My Biggest Mistake In Thailand.......

Featured Replies

My first trip to Bangkok was a catalogue of errors... some too embarrassing to post about.

I can't think of anything big enough to mention. I must have woken up an optimist today.

My biggest mistake was in not going there 20 years earlier...

Listening to the advice of a Thai Lawyer who stated catergoricaly that I could buy a house in my own name!

I thought you could buy the house but not the land.

Yes! on a 30 year lease, which is not the same as ownership,Or in your Company name, which is still not the same as your ownership. And you are correct you can't buy the land.

Not correct but they have you thinking that

Go to BOI several programs where you can buy. Some developers only build for expat buyers

1 way is transfer over 30m baht. can buy up to 2 rai land and home

No (major) mistakes; no regrets.

First few nights. Overpaid for room by 50%, taxi a took me half a mile and charged 300 baht and a certain someone got paid twice as I forgot I had paid already.

Three days in I had been done over a few times but lost a paltry amount and met some good friends who set me right.

I want to do something constructive with my time here but setting up a business here looks fraught with woes.

Don't worry it's normal.

No it's not.

Yes it is.

Repeat until bored.

Everyone makes mistakes - the important thing is not to make the same mistake twice as you have done. sad.png

Trusting the drug dealing mafia scum that is the Royal Thai Police to properly investigate a burglary at our house.

Over capitalising in a rural area, but I see it as a price to pay for experience. no biggie.

I dont think i have made one yet.

Believing that EVERYTHING is cheaper. I was surprised after I did all my own homework how misguided and misinformed most are. I guess it must be all that CHEAP crap beer that they drink.smile.png

On Edit: You can buy an excellent quality beer in the states for nearly 25% cheaper then you can buy a bottle of Leo

I assume thats a typo.

Excellent quality beer in the States?..................whistling.gif

In my drinking days, arriving in Bkk for my flight home a full 24 hours before I was meant to. Party time in Bkk to the extent that I was late for my (actual) correct checkin and missed the flight. Lucky I was only going to Hong Kong and there were other flights available.

Live and learn; excellent adventure!!

Edit: Typo

Believing that the reason the girls in the go-gos wore numbers was because they all looked the same and it was easier remembering the numbers than their names.................sad.png

in two parts.

1. Being too young and naive when i first came here.

2. being too old and jaded (and married) when I came back the last time.

yes reading this thread....time is money

Give me a few more days, I'm sure I'll mess up something big time soon.

First came to Thailand in 1988 & had the best holiday traveling with a BG. Came back 10 other times expecting the same experience – what's the definition of insanity?

Biggest mistake I made was moving here and taking some time to find my own independence. I was quite dependent in many ways with my boyfriend when I first got here. Now I am my own person and much more independent. I actually feel more secure like this. :)

i remember that. Are you me?

My first night in Pattaya, seeing the big soapy on Soi 2/3 ? and thinking it was actually a beauty pageant laugh.png

Ordering a banana milkshake in such horrendous Thai language that I actually ordered a semen milkshake. I was shooed away until I pointed at a banana in a bowl sitting on the counter.

Imagine the shock of unclasping a bra & having 2 pairs of socks hit the floor! smile.png

That is why i fear ordering pancakes banana in Thai.

My biggest mistake was...no big surprise....falling in love with the wrong girl. So easy to do in Thailand.

Still in recovery .......

When first arriving not knowing the money and tipping the taxi driver 50 satang.

Kicking a football on the beach while wearing sandals and watching said sandal flying into a ladies green curry :(

First night in Bangkok sitting in a Go-Go and getting angry because a girl wanted 400 Baht for sitting and talking to me.

She actually wanted Bar fining to stay with me lol!

Well that's a new one on me,is that a recent devopment? and is the land definately in a Expats name with no strings attached?

I am surprised that didn't cause further confusion.

Thinking that the discussions on Thaivisa were a true representation of life in Thailand.
