As someone who has been an foreigner living in almost 20 countries over the last 40 years, I'd say the OP has got it about right. But bear this in mind - the guys who never set foot outside their own country (more than 50% of USA citizens don't have a passport apparently) can still be miserable at home and complain about police corruption, bad services, poor maintenance, etc, etc. While a guy living in a totally foreign land can be as happy as a sandboy.
