No Rs232 Connector On Computer. Wanting To Flash A Dreambox 518S

Neither my tower system nor the laptop have an RS232 connector. Both have the 15 pin VGA connector. The tower has a DVI_Con1 also.

So is there an RS232 cable that will link to a 15 pin VGA here in Thailand or maybe a connector available to turn the RS232 into a VGA 15 pin? I tried Tukcom but got no joy there. Little on the web about it either.

I'd like to be able to flash the DM518s to be able to use it in the bedroom for FTA programmes off the satellite. Currently I cannot access the web to change the satellite areas because the file has been removed.

Would a local satellite company flash the drive so I can access the satellites in the region?

Alternatively what would be a good and cheap set top box to put in the bedroom mainly for Thai tv (that I will not be watching). The satellite currently points towards Astro at ? 91.5 deg E ?

Thanks

RS232 is a 9 pin connector and not at all compatible with VGA. You can buy USB to RS232 converters for a few hundred baht. Not sure where you are located so can't recommend a place to buy them. I understand from another topic on this it can be flashed through a LAN connector. One model of USB to RS232 is ATEN U232.

//edit - just saw your member name so assume Pattaya, else if in Chiang Mai you could borrow one of mine.

Attention VGA and serial port is something as different as a coconut to an apple.....looks similar, tastes different....

I ordered a usb to RS232 for a different purpose. Amazon has them.

Thanks for the input guys :)

Now I can see why I had a problem at Tukcom and also trying to find the answers on the web.

The USB to RS232 sounds a good idea. I'll go down tomorrow and see what I can get.

I bought the ATEN UC232A locally in Chiang Mai so suspect some shop will have them there. Here is what mine looks like, just a DB9 connector on one end and USB on the other.

That would do nicely. I'll get one 2morrow and have some fun re-setting the DM. It will give me something to do.

Thanks :)

Yeah, they have them in TukCom..

But not sure why you would need it to flash a dreambox unless the current firmware got compromized...

I simply use flashwizard.

I have the software to do it but not the connections - not until 2morrow anyway.

Yes, the folders have been compromised or wiped out. That is my job for tomorrow to pass away a bit of time flashing, setting up and finding the FTA programmes.

Just as an aside, does anybody know how to easily remove all channels from.a particular satellite?

Now i have all those pay channels in there, and would like to get rid of them and then re-scan for fta channels alone...

That is without using a pc, just on the box using the remote...

Flashing a dreambox you do through the lan port, not?

Only if the dreambox is working normally.

If something went wrong during a lan flash, or when the firmwate is corrupted, only through rs 232 port you can get the thing to work again...

simply delete all the non FTA channel transponders is the quickest way as outlined in the openPLI wiki http://openpli.org/wiki/E1SatEdit

And that is why I need to use the RS232 port.

If you have the correct folders in the dreambox then no need to flash.

There are some good videos available in U tube for using, setting up and flashing the dreambox.

Problem. Neither dreamup nor flashwizard will connect to the dreambox using the USB to RS232 cable.

I have installed the driver that came with the new cable.

I have installed the cable USB port to RS232.

I have the dreambox LAN also connected to my router.

The blue light and green power light come on on the dreambox.

The light on the router comes on.

edit ... have set the ip to the correct ip for the dreambox

Any ideas on what I might have missed or not be doing? Is there some configuration of XP that I need to make?

Problem solved.

I must be getting old !! Am old whistling.gif

I pinged the box and got no reply. so I started pinging other ip's until I found one that worked. Oddly enough when booted and into expert setup the dreambox shows an ip of xxx.xxx.x.101 with DHCP enabled. Yet it does not show as the same ip when linked to the computer even using the same LAN connection on the router.

But thanks anyway if anyone was going to reply :)
