I don't go to Tesco Chaweng all that often, maybe once a week, but virtually every time I am there I notice the same foreigner usually sitting in the food court. He's probably in his late forties or early fifties, has graying hair that appears to have been dyed a rusty light brownish color, and is has a medium build. He is generally sitting alone, sometimes with a book and I think occasionally with a laptop. Sometimes I have seen him sitting at Annie's pretzel shop.

The odd thing is that he is there really often and appears to have nothing to do.

Anyone know who this fellow is or why he is in Tesco Chaweng as if the food court was an office job?

I don't make it a habit to walk up to someone who hangs out in a food court like it's his home. It's very odd behavior. But since some of you do know who this is, let's have it. You don't need to give names and addresses, but I'd like to know what gives with "living" in a Tesco food court.

I'm at tesco a lot, and can honestly say I've never noticed him. I'll keep an eye out and say hello of I see him.

He could be lonely, could just like to people watch.

I will say that I find the expats on Samui very reserved compared to other areas of Thailand. I can only guess it has to do with the large flux of tourist.

I heard he won $185M in the US Powerball Lottery and now doesn't know what to do with it. It must be lonely at the top. I said "hello" to him once but he said, "No, I won't lend you any money!" So, I won't be speaking to him again.

Many people on this island don't go to bars or clubs so if they are single where do they go? That pretty much leaves the beach, Tesco, and Big C to hang out. There are a group of at least five guys I see every time I go to Tesco so it is not unusual. If they are reading a book or hacking a laptop does it really matter?

Why not sit in air conditioned comfort reading a book or watching a movie on his laptop with free wifi and most likely hoping a another foreigner doesn't come and bother him or he could be just waiting for you to ask him out for a date.

There is a guy there often and I do know him. But of course I am not sure it is the same fellow the OP is referring to. Anyway, the guy I know has had several small businesses on Samui in the past but I think he doesn't do anything anymore. He is not short of a buck or 2 and has a girlfriend that works at one of the stalls between the food court and Tesco. I guess he likes to be near his gf and sit in aircon comfort, eat a little of this and that, and basically just relax and mind his own business. Nice guy if it the one the OP means.

That's the same guy. His wife does work around Tesco and I see him dropping her off and taking her back home. Don't worry he's harmless. I'm afraid to ask him about his hair though as it might be a rug. For several years there was a homeless Greek guy who bought a bottle of water at 7/11 and sat in the Auntie Annes all day, not just for a couple of hours. He wore the same clothes every day and never bought a pretzel. One day I asked him his story and he said that he couldn't go home because he didn't have a visa or passport. Does anyone remember that guy or what happened to him? See, interesting characters at Tesco! You guys are missing out.

Let's not put words in my mouth, thank you. I never suggested that this fellow should not be there or that he was someone to be scared of. If he wants to sit in Tesco all day, more power to him. I was just curious since I have never seen anyone else make Tesco their primary hang out (particularly on a resort island with all the natural beauty available).

I don't see the difference between sitting there and sitting in a bar, except in a bar there is alcohol which is said to be unhealthy for you in excessive quantities and at a bar you generally socialize, something I rarely see our Tesco gentleman do (and those fizzy drinks are supposed to have tons of sugar in them).

Keeping watch over his woman would make some sense, although in the real world that might be seen differently. If he really does have a few bob, then why not "take care" of the woman and relax on the balcony with the nice sea view? But then I do appreciate having the local lover learn the value of a little hard work. Work is good.

Also, if I wanted to just go up and ask him why I see him virtually every time I am in Tesco Chaweng, I would have done so. But that would not be my style. Call it my English reserve.

I have nothing against anyone who sits around all day; why should I? I was the silver medalist in the men's singles "Sitting Idly, Wasting Time" event at the last Samui Olympics. If there is anyone who knows how to lollygag on Samui contemplating his navel, it's me.

Maybe the guy doesn't like sitting on his own at home. Probably little more in it than that.

Atleast he's not getting pissed every afternoon regailing stories of his ex SAS special ops. biggrin.png

What would be wrong with that?

It seems that he is at Tesco everyday as every time i'm there, he is too

It's possible, although I don't stare at anyone.

All joking apart but why do you care what he's doing? live and let live and carry on with you're own business.

Sorry forgot to add that whats wrong with some drunk regailing their fantasy ex special force stories is that its boring and embarrassing to listen to but thats just my opinion ofcourse. You may find them interesting

Every time I go to Tesco, there is a whole group of people there. Every time, without fail. And they all wear the same green shirts. Does anyone know what that's all about?

Tesco employees ? O lunch break?
