users find a way to pay for their mobile phone, and would find a way to pay to keep their FB account live. Given the size of FB they could sell credit via top-up cards (same as mobile phone network providers) in virtually every grocery store in the world.

Crafty they are, especially since I'm using a VPN to Singapore all the time, with Ghostery and AdBlock installed on the browser. I guess they really, really consider the fact that I ain't buying anything from any unsolicited ads important to their business. And here of course one uses cash, not plastic.

The only thing I use that tracks is Android, but it's connected to an email I otherwise never use.

I have grown up with computers.. i have build them installed them ect. I use them a lot as you can see at my post count but i never wanted facebook. The gf is crazy about it and so are most of her friends. Im not sure if they would pay, or could pay.

Might be good setting up a service for Thais or others without a creditcard paying for them and getting a percentage.

We currently only have the poll presented here as evidence of what users are and are not willing to do (which refutes your claims). Or do you have an alternate poll which you feel more accurately represents what the average facebook user is willing to do?

I have never seen any other polls on this subject but anyway I think it is easy for people to say "no" to an anonymous internet forum, but in reality if those 500 million most avid users (who check their FB everyday) tried to log in to find out what their friends are talking about today and found they could not access their account unless they pay 1 dollar, few would be able to resist. For many of these people, FB is not just a part of their life, it is their life.
