Hey Folks, I think Mrs Ranger might be pregnant, we recently moved from Bangkok and have no idea about hospitals in the Jomtien / Pattaya area. Does anyone have first hand experience or recommendations of where to go? We have insurance etc. and money isn't a problem, I just want somewhere competent and safe. Thanks in advance.

In your area the viable options are:

Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital

provincial hospital in Chonburi

Bangkok Pattya Hospital

Phyathai Sri Racha

Samitivej Sri Racha

All of them will be competent and safe. The first 2 are government hospitals and will entail a lot of red tape, you will nto have the option of being in the delivery room at the birth, and you will face language barriers at least with the nursing staff.

The last 3 are all private; BPH probably the most expensive of the 3, but as you are insured this may not matter. I suggets you base the choice on the indiovidual obstetrician: make appointments with several, limiting yourslef to thode who speak fluent English, and then select the one both you and your wife are most comfortable with. Consider in advance (and discuss with your wife) whether you weant to be present in the delivery room because if so, that will limit you to doctors willing to accomodate this (some will, some won't; it is not so common a practice in Thailand, but in a private hospital it can be done if the doctor agrees).

Thank you very much for that info, language barriers aren't a problem for me but red tape certainly is so thanks for that heads up. I will be checking thos places out as soon as I get home. Thanks again

One other point I failed to mention is that private hospitals tend to do elective caesean sections, i.e. c-sections that are not medically required. Many Thai women prefer this and in Thailand it is something of a status symbol, but it is something you and your wife should discuss in advance. If she wants a c-s then no problem, if she does not want one unless necessary then this needs to be factored into your choice of obstetrician and made clear from the onset.

Thanks for that, I am pretty sure she would like that idea anyway as we have had a cousin and a friend recently who went through some pretty horrendous natural births. Thanks again for helping me out here, I appreciate it.
